I am new to Ottawa and looking to join a Masters swimming group. I found your name with the Kanata group and was hoping for some more information. What can you tell be about it?
I have a long history of swim training, though it is somewhat intermittant. I would very much like to get involved in a program here.

Hello Masters,
I'm interesting in joining your group, do I just show up at the pool
on one of the swim nights? Is it too late to join the fall season?
Thanks.
--- James
Yes, just pop into the Wave Pool at the start of one of our swims---
9:15 tomorrow night, for example. For a trial swim just sign the club
waiver form (see deck notice board) and give it and $5 to our coach or
one of the club executive---myself (Ruth) or our treasurer (Chris).
It is not too late for the Fall session---the fees would be prorated
since we are well into the session.
Thanks for your interest and have a great swim!
Ruth

Hi,
I am interested in completing a triathlon at some point in the near
future but my swimming no nowhere up to par. Although I have done the
Rideau Lakes tour twice with no major problem and have finished 2
marathons (no record breaking times I must say) I have a very hard
time swimming. It almost seems like I panic and get winded almost
immediately ... I can not go for more than a few yards freestyle.
I am not sure where to start, where to go or how to proceed to improve
on this front. I don't really ahve the funds to spend on a coach so I
am usualy stuck to my own devices for training. I am also fairly
limited on time because of a few kiddies at home.
Feedback or advice would be appreciated. I am in the west-end which
is why I am inquiring in this group.
Thanks for your help!
Joel :)
It really does sound like you need help with your stroke (most likely you are not breathing properly but that can be cause by any number of stroke issues).
You need to find a swim team that can help you and that has a coach. This way you can afford a coach as the entire team pays for the coaching.
I am the President of Nepean Masters Swim Club so I am biased to which team I think is the best. We have a link on our club site that links to all the local clubs.
Take your time, find an affordable club that meets your time schedule and then register and swim a few times a week. You should communicate to the club your skill level and then you can ask if the coach works on strokes.
At our club we have 2 coaches per session (each coach coaches four lanes with one coach focusing on the newer swimmers and one coach focusing on the more experienced swimmers - except our Thursday evening and Saturday morning swims which have only one coach).
Our schedule and fees (our fees would be prorated for the rest of the year as the year runs from September to June) is posted at: http://nmsc.org/visitors/links.php
Good luck. Barry Doucette

Joel,
If you want to drop in for a trial swim, meet our coach and try our
club, it is just $5. We are at the Kanata Wave Pool Tuesday and
Thursday evenings 9:15 and Sunday mornings 8:00.
Reply to my main e-mail if you would like me to send you our club
waiver as an attachment.

Hi,
I would be interested in joining the masters swimming
in kanata. I had a few questions:
What are the criterias to join?
Is there a deadline to enroll for spring session?? Can
I enroll for spring session?
Is there an information package?
Do I have any obligations by joining?
What is the payment methode?
Is there equipment provided by the club?
Thank you in advance
Anik Bastarache
Dear Anik,
CRITERIA: You must be over 18 years old and swim 50m continuously.
DEADLINE: We take on new members at all times, prorating the fees.
INFORMATION: The webpage covers most details.
OBLIGATIONS: Not sure what you mean.
PAYMENT: Cash or cheque.
EQUIPMENT: You need your own goggles. We have hand paddles and we
have the use of the pool's swim fins, etc.
I hope this was helpful. Please do not hesitate to contact me for
more information.
Cheers,
Ruth
