Photos are very important. My Sifu just got a
wonderful photo album for our schools second anniversary. I
also understand the importance of articles, they
further our art and inform people of our presence. I
think you do good work Sigung Bishop as I have seen
some of your articles and I would hope that if anyone
has pictures pre 70's they could help you out. I was
also thinking about an idea of getting copies of those
photos to Sijo to help rebuild his lost collection. I
would even hope that when we get bigger here we could
build a photo album of current Kajukenbo teachers and
students and send that to Sijo as well. Things like this
are what this club is all about! KAJUKENBO FOREVER!!

Some of you may know me from some of the magazine
articles that I have written on Kajukenbo and other
martial arts topics. From time to time I'am asked to
provide Kajukenbo/Kenpo info or pictures for various
martial arts books or magazines. The authors/editors are
mostly interested in Kajukenbo history and photos. Most
of the pictures I have are post 70s. Sijo has helped
me out with some photos, but has lost most of his
early photos to a fire. If anyone can provide me with
"copies" of early kajukenbo photos(1940s,50s,60s) I will
make sure that they receive photo credit if the photo
is used. If there is any payment for the use of the
photo, I will also make sure the provider receives it.

As the year 2000 comes closer the female student
base has grown and grown. Kajukenbo works for women,
men, children, or as Grand Master Emil Bautista put it
to me, "Kajukenbo isn't for just anyone, it is for
everyone.". I believe this to be so. Because Kajukenbo isn't
as big as some other martial arts (but getting
there) it maybe that some schools have more men. Our
school has a great deal of women and it may have more
young girls in the kids classes than boys. The future
is so bright!!! SimoElizabeth is an advanced student
in our school and is as good at Kajukenbo as any man
I have met. Kajukenbo forever!!!!!

I have worked security before, and can say that
if I were to know then, what I know now, I would
have felt a whole lot safer about the situation. I was
also in the military, and the basic fighting that you
are taught in Army basic training does not even
compare to what I was learned in Kajukenbo in that last
nine months.

Hi,
I'm Sifu Steve Larson from Academy of Kung
Fu in Longview, WA. We teach Kajukenbo Tum Pai. I
just promoted my first woman student to Black Belt and
I have several other woman that are pushing through
the ranks. I am very happy that my school has a
strong group of women students. Like we say when we have
a class that is over 50% women, "Women rule, men
drool." ;)
BTW, lets hear from more women.

Sifu

I was just noticing that women are rare in this field. Even on this website the
majority are men. Is that the norm in the other schools out there?

I am a police trainer for control tactics and OC
"pepper" spray; my sifu and sigung are both ex-police
officers. My brother is also a "bouncer" so I have seen and
heard of dozens of situations where just the confidence
from kajukenbo has allowed me and them to safely
neutralize a situation without violence. Of course there
have been times when force was necessary, and at those
times simple and direct tactics have prevailed.

Lets get a discussion going! I was wondering how
many teachers or students are/were in the law
enforcement or security field and how has their Kajukenbo
helped? Post your comments or stories about this subject
and let us know! I am in the security field and
Kajukenbo has helped me control a subject both verbally and
physically. I have had numerous encounters were my Kajukenbo
has been the difference between a real battle and a
calm restraint.

Just a brief note about my rules for this club.
Keep the language at a PG rating. No politics
(Kajukenbo), there are no bad styles in Kajukenbo nor are
there any rights or wrongs. Kajukenbo is for everyone
everywhere! Never belittle anyone's art, we are all children
of Sijo and it is to him we owe the most respect! If
I were a younger man I would attempt to study all
the diverse branchs Kajukenbo has gone, from the
internal to the external, hard or soft, and any hybrid
that has come from the path of Kajukenbo. It all works
and it is all Kajukenbo!!!!

Just wanted to share:

This past weekend
the Kajukenbo Association of America (KAA) held the
1st Annual Professor Charles Gaylord Family Reunion
in Oakland, CA. The event waas kicked off with a
Chief Instructor's meeting on Friday evening. On
Saturday there was an all day Kajukenbo Seminar featuring
Professor's: Charles Gaylord, Max Pallen, Wolf Hilleshiem,
James Juarez and Melcor Chavez. Following this was a
very special dinner, demonstrations and other
entertainment. Professor Gaylord did an impromtu "Fan" form.
Other higher KAA Black Belt in attendance were Jim
Williams, Brian Yoshii, Rich Mainetti, Jordan allen, Jo Jo
Pallen, Tom Theofaopoulos, John Quesada, Deborah and
Frank Lozano, Coleen Gragen, Brian Baxter, Frank
Wohler, Jimmy Willis, Bill Sills, Lynn Case, etc. It was
a great evening of sharing in the Ohana spirit. Out
of State schools also attended from Washington,
Idaho, Texas, New Mexico, Las Vegas, etc. The Black Belt
initiation was pretty cool. How often do you have to go
through 40 plus Black Belts? Kaju! I can't wait for the
2nd Annual.

Respectfully Submitted,
Brian

For all you Sigungs, Sifus, and students, welcome
to OUR site! By OUR I do mean all of us. This is for
everyone to come together. We can benefit from each other
and maybe show our love of Sijo and the art his Black
Belts gave us! Please feel free to add your website to
the links page. We would all love to visit and share
sites!

I sent you all invites so we can make this a
world class site with world class students and Sifu's
alike. All styles are welcome but I mostly want to hear
from Kajukenbo students and teachers from all over the
world! It matters not the branch you come from nor the
country, it only matters that we are all learning
something that has grown from a small group in Hawaii in
the late 40's. We are their legacy and we should all
have access to each other to promote all our arts!
This can also be a place to find others doing
Kajukenbo in an area that you might be moving to. Maybe a
new teacher in a country you didn't know had
Kajukenbo schools! Whatever the reason, welcome and lets be
brothers and sisters in the promotion of our art!!!

best Martial Arts site on the web:-)

Good point Sifu_98674! The Tum Pai branch of
Kajukenbo added Tai Chi into it's style which added the
strength of softness. It has taught me to use softer fluid
motion which is unnatural to my size (6' 10", 350lbs).
If it can work for me then it can help anyone:-)

Tum Pai is one of the 4 recognized branches of
Kajukenbo. It is considered the soft style of Kajukenbo.
With emphasis on smooth circular movements, anyone can
use this art reguardless of size and strength.
