Hey guys,

just to clarify - training will be held once again at the Burleigh College in Loughborough as per last year.

Training will also only be open to those invited personally - do not make plans unless someone is in touch over the next few days.

Thanks,

Dale

First off, the people you need to know -

Nick Sampson (fuzzy_bear36@...) - Team Manager
Dale Walker (dalewalker4@...) - Head Coach

The assistant coaches from 2009 (Mark Penny and Josh Coxon Kelly) will be helping out the team as well, but at this stage of the year they won't be involved (because they'd like some weekends off!)

We are not going to be holding open tryouts - the reason being that unless some unknown superstar comes through the ranks and makes his mark, we planned in 2009 to build for a team for 2010. Players invited to the trainings are:
  • U20s from 2009 (firsts and seconds)
  • U17s from the gold medal winning team at Europeans*
  • Players invited at coaches discretion
*This is still only available to select U17s from that team. The team contained a lot of very young players who are not ready for the U20s. We will be in touch.

The first training will be on the 12/13th December. The training will be from 12:00 till 16:00, accomodation will be provided as per usual. The Sunday will feature a mixed hat tournament with the GB Junior Women as the season is very young!

The trainings will run exactly like last year including costs - each player needs to bring £15 for the session, and provide consent forms if you are under 18. A media release form will be needed as well at this first session. Players without both will be ineligible to play at training.

Any questions, e-mail me. If you are planning on attending the session, please e-mail Nick to confirm your place.

Just a quick email to remind people that the junior women's indoors takes
place on Saturday 5th December at Bishop Heber High School, Chester Road,
Malpas, Cheshire. SY14 8JD. Games will not start before 10am and will be
over by 5pm.

The cost is £30 per team. Cheques need to be made payable to Bishop Heber
High School and posted to Kevin Lowe at 15 Normanston Road, Oxton,
Birkenhead. CH43 5SB.

So far we have had interest from

Ocelots (2 teams - Cheshire)
Arctic (3 or 4 teams - Sutton Coldfield)
Hyzer Chiefs (Edinburgh)
Psychedelic Rhinos (Stourport)
Flux (Leicester)
6ffu (Farnborough)
Evolution (Warwick)

With possibles from Airbadgers (Exeter) and Thundercatch (Gosport). We've
never had more than 6 teams play in this tournament but maybe this year
we'll have more.

Junior women need to be under 19 to qualify. Girls are allowed to pickup for
a team so long as their usual team is not playing. Please email me if your
team is interested in playing and you're not on the list, or if you need to
pickup for a team.

Lookfly have a load of shirts they need to get rid of. They are single
colour shirts and most tend to be small or extra small so would suit year 7s
and 8s. They would be ideal as an away strip for an existing team or a
simple first strip for a new team. Ocelots will certainly be putting in an
order for 15 shirts in a similar way that Airbadgers used to have a set of
shirts owned by the club rather than bought (and customised) by the
individual players. If you are interested, contact Lookfly direct on
allison@.... Here's the email she sent me earlier today...

--

We have a stack of ready-made Lookfly Lite shirts in single colour at the
moment that we are trying to clear. They are mainly XS and S sizes, so would
be perfect for juniors. They are men's size and 1 inch shorter than our
current length (changed to be longer about 3 months ago) but it is a length
that you are probably familiar with. Quantities and sizes are below:

Green - XS 37, S 1, M 3, L 3, XL 15
Grey - XS 17, S 28, XL 8
Burgundy - XS 40, S 33, XL 33
Red - XS 35, M 1, XL 12
Navy - XS 37, S 24, M 1, XL 28
Royal - XS 38, M 1, XL 34
Black - M1, XL 10
Yellow - S 11, L4, XL 4
White - S 33, S 10, XL 21.

Also available is a limited selection of women's cut of the above but we
don't have an inventory of that yet.

We would be happy to see these go for £5.00 per shirt plus customisation
(team prints, numbers and names). Maybe they would make a good alternative
shirt? Are there any other Juniors teams out there that you know of that
could do with a deal right now?

Thanks

On Sunday December 6th, there will be a junior development tournament in
Malpas, Cheshire. Unfortunately the sports hall has now lost its viewing
gallery (lovely new gym, useless for frisbee tournaments) so we will only
have the one large pitch rather than the split hall two pitches that we were
used to. This means having to restrict entry to just 10 teams and we are
focusing on year 9s and below. Older beginners and junior women are welcome
to play but the emphasis of this tournament is to develop younger players.
This is an ideal first tournament for new teams made up mostly of 14 year
olds and younger.

There are no trophies in the development tournament for winning, just
trophies for spirit, most improved team, and various spot prizes. The cost
will be just £30 per team. Priority will go to newer teams and those with
more beginners and younger players.
To secure a place, send a cheque payable to Bishop Heber High School (or
BHHS) and post to Kevin Lowe, 15 Normanston Road, Oxton, Birkenhead. CH43
5SB. Games may start as early as 9am on the Sunday and finish around 5pm.

Please email me if you are interested in entering a team.

Subject: Bids for National Junior Outdoors 2010
kevin_l_lowe
Offline Offline
Send Email Send Email

Now that dates have been announced for the junior indoor tournaments, we are
looking for bids to host the 2010 National Junior Outdoor Championships.
There has been much discussion on the junior forum about preferred dates for
this tournament, and opinion is still divided as to whether this should take
place before or after exam season. GB Junior training session dates have
been pencilled in but we need to have a date for the junior outdoors set
quickly so any clashes can be resolved.

Possible dates for the outdoors (with disadvantages listed) are

April 24/25 (very early in outdoor season and possible GB Junior training)
May 1/2 (Bank holiday weekend and Uni women's outdoors)
May 8/9 (Uni mixed outdoor nationals and getting close to start of exams)
May 15/16 (Mixed nationals, exam leave for years 11-13, start of exams)
June 19/20 (Open Tour 1 and some exams still on)
June 26/27 (Glastonbury festival and possible GB Junior training)
July 3/4 (World club championships in Prague)
July 10/11 (World club championships in Prague)
July 17/18 (Open Tour 3 and some schools broken up)

Weekend clashes are inevitable, but some are preferable to others. Hosting
the tournament during the exam period or outside of term time (including
weekends at the start or end of term or even half term) would drastically
reduce the amount of teams that can enter and so haven't been listed as
options.

Historically we have held this tournament in late June/early July which may
well be the best option again even though it would clash with world clubs in
July, and some of the best juniors in the country may be playing for the
likes of Chevron, Brighton, etc. in the Open, Women's or Mixed divisions. If
you are putting in a bid, please state which dates are possible as greater
flexibility often helps when the forum decides who to award the tournament
to. Please note that any changes to a bid once it has been selected must
have approval from the junior committee and could result in the bidding
process being re-opened.

For guidance on running a tournament, please refer to the UKUA policy
http://www.ukultimate.com/files/How_to_run_a_UKUA_tour_5.pdf Don't feel you
have to provide everything, but the closer we get to these high standards,
the better.

We're preferably looking for a bid that can at least accommodate:
- 5+ pitches for two days
- Medical staff
- Cheap/free, safe accommodation / Camping on site
- Affordable entry fee

A central location is preferable, but most teams will travel to almost
anywhere in the country for a 2 day junior tournament. Any extras such as
venue for party, bouncy castles, swimming, etc. must be fully risk assessed.
Remember that the majority of participants will be under 18, and
teachers/coaches/responsible adults (who may themselves only be 18) are
putting their careers and reputations on the line when taking a junior team
to a tournament.

If you would like to submit a bid, then please send an 'email of interest'
with a brief outline ASAP to me at kev_lowe@..., and then a full bid
by December 1st. All bids (including emails of interest) will be published
when received on the public area at
http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=juniors

The bids will then be considered that week and decisions announced by
December 5th. Deadlines will be enforced properly this year, and compromise
bids will not be sought if correctly submitted bids fully meet the bid
criteria. The three most important factors when deciding which junior indoor
bid to accept were the dates, location and cost.

Kevin (on behalf of the junior bids committee)

Following the announcement of the National Junior Indoor championships 2010,
I realise I have left this very late to invite bids to host the National
Junior Women's Indoors 2009. I did ask all teams that have previously
entered this tournament if they would be interested in hosting this but it
is very difficult to find a hall for one day to accommodate such a small
tournament (it's been just 6 teams every year for the last 3 years) and keep
the costs to a minimum. Hopefully this year we may get more than 6, but I
suspect it will still end up being just 6-8 teams.

So, if anyone is interested in hosting this event, then please get in touch
with me as soon as possible. I can host it on Saturday December 5th in
Malpas at £30 a team, but I am more than happy for someone else to host this
tournament. I suspect it will have to be the same date, even though that
clashes with Uni women's indoors, as there are so few weekends remaining
before Christmas.

Also, if anyone is interested in entering a team, please email me. So far we
are expecting Arctic (3 teams), Ocelots (3 teams) and Rhinos (1 team) with
possibilities from Catch Those, Thundercatch and Airbadgers. It would be
great to have more teams though!

Dear Reader!

Liverpool is hosting a Beginners and a Competitive tournament side by
side on the weekend of the 24th and 25th of October.

We decided to do this because we have been given extra hall space and
time slot, we have also had a lot of interest from non-beginner teams
prior to this. Information about both is below.

Both events are being held side-by-side in the fantastic facilities of
the Greenbank Sports Academy. This sports complex has hosted
tournaments in the past such as UKU Junior Nationals and is host to
high level events such as GB Handball Matches and National Wheelchair
Basketball events.

** Beginners Event! **
The beginner’s event has a number of university, colleges and club
teams entered already, but due to a couple of late drop outs there is
stilla few spaces!

Price: £110
Accommodation: Free, with Liverpool based players

** Competitive Event! **
With four of the top University teams in the north already saying a
big yes! And three club teams also giving this a yes! Plus a number of
emails of interest! We have decided that this was a good idea and we
would like to formally invite teams to register.

Price: £90
Accommodation: Free, with Liverpool based players
plenty of hostels, travel lodges, etc in and around the city if floor
space is not your thing.

All I can really say is well done! I coach a bit of Ultimate at my school near Oxford and the kids love it. Unfortunately junior teams are very few and far between, but last term we had a good mini tournament with two other schools, one from Maidenhead and one from Leamington. Hopefully you will find some more in London. I have to teach on Saturdays which unfortunately rules out going to Junior Nationals etc

1. Not 100% sure. You will definitely need to get yourself CRB checked if not already. I would speak to someone at UKUltimate about what their insurance does/does not cover (I believe it comes as part of your membership). They should have plenty of advice on what else you might need. However, if it is run as part of a school activity, as long as you have a risk assessment done then the school should have you covered.

2. I have thought about taking some of my boys to local pickup games in Oxford, particularly the older ones, but not got around to it yet. In one sense it is a great way to get the kids 'locked in' and continue playing after school. However it will need a certain level of understanding from the players involved that their behaviour might have to be adjusted slightly. I think it just needs to be talked through in advance with those involved (you could always take a group to just the first half of a session, allowing everyone to 'relax' later). Having said that, my boys have played against adult teams in a match basis, and as the game is non-contact, this is generally OK.

3. Don't know.

4. Have fun! They will feed off your enjoyment of the sport. Playing with them tends to be the most effective way of passing on knowledge - I usually swap team each point. It is also the easiest way to show them what 'Spirit' actually is like in a real game. Generally they will always want to play games rather than do any drills, but it is always good to start off with a couple of new things for them to think about. And don't worry if some of them don't keep playing or are a bit unreliable. Remember when you were 15?!

If you get it going do get in touch next year and hopefully we can organise a game. Best of luck, and well done again - this is the most important thing that needs to happen in UK Ultimate.

Hi,

Well I've finally gone and done it and now I'm not sure I'm ready for the aftermath.

At the school that I work out we had a cross-curricular week and I taught students some ultimate. Now I have 30 overly keen 15 year old begging me to start a team. I buckled to the pressure and said "yes".

I now I feel a bit out my depth because I have some major concerns. I decided that I needed some advice and hence joined this group.

Here are my concerns:
1. Insurance at tournaments - how covered are we really? Do tournaments have good enough cover or do I need to get some school based stuff or even personal?
2. Generally set up of tournaments for minors - am i overly worried by the idea of students mixing with teams at tournaments where players smoke pot on the sideline etc? - don't get me wrong I teach at an inner city school they aren't naive...i just want to know peoples views.
3. Active Junior teams in London - are there many?
4. Any other stress saving advice?

Any advice / comments are welcome.

Cheers

Lewis

PS is it worth seeing if Si Hill would cater for a mini junior tournament at xeucf? or just a drop in training session and games maybe?

Thanks for all your replies.

I'll just reply to a few points, some of these are to emails that were sent straight to me so may seem a little out of context.

1. Any documents, consent forms etc would be appreciated. I'm an ICT teacher and have no problems with 'borrowing' electronic copies off people. Thanks Kev

2. My school doesn't have a sixth form so I am solely talking about 16 and below. This is why I'm more pensive about legal issues.

3. I work at St Paul's Academy www.stpaulsacademy.org.uk the school is a sports specialist academy but with no fields, a one badminton court gym and two concrete playgrounds. Fortunately we are moving to a new building with a 3G astro with floodlights and a good hall in Jan.

4. I was going to start with just years 9, 10, 11. My school is a mixed school but currently quite small we are growing in size. Our intake is about 30 percent girls. What do others do about girls playing early on. My feelings are:
1. I have no female member of staff.
2. If we made it mixed very few girls would turn up and those that do are likely to overwhelmed by the boys.
3. I should just do older boys first get them understanding the game and start girls later then mix them at a later time.
Any suggestions?
4. My school already have a gaelic football team including a girls one. So hopefully another minority sport is going to be supported not frowned on.

Cheers

Lewis

Welcome back to junior ultimate Loopy! It's been a few years since you
coached GB juniors in 2000 and ironically, GB Juniors are going back to
Heilbronn, Germany in 2010 for Junior Worlds, only this time we'll be taking
GB Juniors Open, Junior Women, U17s Open and U17s Girls.

Insurance - all junior tournaments are UKU sanctioned, therefore covered by
our insurance. By that I mean public liability insurance if something should
go wrong. Medical insurance only applies to juniors that have full UKU
membership (£18.50 for those under 18, £27 for over 18s). Any junior playing
for a GB Junior squad must be a member, others are being encouraged to join.
Next year we will also be introducing school affiliation for newer teams but
we are hoping that most juniors competing in a national junior event like
Indoor nationals, U17 indoor, national junior outdoors and junior women
indoors will be members of the UKU, even if it is only the nominal £5
membership.

Schools tend to have their own insurance for PE away fixtures. It's worth
checking out what your school has. I know mine is different if I can day
trip it (which they class as a PE away fixture and gets the same cover as
rugby, hockey, netball, etc.)

Smoking pot on the sideline, bongs being given out as prizes, etc. I really
haven't seen much of this at a serious tournament for many years, and
certainly not at junior tournaments. If you are really concerned about
keeping minors safe, then you can always make alternative accommodation
arrangements. For example, GB U17s at tour 2 all stayed at home (Birmingham
lot) or at the coaches house. That throws up a different set of child
protection issues but guidelines get discussed and agreed. Airbadgers always
find a hostel or scout site to camp at away from the tournament, I try to
day trip it as I struggle to get female staff/over 18s to accompany my
teams, and so on. Coaches do what they think is best for their juniors with
the limited resources they have.

Active teams in London - Discy Business are the only ones that attend junior
nationals and Latymer High School in Hammersmith play, as do various other
schools, apparently. Check out http://kevlowe.co.nr/junior_map.html
(I haven't updated the details on this site for a while so if anyone wants
to email me with updates, I'll gladly add them or change their details).

Stress saving advice - Try to get weekly time in the sports hall, get them
playing outside all weathers early, get them to a tournament and they'll be
hooked! Then get them hooked in year 7. Don't take it personally when the
head of PE refuses to recognise it as a real sport because 'a dog can play'.
I've seen dogs knock footballs around but it doesn't mean they'll get signed
up by a premiership team, well, maybe Man City or Chelsea would sign them,
but no one that doesn't have a bottomless pit of money. Dates for U17
Indoors and U20 Indoors should be decided upon soon, and bids for outdoors
will be requested in September. Weekend tournaments often need county
approval and though some are happy with a couple of weeks notice, others
want 8 weeks notice. If you want to see sample risk assessments, parental
consent forms, medical forms, etc. that we use for tournaments, just ask.

XEUFC, maybe there are some opportunities there. Off the back of Worlds in
Heilbronn, Germany got 7 local schools playing and most of those 11 year
olds formed Germany's team playing in Southampton 2007 and they were
extremely good by then. Talk to Si when they're back from World Games.

Good luck.

Kev.

Hi,

Can anyone that is a member of the junior forum please log in and add comments to the various decisions that must be decided upon very quickly. Some concern pickups for this weekend. Other topics include a proposal for the bidding process for indoors next year, and there will be another one attempting to fix the date of next year's indoors, U17s Indoors and outdoors.

If any team isn't represented by their coach, captain or a player, then register at
http://www.freeyabb.com/juniors/index.php?mforum=juniors. Every active junior team is entitled to be represented.

Kevin.

Do you have any idea of the schedule for Junior Nationals at the weekend yet?

Or even likely start times?

Or even just what time the Capts Meeting and / or first game is likely to be?

It would be very helpful to know at least this last point ASAP as we try to
co-ordinate travel to Manchester on the Saturday morning.

Cheers
