We are now looking for bids to host the 2008 National Junior Outdoor
Championships. There will need to be at least 4 outdoor pitches, ideally
more as we would hope to get at least 20 junior teams there (17 teams
attended in 2007). It needs to be a 2 day tournament, so camping is
important. A central location is preferable, but most teams will travel to
almost anywhere in the country for a 2 day junior tournament.
For guidance on running a tournament, please refer to the UKUA policy
http://www.ukultimate.com/files/How_to_run_a_UKUA_tour_5.pdf
Don't feel you have to provide everything, but the closer we get to these
high standards, the better.
We're preferably looking for a bid that can at least accommodate:
- 4-6 pitches for two days
- Medical staff
- Cheap, safe accommodation / Camping on site
- Affordable entry fee
Any extras such as venue for party, bouncy castles, swimming, etc. must be
fully risk assessed. Remember that the majority of participants will be
under 18, and teachers/coaches/responsible adults (who may themselves only
be 18) are putting their careers and reputations on the line when taking a
junior team to a tournament.
Weekend clashes are inevitable, but some are preferable to others. For
reference, here is a list of events already scheduled. Hosting the
tournament during the exam period or outside of term time (including
weekends at the start or end of term or even half term) will drastically
reduce the amount of teams that can enter. I really can't suggest what is
the best weekend to clash with, but I suspect a clash with Mixed Tour is
very likely.
Open Tour 1 - Apr 5/6
Junior Girls selection - Apr 12
Open Tour 2 - Apr 26/27
Uni Outdoor Open - May 3/4
Open Tour 3 - May 10/11
Mixed Tour 1 - Jun 7/8
Mixed Tour 2 - Jun 28/29
Mixed Tour 3 - Jul 12/13
Add to that the likelihood of a European tournament for GB Girls/GB U17s
Open in Eastern Europe, probably in early July. Flexibility with the date
for a venue is going to be very important in the bids. GCSEs tend to be over
by June 22nd but watch out for year 11 proms.
If you would like to submit a bid, then please send an 'email of interest'
with a brief outline ASAP to me at kev_lowe@..., and then a full bid
before February 29th. All bids (including emails of interest) will be
published when received on the public area at
http://www.freeyabb.com/phpbb/index.php?mforum=juniors
The bids will then be considered that weekend (with many of the bids
committee at Junior Indoor nationals) and decisions announced before U17s
indoors the following weekend. Please be aware that we have already had 5
initial emails of interest in putting a bid to host this tournament.
Deadlines will be enforced properly this year, and compromise bids will not
be sought if correctly submitted bids fully meet the bid criteria. The two
most important factors when deciding which junior indoor bid to accept were
the dates and location.
Good luck, and let's ensure that these national tournaments continue to be
annual events as they have been since 2004.
Kevin (on behalf of the junior bids committee)
