This Sunday saw a junior development tournament take place in Malpas,
Cheshire. Following the success of last year when 11 teams competed, this
year 16 teams participated. Most of the good junior teams had split into
multiple teams and brought in many younger and inexperienced players
(including a number of 8 and 9 year olds). This gave more chances to the new
school teams from Colwyn Bay and from Bishops in Chester who won most
improved as they won their opening 4 games.

There were no trophies for winning the tournament as the emphasis was on
development and inclusion, but that didn't stop the competitive edge,
especially with last year's winners Deeds Deeds Deeds (apologies to our
friends from Leeds) and hosting Ocelot teams. All teams had a limit of 2 GB
Juniors on pitch or 3 GB U17s/GB2 players.

The semi finals were contested by Deeds and Grove (both Mowers teams); Sexy
air and Aquajuice (both Ocelots teams). Deeds and Sexy air won through and
met in the final which went to 7-7 at time. Sudden death, a couple of
careless throws by both teams, and then the most outrageous layout catch I
have ever seen in 17 years old playing Ultimate. He couldn't have set the
scene any better, sudden death in the final and a low fast hammer from
Jacko. Somehow Josh Walkden Smith (GB U17s captain) laid out after the disc
had passed him and caught the disc at head height and landed right at the
back of the endzone. Having played GB Juniors for 2 years already and still
only 16, we might just have someone even more promising than Scando coming
through the ranks. Definitely one to watch for the future.
