I just wanted to stress to everyone in the UK junior ultimate scene the importance of increasing their fitness and training. Considering the Junior season is over and in a few weeks a lot of players will go back to school, college or start Uni soon, I thought now is the time for everyone to understand a little better the difference between our squad and the top four at Worlds. I know a lot of players are rugby players, or tennis players, or footy players who are all well conditioned for their sport and are generally quite fit. I'd like to point out that the fitness for Ultimate is totally different, and I really believe that if you or your team really wants to make an impression next year or in years after then you should really up the fitness training.
Whilst being obliterated by USA 17-2, the thing that impresses you most is how quick they are, how high they can jump, how long they can run, how far they can throw. There is no secret formula to winning, they played a 3-4 against us and sent guys deep. We tried it back, they turned us over. Lots.
If as a country we really wanna push these teams and give them a run for their money, we need to be at a much highler level than we are now. In no way is that supposed to be insulting - the number of players playing now is amazing considering where we were only 3 years ago, but let's use that increase properly and really make them sweat come Euro's next year and Worlds in 2008. If Junior Ultimate at home is more competitive, and people push the teams around them harder, teams like USA, Sweden, Canada won't touch us.
Everyone has the potential to make that step up. Really raise the bar guys, and let's show them come Europeans/Worlds next year what GB is all about.
