Hello All,
Please post this questionnaire to your respective leagues. The information
gathered by the leagues participating (hopefully all of them) will be taken into
account for the logo creation.
The deadline for feedback is December 4, 2009 as we need to get rolling (pun
intended) on the logo creation. We have some ideas, but need YOUR LEAGUE to give
feed back for details.

Thank you,

After 2 years of recreational roller derby, and one session of Park District Derby Classes, we are now kicking off Derby Extra Lite, skating and roller derby for kids 7-12. This will also be through our local park district (so they do all the registration and collecting of money, we teach, and invoice them to get paid). We are working out "skates" (we have a deal with a local rink to rent R3s by the session to our Park District ladies, not sure if we will do the same for kids).
We held a Friends and Family Skate in our space last night and had about 15 kids from ages 5-12 or so, having a blast, begging to do rat races! (I was such a proud mom as my 7 year old daughter worked really hard to slalom through cones, and she loves her gear saying she likes being armored!) I love watching kids have fun skating, and am hoping this will lead to a Derby Lite competitive Jr. League at some point.
In any case, the more kids that skate and know about/dream about roller derby, the better for derby for a long time to come!

Hi Everyone, I just want to share my excitement! Though I only have eight girls to start a roller derby league in Richland Center, Wisconsin, we're officially on our way! These girls are regular skaters at the roller rink in town and so were naturals to be the founding members. We are starting practice on Monday.
They're all psyched up and are ready to start recruiting their friends and spread the word at their schools. I hope by January to have 30 girls and, thus, two teams.
As far as I know the only registered junior derby league in Wisconsin is in Appleton. I've been in touch with Fisted Cysta and she has offered us some opportunities to meet. Her juniors will be featured at some upcoming women's derby half-times. I'm positive that we will be able to get at least some of our girls up there after the first of the year. I also hope to get our paperwork done by January so we can get registered with the state as a non-profit
organization and thus get USARS insurance and sign on as a league with the WFTDA.
Richland Center is in the unique position, with pros and cons, of not having its own adult derby league. We are not too far from Madison, and I do have some connections with the women's league there.
So anyone with comments, suggestions, advice, general "yippeeeees! " I'd love to hear from you.

Does anyone remember the quote from "Whip It" that Razor said when the girls
were trying out for the "Hurl Scouts"? I remember something like, "this isn't
just about cool names and...blah, blah, blah..." I am having an organizational
meeting for Richland Center, Wisconsin's newly forming junior derby league and I
wanted to keep his quote in mind. I've overheard one girl trying to get some
other girls to come to the meeting and she said something like "you will be cool
if you do it." I believe this to be true, but I really don't want kids to get
the wrong idea...it has to be balanced with some of the discipline and hard work
and sportsmanship before it is truly cool. I certainly don't want a girl to
convince her parents to sign her up because of peer pressure either!

Subject: Re: [junior_roller_derby] How many leagues?
We have 22 leagues according to our Database, but only about 1/2 our members have actually filled out there info, so there is probably more. Celtic Club-her is working on that. I've asked that she send emails to all members not listed in the database to add there info or risk removal from the group.
A word of caution about that number (22 leagues). We have not yet defined what constitues a league. How many skaters? We have some members that claim a league name, but with fewer than 12 skaters they don't even really have a team.
Anyway, Club-her is working on it!
Great Question!
MAJOR PROBLEM!

When I'm talking to prospective skaters, parents, facilities, sponsors, you name it...I talk about how junior roller derby is a new and quickly growing sport and how we're one of 17 leagues in the U.S. and how that number is growing everyday. I get that number from the derby roster site here: http://www.derbyros ter.com/junior. html cuz i thought everyone was on there, but now I realize everyone is not on there. :)

I think the question will eventually be how many kids are involved in Jr. Derby.
Because if you add up leagues, classes, camps, etc. (and all the ways that the
jr. version will eventually show up) it will be more than just the leagues.
And since new jr. leagues are popping up every day, I'm sure it will be hard to
tell for a while.

WE are having our first informational meeting on Nov 1. We have set up a
facebook page Northeast Ohio Junior Roller Derby...we will let the girls choose
a name when they all get together. Is there a form we need to fill out to be on
an official list for jr. league? There a a bit of a buzz so hopefully we are
looking to have a good turn out.

well I can add Humboldt County to the list. We are an up and coming Jr derby league....our first event will be a two day training clinic in Jan, and then hopefully through a partnership with the City of Eureka (northern California) we will have a regular practice space for the league in 2010. Very Exciting!!!! The teens in our area have been patiently awaiting this for about a year, and it's going to be great to finally be able to offer this to them. -Thunder Muffin Redwood Rollers, Humboldt County, CA

Hey Roy. Witch's Brewski here from South Central Alaska Roller Dolls (SCAR'D).
We're in close to the same place as you as a budding organization. We have a handful of committed girls and even a few guys who'd like to be refs. We're meeting weekly at open skate, which may change to 2x a week in November. We can't do a formal practice at open skate and its hard to get them to focus on anything for very long, but we do a few line drills and i've been able to work 1:1 with everyone.
Right now, we're focusing on recruiting & fundraising. We've had a couple of potential practice facilities fall through and I'm carefully negotiating for our third right now. We were hoping to hold a 5 week session before the holiday season, but that is looking more and more like it won't happen. If nothing else, I'd like to do a weekend boot camp, but its hard to convince parents to pay for all the gear + a registration fee + usars for one weekend. If not, we'll just focus on the 10 week session we want to start in January. With the USARS $$, it really makes more sense to wait for the new year anyway.
We're all in this together so don't hesitate to post questions or lessons learned as you move forward! Witchy

The school program that is starting up down here is also technically a "club" at the moment, but they have a dedicated support staff, and it is an all girls school for leadership. I'm hopefull that we can make it an official derby program. JRDA should go a long way towards legitimizing the sport and helping to take it mainstream for kids under 18.
I go today for orientation and background check to become an official/legal "Volunteer" in our school district.
Thanks for the positive feedback to our group!

MAJOR! the seattle derby brats were originally PATHFINDER JUNIOR DERBY at a local public school. the gym was not in a state to be used for derby as the kids got better it was too small.
the school has since closed/moved to a new location and I brought derby to a rink to open it to more girls.
it was cool to be an afterschool sport - we "technically" were an afterschool "club" which let part of the funding come from the boys and girls club.
i had to be an employee of both the school district and the parks department. good thing i can pass a background check.
the hard part was a lot of girls just did it to have an afterschool activity and would sign up and not show up. I also got my cell phone stolen by a kid, parents never came, it had it's challenges. but it would be cool if it was successful. I didnt have a lot of teacher support as my time in the gym was scheduled at the same time as the big weekly manditory teacher
meeting.

We're lucky here in Austin to have two radically different styles of derby, and
both leagues will be working together to help us make this program successful.

MAJOR! the seattle derby brats were originally PATHFINDER JUNIOR DERBY at a
local public school. the gym was not in a state to be used for derby as the kids
got better it was too small.
the school has since closed/moved to a new location and I brought derby to a
rink to open it to more girls.
it was cool to be an afterschool sport - we "technically" were an afterschool
"club" which let part of the funding come from the boys and girls club.
i had to be an employee of both the school district and the parks department.
good thing i can pass a background check.
the hard part was a lot of girls just did it to have an afterschool activity and
would sign up and not show up. I also got my cell phone stolen by a kid, parents
never came, it had it's challenges. but it would be cool if it was successful. I
didnt have a lot of teacher support as my time in the gym was scheduled at the
same time as the big weekly manditory teacher meeting.

A group of veteran and new derby womenn are meeting to start up the Northeast Ohio Junior Roller Derby League. Any information that you have that will help us get a foot in the door would be great. We are affiliated with the Burning River Roller Girls but the Jr. league will be it's own seperate entity. We have quite a few interest young girls ready to go. I will be keeping in touch to ask for help or just to let you know where we are at. WE have started a facebook page for anyone interested in checking up. "Northeast Ohio Junior Roller Derby League"

Hello Everyone,
I just saw the movie Whip-it last night. I thought I'd share a few thoughts with
everyone.
About me:
I am currently a manager of the Austin Derby Brats. Our program is a part of the
Texas Rollergirls flat track roller derby. The Texas Rollergirls started the
modern flat track roller derby revolution right here in Austin, Texas.
I am also a referee and production crew memeber for TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls,
also right here in Austin, Texas. Yes, there is a real TXRD!!! They even have a
team called the Holy Rollers. Much of the "derby" in the movie was based on
their league.
About TXRD and Austin roller derby:
There is alot of debate here in Austin about who started what and when. What I
can say for sure is that while WFTDA is evolving flat track into an amazing
international sport which began with the Texas Rollergirls, the original design
of roller derby was to be "sports entertainment". TXRD has remained true to the
original rules and intention of the sport as entertainment set up back in
2001/2002. Fighting is allowed in TXRD rules, HOWEVER, it is very controlled and
the skaters actually practice fighting so that nobody gets hurt. Either way,
both leagues are made up of amazingly talented athletes, and the two very
different styles of roller derby have allowed each league to prosper with very
dedicated fans (like me!).
If you are a junior roller girl and want to visit the TXRD website I recommend
you visit it with a parent or guardian. There is a funny video on the front page
with many of my friends in it.
Here is my rating system:
>:-) =Liked
>:-( =Not so much
>:-) I liked the fact that roller derby was used to show a breakaway from
traditional roles for women. I also liked that is emphasized the sisterhood
shared between skaters.
>:-( Bliss should have talked to her parents first. They probably would have
said no, but....
>:-) Bliss's dad took the time to research TXRD on the internet and learn more
about the sport and it changed his views.
>:-( Boys have cooties, and only cause trouble until much later in life. I
know, I am one. I'm also a dad of three daughters. I've seen the distruction
they can cause. Stay focused, family, school, derby!
>:-) Bliss did her homework on the bus to derby practice. Smart skaters are
better skaters. Just ask Smarty Pants of the real TXRD Holy Rollers. Her skate
number number is 4.0 just like her grades. She is also one of the best skaters
in the world on any track.
>:-( People who don't know derby might think the junior programs are like the
movie. We'll need to make sure everyone understands the differences.
>:-) I liked the way the family came together in the end. I also liked the way
they showed Maggie Mayhem was a good mother because The Austin Derby Brats have
four skaters with moms in TXRD and they are all good moms. I'll bet that's true
for most derby moms.
Overall I thought it was a really good movie and recommend seeing it.
As with everything I recommend junior skaters see this movie with their
parents/guardians and talk about what they liked and didn't like.
If you do see it, CLOSE YOUR EYES WHEN THEY GO SWIMMING, IT'S REALLY GROSS!!!!!
Best Regards,
MAJOR PROBLEM!

Hi, Appleton, I lost your contact info. Please contact me. I have questions about WI-related league issues. Carolyn
Another reminder that the Junior Roller Derby Association (JRDA) is forming, and all junior leagues are welcome. If you are not yet a member please let me know so I can add you. The goal is to have two representatives from every league.
JRDA is currently a closed group and requires invitation. Invited memembers will be responsible for establising a governing body and defining the sport of Junior Roller DeDerby, so also be ready to add another helping of committment to your already full plates:-)
One caveat (and I do apologize for this): I do a quick google search on everyone that requests entry. I am looking to see some kind of affiliation with an established adult league even if informal such as the coordinator or trainer is an existing or retired rollergirl etc. I don't have any other way of filtering legit from illegit at this time. So when you make your request, please make a comment that might help me in my background check. I also like facebook and myspace because your friends comments tell me alot about you:-)
Ultimately it will be up to the elected board to set final criteria for membership, so for now I'm just using best judgement. I do apologize for any hypocracy as my wife and I started our program with zero affiliations 2 years ago. So if you get denied right away, please be patient and persistent. Ultimately we all want everyone to succeed.
