Hello, my name is Maria. I’m writing to you about
a school project that I’m doing. For my ninth grade
honors government class we are to participate in this
year’s National History Day. The theme of it is Turning
Points in History, meaning that we are to chose any
person, place, thing, or event that has some how effected
history. Because of my interest in women in sports,
specifically soccer, I decided to have my topic be Title IX. I
was hoping that you could answer these seven
questions about Title IX for me, to help with my
project.<br><br>1. Have you always felt that you could play any
sport that you wanted to, despite the fact that you’re
a female?<br><br><br>2. Do you think that Title IX
is effective? Is there any way, in your mind, to
improve it?<br><br><br>3. How do you feel women in
athletics verses women not in athletics are treated in
schools?<br><br><br>4. Do you feel that women are now getting as equal
opportunities as men are in sports in schools? Do you feel that
these opportunities are given to women in other parts
of life, not just sports?<br><br><br>5. When you
were in school, did you feel that the male and female
training facilities were equal? What about now, do you
feel that the training facilities are
equal?<br><br><br>6. Now that you’re a professional athlete, do you
feel that you still get as equal opportunities as
professional male athletes, even though Title IX doesn’t apply
to you anymore?<br><br><br>7. Is there anything else
that I didn’t ask that you’d like to say about Title
IX?<br><br><br><br>Thank you very much for taking your time to read this
and answer my questions, it is greatly
appreciated.<br><br>Sincerely,<br>Maria<br>reeses@...

In honor of Ace posting about Kate's bird, here's
a list of "Things You Should Know"...references to
past subjects brought up on Shannon MacMillan and
Tiffeny Milbrett's boards on AOL:<br><br>(1) A bird
attacked Kate Sobrero in the fifth minute of a friendly
match with Ireland in September. It's a frequent topic
of humor with us.<br><br>(2) AceTachyon can make a
musical out of any topic.<br><br>(3) Sue is always right,
mainly because she recognizes that same quality in
Beth.<br><br>(4) We're not big fans of Fanta (the sometimes
Captain of the Brazilian team).<br><br>(5) ESPN's
coverage of women's soccer seems to focus on people in the
crowd who are attractively-challenged.<br><br>(6) Cindy
Parlow is qualified to teach latino dances after she
retires.<br><br>(7) Never play golf with Tiffeny Milbrett's mom if
your best shot is the hand wedge.<br><br>(8) When
using the hand wedge, please follow the following
steps: (1) Make sure no one is looking, (2) Pick up the
ball and throw it on the green.<br><br>(9) CreekFreik
(Riss) is afraid of people fighting in Sports Bras in
New York City. (It was a typo that she'll never live
down. She meant to type "Sports Bars".)<br><br>(10)
Shannon MacMillan uses tape instead of tissues.
(Wait...am I remembering that correctly? Wouldn't that cause
chaffing?)<br><br>(11) We accept the fact that men always leave the
toilet seat up, but frankly, we're not happy about
it.<br><br>(12) We fight over what team is the best; it doesn't
matter what sport it is. But I think we all agree that
the San Francisco 49ers are the worst team in
football. Except for the Dallas Cowboys.<br><br>(13) Junior
Mints constitute a huge topic of discussion, especially
when Mac, Jackson, Katie and Carly are involved.
(Note: henceforth, we'll refer to Jackson by his new
nickname -- Little Pele)<br><br>(14) If someone is mean to
you, know that you are among friends. WE'VE GOT YOUR
BACK!!! <br><br>(15) The guy who sings "Mambo #5" failed
geography.<br><br>(16) Martin Short is the most megged talk show host in
the history of television.<br><br>(17) Shannon
MacMillan wants a pony.<br><br>(18) Forget about the
"Aquafina Player of the Game"...OUR favorite indoor soccer
player is whoever uses the door the least amount of
times when entering the field. Jump over the boards and
onto the field!<br><br>OK gang.....anything I'm
forgetting? <br><br>Beth

<br><br>Okay...so it's not AOL, but it's close enough.<br><br>As
was mentioned earlier, once Mac and Millie's AOL
posters learn of the good news, this board will be
good-swamped with messages. As a regular of the aforementioned
boards I can assure you that you will have plenty to
read. Maybe we should buy stock in Visine, maybe send
you a case of it.<br><br>Enjoy Pebble Beach and hope
The Bird (the infamous Killer Bird from the Ireland
game) isn't going to be out and about (or, "oot and
aboot" if I were Canadian--which I'm not so that
probably had no bearing at all on the
subject).<br><br>Enjoy and feel free to join in the
conversations.<br><br>(and before anyone else brings it up, only ONE musical
at a time...)<br><br>(okay...where'd I put my
notes...)<br><br>--Ace

Network to Visit Hundreds of Communities in 2000
<br><br>Strengthening its Big Help volunteer campaign, Nickelodeon, the
No.1 kids network, announced a holiday celebration of
kid volunteerism with The Big Holiday Help-a-thon.
The sixth-annual event, hosted by Nickelodeon star
Kenan Thompson, features Britney Spears and `NSYNC
performing in the "The Big Help Holiday Jam" in Los Angeles,
along with a dance party in New York City hosted by
Nickelodeon veteran Mike O'Malley. During the dance party,
kids will<br>be asked to call in to pledge volunteer
hours in their communities and nominate their towns for
a visit by Nickelodeon's Big Helpmobile. The Big
Holiday Help-a-thon is scheduled to air Saturday,
December 11 from 8 to 10 p.m. ET/PT. <br><br>Big Help
spokesperson Mariah Carey, along with Elton John and Mia Hamm,

activities and how their personal causes have made an
impact. <br><br>Additionally, the network will continue
to focus the program on local volunteer efforts by
making hundreds of visits around the country, including
10 Team Big Help Tour stops to refurbish community
parks. <br><br>"We have made helping a part of kids'
everyday lives by bringing volunteerism right to their
neighborhoods. To show kids that they really can make a
difference, we visited nearly 100 towns last year and
refurbished 10 community parks across the country," says
Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President of Public
Affairs and Chief of Staff, Nickelodeon. "We strongly
believe that if kids get involved in their communities,
they will be volunteers for life.<br>So we're
encouraging kids - along with their friends and family -- to
give time to their communities this holiday season."
<br><br>This year's Help-a-thon events will cover both coasts
with the Holiday Jam in Los Angeles on November 22 and
the dance party - which will feature the taped
concert - live from New York on December 11. These events
are a celebration of the past year's Big Help
volunteer efforts and a call to action for the year 2000.

On Sunday, November 21, CBS is airing a special
on the US Women's Soccer team. I think it is one of
the US vs. the World matches (rumor has it they're
taping the Nov 14 game in New Jersey).<br><br>It is
airing at different times around the country because of
NFL football. It seems to be on CBS at either 4 PM or
4:30 PM Eastern. It is scheduled to last one hour.

November 2, 1999<br><br>Hey,
everyone,<br><br>It's been pretty much a whirlwind for me since the Cup
ended, and this month is going to be especially hectic.
The Toys 'R Us Victory tour has already started, and
so far, I've been to four cities, and we have eight
more to go. The tour is stopping mostly in cities that
weren't hosts to any of the World Cup games, so it's a
great chance for people who didn't get to see any of
the games in person. And, it's wonderful for us to be
able to meet with fans face-to-face, because fan
support played such a big part in our success.<br><br>I
just spent the day in Los Angeles filming a segment of
"The Jersey," the Disney Channel's original sports
series, with my teammate Brandi Chastain. Afterward,
Brandi, Shannon MacMillan and I were guests on the
"Martin Short Show." All of this was after I filmed a
commercial for Allstate Insurance after midnight last night
in Chicago! So, I'm pretty wiped out right now, but
I can't say it hasn't been fun.<br><br>We now have
a two-week break from the tour. I'll be going to
Pebble Beach this weekend to spend some quality time
with my husband, and get in some golf, which is good
therapy after all this travel. I'll keep you posted on my
activities!<br><br>Julie<br><br><br>c 1999 Athlete Direct, Inc. All rights
