Pizza next on the menu for Mac & Joy
Joy Fawcett is working on the perfect pizza recipe.
By Karyn Lush
(Sept. 17, 2004) – Joy Fawcett’s days kicking the soccer ball are numbered
but pretty soon you may find her practicing her new forte - flipping pizzas.
Fawcett along with Shannon MacMillan, a close friend from the national team,
are investigating dishing out pies smothered in melted cheese, zesty tomato
sauce and a variety of fresh toppings in their very own pizza shop.
“Right now we’re thinking of maybe Mac & Joy’s Pizza,” MacMillan said
of
what they might call their joint. “Joy’s husband and my brother are trying
to
look for places, get investors. We just think it would be something fun to
do, have a sort of sports theme catered to teams with a team room and sponsor
some local youth teams. It’s just a way to give back to the community and
have fun with it.”
Both self-proclaimed pizza lovers – Fawcett prefers spinach and mushroom
while MacMillan savors plain old mushroom – have seen their passion for
Italian
pies combine with their desire to provide a restaurant with an atmosphere
perfect for families. They plan to open one pizza parlor near MacMillan in San
Diego and another near Fawcett in Mission Viejo.
“In my area, it’s hard to find a good pizza place that’s good for parents
and the kids,” Fawcett
Shannon MacMillan hopes to give back to the community by having Mac & Joy's
Pizza sponsor local youth teams.
said. “You know, comfortable for the parents to hang out and good for the
kids to run around. We want to kind of have both environments and then also
have a little section for those people who don’t have kids and still want to
eat.
”
All of this begs one question – who is going to be doing the cooking?
“That’s Joy,” MacMillan quickly made known. “I’ll be the host.
We’re
perfecting a recipe right now. It’s fun. We have little pizza parties and
taste
out the recipes.”
Fawcett was even willing to shed some light on the secret to the recipe.
“Pretty much it’s a stuffed pizza and you use fresh ingredients,” she
offered.
While Fawcett is manning the oven, MacMillan is devising a plan for the shops
’ decorations. As you could have guessed, soccer will be the main theme.
“We’re collecting jerseys from all the national team players to put up on
the wall,” MacMillan said. “I told Joy she’s going to have to come to my
restaurant and sign her life away, sign autographs. It’s just something fun
that
where we can involve coaching and sponsoring young teams and share our love.”
