With the approval of contacts at U.S.Soccer and FIFA Headquarters,
The San Diego Soccer Soccer Coalition is now asking for local support
to get Qualcomm Stadium on the Final List of Stadiums for the 2003
FIFA World Cup. The list is to be voted on, and approved within THE
NEXT EIGHT DAYS, so it is imperative to get your voice heard as soon
as possible. If you know of others who would support Qualcomm
hosting at least one match this October, then please pass this on to
them ASAP.
FIFA and U.S.Soccer members have indicated to me that any SIGNIFICANT
sign of support for Qualcomm (i.e., large number of valid requests
and letters of support from San Diego soccer leadership) WOULD keep
San Diego in the running for consideration as a candidate to host.
Qualcomm WOULD BE READY (post-Padres) to be groomed for soccer in
time for AT LEAST the final two weekends of the World Cup in October.
This fact should warrant serious consideration by FIFA and U.S.
Soccer as a site for a.- one semi-final and the Championship Match,
or b.- one semi-final, or c.- only the Championship Match. FIFA
executives themselves have told me that Qualcomm's size gives it a
real chance, because they would MUCH rather have these final round
matches held in a stadium that would more likely be full (at 65,000+)
than in a stadium that, especially in the case of U.S.A.'s absense in
the Final Four or the Championship, would possibly be only half full
(such as the Rose Bowl, which is ALSO competing for the Championship
match).
We certainly would HOPE that the U.S.A. would once again go ALL THE
WAY, but this consideration is a valid and important point. This
event, unlike in '99, will be competing directly with MLB baseball
playoffs, NHL & ECHL hockey, and the NFL, besides all of the other
soccer and college sports that always occur in the month of October.
PLEASE SHOW YOUR SUPPORT by contacting the U.S. Soccer President, and
FIFA's marketing directors in Switzerland. If you are one who is in
a position to have access to any U.S. Soccer officials, FIFA board
members, U.S. league staffers at MLS, MISL, and WUSA, or the AYSO,
then please also contact thouse you know who can help in our efforts.
Here are the guidelines:
FOR U.S. Soccer, send a FAX (on official letterhead if from a group)
to the President, no later than next Monday evening.
U.S. Soccer President is DR. S. Robert CONTIGUGLIA 312-808-1301
If you wish to phone the U.S. Soccer office, use 312-808-1300
FOR FIFA Headquarters, send a FAX (ESPECIALLY if you are a leader)
to main office (24 hrs./day), not later than THIS Sunday p.m. our
time.
Here is the exact number from anywhere in USA 011 41 41 727 0016
(official To: line, FIFA Marketing AG, Zug, SWITZERLAND)
If you wish to leave a comment of support during the weekend, they
have a phone number that can be used for that (also 24 hrs./day):
011 41 41 727 0000 If you choose this latter option, please be sure
to speak in English slowly, and to identify that you are a supporter
from San Diego who wants our stadium to host one or more of the World
Cup matches. It doesn't hurt to add your own personalized knowledge
or history of the stadium's success with many large sporting events.
U.S. Soccer and FIFA WILL take a look and listen to ALL comments, and
should we prove to them that we deserve to be one of the 6 or 7 host
cities, they will surely give it serious thought when they vote.
