The Red Wings could be without catcher Chris Heintz for at least three
weeks as Minnesota Twins star Joe Mauer mends from a strained left
quadriceps.
Mauer was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. An MRI exam revealed
swelling and some bleeding.
Mauer told reporters "it could be more" than the 15 days designated.
Heintz was called up to take Mauer's place on the 25-man roster, although
Mike Redmond will assume the bulk of catching duties.
Heintz hit .277 in 12 games with Rochester and was pulled from the lineup
before Sunday's Red Wings game against the Ottawa Lynx.
"It was kind of a blow to the players' morale," Wings manager Stan Cliburn
said.
Jose Morales, who entered Monday fourth in the International League in
hitting at .357, will be the main catcher for Rochester with veteran
Matthew LeCroy also available. Infielder Glenn Williams is the emergency
catcher, but he is on the disabled list with a sore shoulder, so the
catching spot is a bit precarious right now.
Rehab watch: Mauer could be ready to play in a few minor-league games on a
rehab stint by Memorial Day weekend, as he did three years ago in
Rochester.
If so, the Wings are waiting: They're home May 24-31.
Fans hoping to see a "Rocket" launch at Frontier Field might have to pray
a little harder. Roger Clemens could pitch for Triple-A
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre as he works his way back to the Yankees, but the
Wings visit Scranton June 1-2 and host the Yankees June 3-4. Clemens
figures to be pitching for New York by then.
Brass in town: Twins farm director Jim Rantz and former Twins manager Tom
Kelly, now a special assistant to general manager Terry Ryan, are in town
to watch the Wings. They'll be in town through Thursday.
Slippery when wet: The Wings have committed 29 errors in the first 24
games, a pace that would give them 174 for the season. That would be the
most by a Rochester team since the 2001 Wings committed 197.
Liriano on track: Injured Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano has taken a
break for his training regiment in Fort Myers, Fla., to visit his
teammates in Minneapolis.
The former Red Wings star, who is recovering from Tommy John elbow
surgery, said doctors told him he should be 100 percent ready to pitch
next season.
Liriano was 12-3 for Minnesota last year until the elbow injury shut him
down.
Parking today: The Red Wings Express will take fans from PAETEC Park
parking lots P1 (off Smith St.) to Frontier Field and back for today's
11:05 a.m. game against Toledo. Parking in the lot is $5; the shuttle is
free.
Anybody home? Reason No. 998 why Ottawa is losing professional baseball
after this season: The Lynx have played 14 home dates and drawn 15,222.
Game day
Matchup: Red Wings vs. Toledo Mud Hens, Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit
Tigers.
When/where: 11:05 this morning at Frontier Field. Gates open at 10.
Tickets: $10, $8.50 and $6. Call (585) 423-9464.
Radio: WYSL-AM (1040).
Pitchers: Red Wings RHP Scott Baker (2-1, 2.40 ERA) vs. Mud Hens RHP Ron
Chiavacci (1-2, 4.75).
Promotions: Students from around the area will enjoy exhibits from
throughout Rochester on "Education Day."

Driving a cart is as close to actual golfing as Joe Mauer gets today. Instead, he just watches folks like his Dad Jake hit the ball. Mauer must get used to watching from the sidelines with his leg injury keeping him on the shelf.
"It just finally started going downhill. I got to the point where I really couldn't get in the field to play. It's real frustrating. You can't go out there and help your teammates out. It's pretty hard to watch from the bench", Mauer admitted.
On the 15 day disabled list, doesn't necessarily mean Mauer will be back in 2 weeks. That's optimistic. The injury could be worse than that.
"I hope I'm ready to come off the D.L. when I can. But I've got to make sure
it's right, because it's still pretty early in the year. But it's pretty frustrating right now because you can't really put a timetable on it", Mauer went on to say.
Another Joe, Nathan joins his pal on the Stone Ridge Golf Course in Stillwater today. He says its tough having his battery mate out of the lineup. "We're going to have to scratch away and do what we can to get some runs on the board. Hopefully get some runs early and take some heat off our starting pitchers."
As for those starters. Johan Santana and Carlos Silva have some fun, wearing matching outfits. While the Twins team doctors playing with the pitchers, look fabulous in fuchsia.
"We lost a bet to Johan and Carlos, and the deal was they can choose whatever they want. And they chose that we wear pink at the next golf round", Team Doctor Vijay Eyunni stated.
"They underestimated us and now they're paying the price", Santana said.
Today's tourney benefited the Friends of St.
Paul Baseball.

Minneapolis -- The Minnesota Twins announced after Sunday's game that they have placed catcher Joe Mauer on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 5, with a muscle strain in his left quadriceps.
To replace Mauer on the 25-man roster, the Twins will recall catcher Chris Heintz from Triple-A Rochester in time for Tuesday's game vs. the Chicago White Sox. Heintz was batting .277 (13-for-47) with two doubles and two RBIs in 12 games with the Red Wings.
Heintz began the season with the Twins and appeared in one game before being optioned to Rochester on April 11.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Twins catcher Joe Mauer will undergo a precautionary MRI on Sunday morning due to soreness that he is experiencing in his left quad muscle.
Mauer was originally penciled in to catch Saturday night's game against the Red Sox, but he was scratched about an hour before the game after he experienced even more stiffness in the muscle while running during batting practice.
The quad has been bothering the catcher off and on for the first month
of the season, but never has it gotten to the level of soreness that he felt following Friday night's game. That's when Mauer felt he might have done something to aggravate the muscle while running the basepaths, feeling it catch.
But it wasn't until after sitting down following batting practice on Saturday that Mauer decided the soreness was enough to keep him out of the game.
"I tried to get it loose, and after BP I always sit down to watch video, and when I got up it was pretty tight," Mauer said. "I was trying to get in [the lineup], but it's probably smart that I didn't play tonight. I've been playing through some stuff, but it hadn't been this bad yet. "
This is not the first time the quad has interfered with Mauer's spot in the lineup, as he was benched during last Friday's game in Detroit because Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was concerned about using both catchers. Mauer was able to pinch-hit in that game
and delivered the game-winning two-run single in the eighth inning.
This time, Mauer told Gardenhire that while he might be able to catch in an emergency, he wouldn't be able to run the bases. The stiffness this time was much more severe than in past instances, when the muscle had only bothered him a little bit.
"He said he'd need somebody to run for him, so he's obviously pretty stiff and pretty sore," Gardenhire said.
After being examined by team doctors before Saturday's game, Mauer was scheduled to undergo the MRI to make sure that nothing serious is causing the soreness.
"Whenever you say MRI, athletes don't like that word, but you want to know what it is and how to attack it and get better," Mauer said. "Hopefully it's not too bad and I can be out there real soon."
The timing of Mauer's injury coincides with the Twins already playing without their cleanup hitter,
Michael Cuddyer, who suffered a bruised back in a tumble on the basepaths during the series at Tampa Bay this past week. Now, the possibility is that the Twins will have to go without their Nos. 3 and No. 4 hitters again on Sunday.
"We're a little banged up, as a whole," Mauer said. "You want to be out there every day, especially in an atmosphere like there was tonight, and help your teammates out. But right now, [my leg] is really tight and I can't do much with it."

I have yet to hear anything about any Mauer signings except the annual autograph party on June 16th. He usually does the gloves for kids a couple time a year but no new yet. If you hear anything let me know and I'll do the same.
I’ve made a few changes on the fan club site and Yahoo group.
The URL: http://www.mauerpauer.com is now pointing to a dedicated page for the Mauer’s. To accommodate for a new page I had to combine the “Say Hey!” page with the “About Us” page. In the transition some of the URL’s may have been broken. If you run across something that is not working it would be great if you’d let me know. For anyone wanting to share their MySpace page or websites please send them to me and I will post them.
The new Mauer Pauer page will have the Mauer baseball school information, registration forms &Mauer charities and forms to purchase T-shirts, CD’s etc. When Teresa sends us the form for the Mauer Friends & Family day you will find it here also. The
Mauer family will dictate the contents of the page.
The Infoline 952-953-7777 has information now about the Mauer Baseball – Softball School after the main message or you can press 1 to go directly to it after dialing the number. You can also listen online on the Mauer Pauer page.

No Twin has registered more than four at-bats against Jackson. Jason Bartlett is an intriguing player to watch against Jackson, as he has three walks and a hit in four appearances. It will also be interesting to see where he falls in the batting order, now that Cirillo and Castillo are back.

Cuts and bruises adorn Joe Mauer's hands. Thick, cushioned bandages cover some of the worst, the bone bruises every catcher is subject to, while plain bandages do for the others. There are nicks that go uncovered, and bruises that never seem to heal.
This is the glamour of his position.
A look at Mauer's battered hands provides a visual lesson
in what the 24-year-old catcher deals with every day, but this is a small sampling.
Last week in Kansas City, Mauer woke up and "felt like it was August or September" after a rough night behind the plate. Some errant throws from the previous night's starter, Sidney Ponson, had bounced off Mauer's shins, and he had been run into at the plate by Mike Sweeney, who knocked the ball out of Mauer's glove to score.
But in that same game, the 2006 American League batting champion was 3 for 5, drove in two runs and hit his sixth double of the season - consistent at the plate while getting beat up behind it.
One season after becoming the first catcher to win an AL batting title, Mauer's 2007 has started much like his '06 - only better.
One month into last season, Mauer had a .319 average. He had driven in seven runs, doubled three times and homered once. Months later, after the batting title was his,
talk would swirl around the St. Paul native's ability to repeat his record-setting offensive output.
One month into this season, it seems Mauer is trying to answer that question. He begins May with the best average inthe league at .369. He has nine doubles, 12 runs batted in and one home run.
He played in 25 games this April compared with 20 a year ago, and after 25 games in 2006, his average had dropped to .302.
Pitchers, of course, are taking new approaches with Mauer this season, most coming in hard at the left-handed hitter, and many mixing pitches in each of his at-bats - inside, outside, low, high. The adjustment for Mauer caused discomfort at the plate for the first two weeks of the season (even though he hit .325 during that time).
"I think the first couple weeks ... he was kind of getting beat, and then bam," Twins center fielder Torii Hunter said. "This kid made an adjustment so quick it
just let me know that he's one of the purest hitters I've ever seen with my eyes, and I'm really telling you, I've seen some people play, and he's one of the purest hitters I've ever seen."
Mauer is hitting .429 against right-handed pitchers, .342 against lefties. He is the only catcher in the AL with an on-base percentage of more than .400 (.465, fourth in the AL) or an OPS (on-base, plus slugging) of more than .900 (.977). His power numbers remain modest, but those, Hunter said, will improve soon enough.
"He's only (24); those are baby muscles," Hunter said. "I tell you, when he develops his muscles, becomes a man, with the swing he has. . . . He reminds me of Barry Bonds when he was younger. Barry had power, but Barry made contact. He had a good eye. That's what Mauer does."
Last week television cameras followed Mauer around the Metrodome before a game against Cleveland. The entertainment show "Extra" had
chosen Mauer to be one of its 15 most eligible bachelors and was taping his segment of the show. Mauer hesitated before agreeing to go on camera to advertise his single status. The quiet guy from Cretin-Derham Hall still isn't much for attention.
It's likely Mauer got some ribbing from teammates for his most-eligible standing, but with the even temperament he's known for, Mauer probably took it in stride. And that temperament sticks with Mauer on and off the field.
"You cannot tell if this guy's getting beat or if he's having a bad day," Hunter said. "He's the same guy every day."
Mauer said he learned that lesson last season while watching left fielder Rondell White struggle through a monstrous hitting slump and injuries.
"(White) was the same guy from Day One to the last day of the season," Mauer said. "I picked up on that, just being a true professional, when times are going good or when
they're not, just to be the same person.
"I try to stay on an even keel. In this game, you can get pretty high at one point and get pretty low a week later. I try to be the same kind of guy if I go 0 for 4 with four strikeouts or 4 for 4 with four home runs."
For most of Mauer's game, that quiet calm is all he needs. It's an approach that impresses teammates and works at the plate, helping him stay relaxed and focused. But behind the plate a soft-spoken nature isn't valuable.
A catcher gets second-guessed more than any player on the field, and though Mauer generally takes the position that the pitcher knows best, he said he understands that sometimes he has to speak up during visits to the mound. Trusting the pitcher is a lesson Mauer learned from former Twins pitcher Brad Radke.
"He said he felt like he could throw any pitch at any time as long as he executed," Mauer said. "He told me that in
the first start I got in big-league camp. I was 18 years old. That's something that's always carried with me.
"It can be difficult at times. Sometimes if I yell or do something like that, it's kind of unexpected coming from me, but the bottom line is I just want them to do their best."
What is Mauer's best will be a lingering question all season and in future seasons. His offensive burst in April came despite missing time near the end of spring training to recover from a stress reaction in his lower left fibula, and it shows he's been able to adjust to tougher pitching.
But Mauer's steadiness makes it hard to gauge whether he's a better hitter now than he was in 2006, Twins hitting coach Joe Vavra said.
"It's hard to say whether there are improvements because he's always so steady," Vavra said. "Those types of hitters don't come along very often. You can see through the history of baseball the type of young
hitters that have done what he's done and there aren't that many of them. To sustain that throughout your career is even more difficult. Time will tell whether he can do that, but obviously he's off to a very good start."
