Notes: All-Stars in deed, if not name

Twins to be Clemens' first opponent; Durbin sharp in Minors

ANAHEIM -- The first results of the annual fan voting for All-Stars has been released, and despite being the Major League's batting leader, Twins catcher Joe Mauer's name was nowhere in sight. In fact, the only Twin to show up among the leaders was Torii Hunter, who placed 12th among outfielders.

Though disappointing, the initial results aren't completely unexpected. The Twins' home attendance figure of 574,939 ranks 11th among the 14 American League clubs. The Yankees and Red Sox, who dominated the list with eight of the nine leaders, have a combined home attendance of over two million.

Boston's Jason Varitek leads all American League catchers with 335,417 votes, followed by the Tigers' Ivan Rodriguez, the Yankees' Jorge Posada, the Indians' Victor Martinez and White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski. Mauer currently stands seventh, with 79,102 votes.

Of course, the one vote that is most important to Mauer, that of manager Ron Gardenhire, is firmly in Mauer's corner.

"Everybody who's on the field and has seen this young man play knows he's having an All-Star year, no doubt about it," said Gardenhire.

With almost a month of voting left, Mauer's on-field performance should get him moving up the list. While his four home runs and 23 RBIs compare well to his fellow catchers -- Posada leads with seven home runs and Martinez has 29 RBIs -- it is in batting average where Mauer is head and shoulders above his peers. Mauer's .352 mark is currently .112 ahead of Varitek, and only Pierzynski's .321 mark comes close.

As impressive as these numbers are, Mauer is only getting better. Over his last 17 games, he is hitting .426 with three home runs and 13 RBIs, and when he gets out on the road he's even more dangerous, leading the American League with a .375 road average. He might not be an All-Star in the voting, but there is no doubt he's an All-Star on the field.

Mauer isn't the only Twin who Gardenhire believes deserves All-Star consideration.

"My closer, Joe Nathan, is as good as they get. We're punishing him because we haven't given him many save opportunities. He's as close as you get on this team to an every-year All-Star."

In 16 appearances so far this season, Nathan is 3-0 with six saves and a 2.12 ERA.

Finally, there is one other Twin who Gardenhire believes deserves to be higher on the list, and that is Hunter.

"Torii Hunter is also an All-Star. Believe me, when people come to a game, they come to see Torii Hunter play. He can shine with the best of them."

Hunter is batting .268 for the year with nine home runs, 32 RBIs and four stolen bases.

Rockets' red glare: It's official: Roger Clemens is back, and the date that has been penciled in for his return to a Major League mound is June 22, in Houston. That date just happens to be the final game of a three-game set featuring the Minnesota Twins.

When Gardenhire was told of the pending matchup, his response was predictable.

"Just perfect. Make my day. Let me circle the day on my calendar."

For a team that has been struggling on the road, the thought of Clemens, and what projects to be a very loud and excited crowd, is not one of the things on the Twins' wish list. However, after thinking it over a bit more, Gardenhire became more philosophical.

"It's beautiful. We owe him, and we're due."

One thing's for certain though, Gardenhire and the team can expect a lot of ticket requests from friends and family.

Down on the farm: J.D. Durbin turned in another impressive performance for the Rochester Red Wings on Tuesday night, giving up only three hits and no runs over eight innings. Unfortunately for Durbin, the game was scoreless when he left, and the Red Wings eventually won, 5-0. For the season, Durbin is 3-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 56 2/3 innings of work.

On deck: The Twins open up a four-game series Thursday evening in Oakland. Young right-hander Boof Bonser will face off against A's ace Barry Zito in a 9:05 CT start.

Joe Mauer has been wearing an old-style helmet when he catches Twins pitchers during home games. His backup, Mike Redmond, wears a similar helmet when he catches at the Metrodome. The helmets resemble those worn by the Twins during the 1970s.

BS What's with the throwback helmet?

JM We've only had it a couple of weeks. We just thought it was pretty cool, me and Redmond. We were just talking about it one day. Our equipment manager said, "We can get that done." We told Tony Oliva, "We want to get a helmet like you used to wear."

BS Is it a new helmet, or did you actually dig up a helmet from the '70s?

JM It's a new helmet; we just had it painted. The guy that painted it paints the Wild goalie masks. I think it looks pretty cool with the home uniforms.

BS Why don't you wear it on the road?

JM We just wear a regular helmet on the road. We're trying to figure out if we can get a road helmet like that. That'd be kind of cool. We'll take it slow and see how this helmet goes. So far, it's been going pretty good.

BS Did you have the helmet you were wearing painted or is this a brand-new helmet?

JM I use the one I used earlier in the year on the road.

BS Other players only have to worry about a bat and a glove. Catchers have bats, gloves, helmets, shin guards and all that other protective gear. Is any of that throwback gear? Are you still wearing anything you wore in the minor leagues or even high school?

JM No. When you catch every day, you have to switch things frequently. I've already been through two sets of catcher's gear this season. During the season, I'll go through seven or eight sets of gear.

BS You can't get superstitious about your gear, can you?

JM Well, you can, but I don't really get superstitious.

BS What do you do with the gear when you're done with it?

JM I give it away, or it's auctioned off for charity.

BS Enough about baseball. Are the sideburns here to stay?

JM For now, I guess.

BS Any plans to add a beard?

JM I had a beard in the offseason, but it didn't look too good. I just messed around for a week or so down in Fort Myers where nobody would see me.

BS Didn't like it?

JM I had a chinstrap beard and a mustache. It looked kind of funny.

BS Are you still Minnesota's most eligible bachelor?

JM I'm still single. I'm dating.

BS I notice you have a note in your locker that says, "Teresa's tickets." Why do you need a note to remember to get your mother tickets to the game?

JM It's just a reminder. I've never forgotten Mom and Dad. I've forgotten a couple of buddies, which is bad. But Mom and Dad and Gram are regulars. They come to pretty much every home game.

Yeah, I don't allow himto say anything bad about the Twins (he's a mariner's fan) and he pretty much follows that rule.

So anyways, the game was awesome. We got there 3 hours before it started and got to watch everyone at batting practice and warm-up. It's was great. They lost 3-4 in the 11th inning, but the game was definitely a good one. Joe played well as did the rest of the team.

I can't wait til next year when they are back out here!!!!!

Gardenhire would have preferred to give Joe Mauer the day off Sunday, a
day game after a night game leading into a 10-game road trip. Mauer also
was sore after fouling a pitch off his foot Saturday.

But the hot-hitting Mauer had to be in the lineup, Gardenhire said, so he
made the rare decision to start both of his catchers, using Mauer as the
designated hitter and Mike Redmond behind the plate.

"You put (Mauer) in there and you get nervous about it, but he's just
swinging so good," Gardenhire said. "It seems like he's on everything.
This guy has a chance to win batting titles; that's how good of a swing he
has."

Mauer is a candidate for American League player of the month. After going
3 for 4 with a double Sunday, he is batting .375 in May. He is riding a
seven-game hitting streak, during which he has batted .516 (16 for 31)
with two homers and six runs batted in.

pictures that I put in that folder, you can put on the site and what
not!!!

The folder is empty right now as I am not on my computer. I am on my

Jake and Rachel (his fiancee) showed up at the game tonight for fireworks.
  I was sitting with Tom Resop, who is the coach of the Baron Collier High
School Softball Cougers and the walked in and Tom said "Oh My God, is that
Mauer talking to Terry Ryan?  What's he doing here?"  I glanced over my
shoulder, caught more of glimpse of Rachel than Jake and said "That's
Jakie. He lives here."

"Oh.  What's he doing now. Nothing?"

"Coaching Gulf Coast League."

"That's what I said, nothing.  He doesn't even have a tan."

I sigh.  "Didn't your son play Gulf Coast League?"  This earns a long
drawn out response and finally I reply with "That's nothing, right?"

"You sweat your royals off playing in that league."

"That's why it's called the Gulf Roast League."

He's not heard that before, which got a laugh.

Anyway, I went for a bathroom break and another beer and stopped by to
talk to Jake on the way.

"You gave Tom a scare there, he though you were your brother."

"People do that all the time," Jake says.

"I can't imagine why," I say. "You're much more handsome."

"That what I think!" Jake says.

"Anyway, I'll see you Sunday and Monday," I say.  "Marty wanted to do
something with...Me...Me-Mauer-i-al--I can't even say it right."

He laughed.

"But Terry Ryan is here so we have to behave ourselves."

"Yeah," he agrees.

We chat for a little while, I finally tell him if I get kicked out of the
seats in front of Tom, I'm coming to sit with him and then if I got kicked
out of there I was going to sit with Jim Rantz as a last resort.  "Well,"
he says, "at least I'm not the last resort."

"I just want to know though...how did you get 'Jake' out of 'Donald
Charles'?"

"I didn't have a choice.  I was the oldest. I'm Jake the third."

Which is what I thought.  Because I've alternately seen him called Jake
Jr.

I finally get back to Tom -- who BTW is being named best area softball
coach for Southwest Florida -- and he says "It took you 45-minutes to get
that beer."

"I stopped to talk to Jake," I say in my defense.  "I didn't realize it
was a timed event."

"Right," Tom says.

"I only sit here for the abuse," I point out.

Notes: Mauer's bat heats up

Cuddyer sets career high Saturday; Lohse looks good in Minors

MILWAUKEE -- Not so long ago, the news that Joe Mauer was catching a day game following a night game might have drawn headlines in Minnesota.

But with his knee worries behind him, the focus instead is on his strong offensive production.

It's not a surprise that manager Ron Gardenhire wanted to keep Mauer's bat in the lineup Sunday. During the first two games against the Brewers, Mauer was 7-for-10 with four RBIs.

Mauer's performance in Milwaukee is just part of a recent hot streak at the plate. In his last 14 games, Mauer is hitting .404 (21-for-52) with two home runs, 12 RBIs and 11 runs scored.

"You know, I'm just seeing the ball well," Mauer said. "I'm playing pretty good and I don't want to change too many things. I want to keep it going."

It's not the first time Mauer has played a day game following a night contest this year, as he did the same during the Yankees series back on April 14-16.

In that situation, like this one, the Twins had an off-day following the series, which helped in the decision process. The Twins have two off-days this week, one on Monday and another Thursday, and Mauer knows that if that weren't the case, his chances of playing might be slim.

"If we had a full week of games, I don't know if I would be playing today," Mauer said.

Using his catcher in back-to-back days is not something Gardenhire likes to do often, but with Mauer's hot streak and rookie Boof Bonser getting the start on Sunday, it seemed like the perfect fit.

"We're trying to sweep a series here, so put him out there and he'll be fine," Gardenhire said. "I wouldn't have a problem if it were [backup catcher Mike Redmond] either, but with the way Joe's swinging, shoot, keep him in there."

New level of comfort: Another hitter who has been on a roll for the Twins is outfielder Michael Cuddyer.

Cuddyer set a career high in RBIs with five in Saturday night's game, and Cuddyer has reached base in 20 straight games.

It's the type of performance that has long been expected of Cuddyer, but one that hasn't come until his newfound stability in right field. When he played third base last season, where he was less comfortable defensively than in the outfield, his offensive statistics weren't as strong. Gardenhire believes there may be a connection there.

"Third base is a tough position to play and when you're putting so much pressure on yourself defensively to get the job done, it wears on you," Gardenhire said. "I knew when I played shortstop, that was a day where I couldn't bobble a ball. When I went over to second, I would relax because I knew I could do the old Ron Gardenhire thing and knock it down and still throw him out. So I do know that feeling and I think Mike's really relaxed out there in right field right now."

Franchise player: After having already been given the nickname "Franchise" by some of his teammates, it didn't come as much of a shock for Francisco Liriano that he was the subject of some new ballpark chiding on Sunday morning.

Redmond joked around with Liriano about whether he had received a call shortly after the decision for the new stadium came down around 5 a.m. that morning. Why would Liriano receive such a call? Well, to ask his opinion on the specs for his locker in the new clubhouse, of course.

"Did you tell them where you wanted your new locker to be, and that you wanted three in a row like [Barry] Bonds?" Redmond said with a laugh.

That new locker (or set of lockers) will be ready for the 22-year-old pitcher when the park opens in 2010.

Good sight: Kyle Lohse's outing for Triple-A Rochester on Saturday night was followed closely by the Twins staff.

So to see the line where Lohse gave up just one run on four hits over his complete game, seven-inning outing was definitely a piece of good news.

"That's exciting," Gardenhire said. "He went down there in what was not an easy situation, a cold night in Ottawa. He flew in and took the ball in the first game of the doubleheader and got it done. They said he pitched inside and controlled the game."

It was especially pleasing for the skipper to see the performance after all the negativity that plagued the move. There was no question that Lohse took the demotion hard, but for Gardenhire, the good performance showed that he put all that behind him.

"What it's all about is going down there and forgetting about everything that's happened -- getting sent out and all the negatives -- and putting forth the positive 'I'm going to get this done and get back to the big leagues' [attitude]," Gardenhire said. "If it's an 'I'll prove them wrong' type of attitude, that's even better."

Down on the farm: The Twins' Minor League Player of the Week is Class A Beloit first baseman Erik Lis. The Twins' ninth-round draft pick in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, Lis hit .464 in seven games with three doubles, a home run and eight RBIs over the week.

Through 35 games this season, Lis is hitting .350 with 16 doubles, six home runs and 27 RBIs. Lis leads the Snappers in average, hits, doubles, home runs and RBIs.

Coming up: The Twins head home for an off-day on Monday before a quick two-game series with their division rival, the Cleveland Indians. Johan Santana will get the start for the Twins on Tuesday in a 7:05 p.m. CT start against fellow southpaw Cliff Lee.
