1. Critical Mass bike ride reminder
This month's CM ride is this Friday 31 May 2002.
CM REMINDER: Fri., 31 May 1pm. Meet in front of the HaMashbir in the city center. Critical Mass, last Friday of the month demonstration for cyclists' rights. Bring the kids. Ride single file. 2. Two summaries of Jerusalem Day Bike Ride (Hebrew -- attached)
On Friday 10 May 2002, to celebrate Jerusalem Day, we joined with the children of the Phillip Leon Community Center in Kiryat Yovel, and many other Jerusalem riders, for a great ride around the area, through Moshavim Ora and Amminidav, and the Kennedy Memorial. Our bike club helped not only with many riders, but also by getting funding for providing 50 rented bikes for the kids to ride. Beautiful weather and great family and expert rider routes.
See the attached Hebrew files for more detailed descriptions.
3. Watch out for opening doors
Cyclists! When riding in the road (right side, right lane, I hope), always keep an eye on the parked cars. They may be starting up suddenly, or they may just be opening a driver-side door. They're not watching -- you watch so you and the door don't collide.
Now what I learned recently is that even if you're riding right next to the curb, there are still doors to watch out for. A car may open a sidewalk-side door to let off a passenger. Those doors hurt too.
Of course, when you're driving (bicyclists do drive sometimes) have an extra thought for bicyclists: look before opening any car door. Both for your own safety and that of any cyclists passing by.
Enjoy your riding, safely. (P.S. It's up to you, but I have to say "and wear your bike helmet.")

Jerusalem day ride Friday 10 May 2002
(See attached for Hebrew announcement)
A bicycle ride to celebrate Jerusalem day!
The ride is being organised by the Phillip Leon Centre (Matnas) together with us, Jerusalem for Bicycles, and the Department of Sport of the Jerusalem municipality.
The ride promises to be a big event with many participants. The city is advertising it widely and we are participating by providing 50 bicyles to children who can't afford bicycles. Our idea is to encourage cycling. This has been made possible by a donation we recieved from a fund in honour of Paul Isaacs. The donation was made via the PEF, Israel Endowment Fund. We are very pleased to be able to do this for kids who want to ride but who can't afford their own bicycle. The kids are chosen by Erez of the Phillip Leon Matnas (centre for extramural activities)
Security will be provided by the local police. The cyclists will be escourted by police to control traffic and a service to repair bicycles en route. Every precaution will be taken to make the ride safe and enjoyable for everyone. The KKL (Jewish National fund) will provide forest escourts and explanation at the Kennedy memorial.
Another goal of the ride is to make the citizens of Jerusalem aware of the beauty of the forest and the close proximity of the forest to the neighborhoods.
When: Starting at 1330 and finishing at 1600
Where: Starting from Phillip Leon Matnas (Neighborhood centre for extramural activities) #8 Chile Street, Jerusalem. Just behind the Monster ("Mifletzet") park in Kiryat Yovel.
Short family route: 7 Km. Phillip Leon Center (Henrietta Szold) - Moshav Ora and Aminadav - Kennedy Memorial and back to the Phillip Leon center.
Longer ride: 9.5 Km Phillip Leon Centre (Henrietta Szold) - Ora junction - detour road to the Kennedy Memorial and back to return to Phillip Leon Center.
Extension for expert riders: Additional ride from Kennedy Memorial into the forest
There will be a break for refreshments and for an explanation of the memorial and forest.
Those interested can hire bicycles. There is a limited supply so please register beforehand. (If you have your own bicycle you don’t need to register.)
Bike helmet required.

1. Critical Mass bike ride reminder and message from the Chairman
This month's CM ride is this Friday 29 March 2002.
CM REMINDER: Fri., 29 Mar 1pm. Meet in front of the HaMashbir in the city
center. Critical Mass, last Friday of the month demonstration for cyclists'
rights. Bring the kids. Ride single file. We don't disturb the traffic. We
are the traffic. We will be polite to everyone including motorists. Come

Further CM questions? Call Leon (053) 801-867.
Remember we have a CM on Friday. I think that the issue of the bomb in
K.George str. should be a strong reason for cyclists to make a deliberate
full scale appearance on Friday.
I would also like to suggest that our association can play a small part in
doing rounds on our bicycles in the centre of town. We could have a kind of
rough roster that will ensure one or two of our members in town at any given
time. With all due respect to the police I think that we can make an
important contribution by being extra pairs of eyes in the centre of town.
If someone wants to carry a weapon I say good for him. Still, I personally
don't know how to use one and don't think that this should be a criterion
for our patrols. Either way, I think that everybody who is interested in
this campaign should just go ahead and do it.
If a person is interested, s/he would just decide on a day and time to
devote to patroling K.George, Jaffa, Ben Yehudah, Mahane Yehudah. If you
like, let me know the time you've chosen and I would try to get volunteers
to fill in the gaps. Each one would choose his/her own time and place. I
would like to see us keep a rough coordination and just do it. We are
citizens and can do our duty like any good citizen of any decent city in the
world that is threatened by these kind of people. I will try to get the
police to give us a lecture some day on what we should look for and how we
should act if we find anything suspicious.
Have a good day. See you. Leon.
2. Update on projects: status at City Hall and the Ministry of
Transportation
Here's an update from our coordinator for contacts with city government,
Ohad Greiner. (Hebrew version attached.)
Greetings to all the members !
The difficult situation the country is in takes its toll on all of us and on
our organization. There have been fewer participants at Critical Mass rides
and similarly at other activities, but in spite of everything, the
activities continue as usual for all who wish to participate.
Bike Route around Jerusalem
Budget cuts in the city threaten to delay construction of additional bicyle
routes that we have been promised, particularly the plan for the circular
route around Jerusalem. That path is to begin at the Central Bus Station and
run via Gan Sacher, Valley of the Cross, Talpiot, Baka, Downtown, and back
to the bus station. This route, most of which can be arranged immediately
via wide sidewalks and open public spaces without the need to ride in the
street (according to Ministry of Transportation guidelines), had been
approved by the appropriate parties and only budgetary constraints had stood
in the way. Recently, those budgetary constraints, which themselves had been
removed, have been raised again. City Councillor Yossi Talgan, a strong
supporter of Jerusalem for Bicycles, has once again been pressed into
service and we hope that with his help we will be able to start moving the
bike path plan forward toward quick construction.
Bike Racks on Buses
The project for bike racks on buses has been halted by the Ministry of
Transportation which refuses to go forward with the trial, even given that
we succeeded in finding a private company which agreed to rent them for the
project. In light of this unexpected interruption in the project at this
stage, with no expectation that the situation will change, we were forced to
return the NIS 20 000 grant that we got from the Ford Foundation. Our
appeal, in February of this year, to the Minister of Transportation for
intervention on behalf of the project, has yet to generate a response, but
it doesn't seem that there is much reason for optimism.
Bike Racks (parking) around the City
In light of the many appeals from members, we gathered and organized the
requests for centrally located bicycle parking racks, and turned to the City
with a detailed proposal including specific locations, recommendations for
type of rack, cost estimates -- in short, everything needed for quick
implementation. Unfortunately, as of this writing, there is no serious
movement on this issue either. Perhaps if every one of those lion statues
around town were exchanged for a multi-bike bike rack, we would have a
perfect city-wide bicycle parking system.
Light Rail
In the area of cooperation with the Light Rail system construction, no news,
except that they have so much unexpected opposition that the construction
may be delayed through 2008, giving us more time to get our changes into the
plans (to better include bicycles).
Hoping that soon we'll see better days,
Ohad
3. We need your bicycle pictures
Send pictures to our e-mail address so that Dan can get them on the Website.
We need your bicycle pictures.
4. Send in those "Successful Struggle" entries
Leon also writes:
Please remind our members of the competition to see who can bring about
improvements in riding conditions in the city. We will give a prize at the
end of the year at our annual general meeting to the one who has brought
about the most impressive improvement. Some possible topics:
Bicycle parking at the Central bus station
Getting the municipality, Egged and the ministry of transport to allow
bicycle carriers to be fitted to certain busses coming into town from
distant suburbs, like Mevaseret.Pisgat Zeev, Gilo etc.
The Ford Foundation gave us a grant of $4000 to implement this plan. We had
to return the money to the Ford Foundation until such time as we can show
that we have approval to put the plan into effect. It's a great idea. The
one who gets this done deserves a prize.
Extending the bicycle path. At the moment the bicycle path only goes,
approximately, from the central bus station to Tzomet Pat. We want it to
continue to the Canion and to the Zoo and on to Talpiot via the railway
line. (See map on the amuta website)

Critical Mass Ride this week for February
In this mailing:
1. Critical Mass bike ride reminder and message from the Chairman
2. Group rides organised by the Amuta: an update
3. Send in those "Successful Struggle" entries
4. Past announcements are on the web
Note: All rides currently advertised by the Amuta in our newsletter or on
the Internet are only suggestions. The Amuta takes no responsibility for
these rides or their participants. People come and ride spontaneously. (See
“Group rides organised by the Amuta” below for more information.)
1. Critical Mass bike ride reminder and message from the Chairman
February is a short month, so the CM ride comes this week on 22 Feb. See you
there!
CM REMINDER: Fri., 22 Feb 1pm. Meet in front of the HaMashbir in the city
center. Critical Mass, last Friday of the month demonstration for cyclists'
rights. Bring the kids. Ride single file. We don't disturb the traffic. We
are the traffic. We will be polite to everyone including motorists. Come
early and get sign for your bicycles 1/2-hour before the CM.
Further CM questions? Call Leon (053) 801-867.
Critical Mass means the mass that makes the difference. I would like to tell
the few disappointed riders who came to the CM on the last Friday in January
that they shouldn't be disappointed. Struggling for a worthwhile cause or
struggling for a cause that you think is worthwhile can never be
disappointing. If we achieve the objective of our struggle would we still be
disappointed?
Say if the City council completed the building of the path and it was
crowded with riders, and the city streets were full of cyclist, would we
stop being disappointed? Would we then sit back and say our job is done?
The answer is a resounding “No”. We will never stop fighting to improve the
environmental conditions in which we live. There will always be better
conditions to achieve and more people to convince of the worthwhilness of a
clean, healthy environment.
The struggle is a goal in itself. The only disappointment we can feel is
that there aren't more people who feel the way we do about the environment
and about the part the bicycle has to play in the better environment. The
concept of struggle is by its nature a thing that the few do. If it were
something that the many do it wouldn't be called "struggle".
The struggle is double:
1) to get more people to struggle and
2) to achieve the thing we're struggling for: the bicycle path.
Wishing you a good day. Your chairman, Leon Gork.
2. Group rides not yet organised by the Amuta: an update
Problems have arisen with plans to start officially organised rides because
of the requirement that would arise: to insure the riders against injury, so
that no rider will come to the Amuta with a claim. We will have to solve
this problem once and for all before we can organise riding activities.
I suggested a wonderful activity for youth. This was a programme together
with the Matnas at Kiryat Yovel to teach children safe riding habits.
Unfortunately without insurance the programme would not be able to function.
It's vital to teach kids these riding habits. They will be safer on the
roads even when they later begin to drive motor cars, but the programme is
stuck on the issue of insurance. We have wonderful people who are planning
the course and we are working on the insurance aspect. As soon as we have
solved that problem we'll organise rides.
All rides currently advertised by the Amuta in our newsletter or on the
Internet are only suggestions. The Amuta takes no responsibility for these
rides or their participants. People come and ride spontaneously.
Wishing you a good day. Your chairman, Leon Gork.
3. Send in those "Successful Struggle" entries
Leon also writes,
P.S. I'm still waiting for letter about what you've achieved, in the way of
fixing bad cycling conditions, by writing or demonstrating to the City
Council. So far we've only had a letter from David Beninga about a great
achievement in getting a sidewalk repaired also a great achievement by Tom.
Tell me about a successful struggle you’ve undertaken. So far either Tom or
David will have to get the prize.
All entries to be sent to "Successful Struggle" at
e-mail: jbike@...
or post to: Jerusalem for Bicycles, P.O. Box 8294, Jerusalem 91082
4. Past announcements are on the web

Green Week 8/1 to 11/1 2002
Our Amuta is going to start 2002 in a big way. In cooperation with Megama
Yeruka we are going to have a stand at the Hebrew University Mt. Scopus
campus on Green Day Tues 8 Jan 2002 to inaugurate Green Week. And we will
have a special Critical Mass in combination with Megama Yeruka on Friday 11
January.
We need _you_ to help make it big !

Details
1. Green Day Information Table Tuesday 8 Jan 2002
Jerusalem for Bicycles, in cooperation with "Megama Yeruka" will have an
information table about bicycles on Tuesday 8 Jan 2002 at the Forum at the
Hebrew University Mt. Scopus campus. At the table, we will be distributing
information about the bike path that we're lobbying for the city to build,
called "Sobu Zion b'Ofnayim" or "Go 'Round Jerusalem by Bicyle".
Information on recommended bike paths from the Keren Kayemet will be
distributed too.
You'll also be able to buy "Jerusalem for Bicycles" t-shirts. Free whistles
and balloons. And of course there will be stickers and signs for bikes.
People will be able to sign up to become members of Jerusalem for Bicycles.
We hope to see a big crowd there at the information table. Hours: 10:00 AM -
4:30 PM.
2. Special Critical Mass Ride Friday 11 Jan 2002
In addition to the regular CM rides (last Friday of every month, HaMashbir 1
PM), there will be a special CM ride as part of the Green Week. This special
CM ride on Friday 11 Jan 2002 will also start from HaMashbir at 1 PM. The
ride will be about 3/4 hour around the center of town. The goal of the ride
is to draw the public's attention to the difficult situation for biking
without a marked, safe bike path around the city. A bike path that doesn't
disturb the traffic, and which contributes to reducing pollution by
encouraging bicycling.
This will be a special CM in more ways than one. Firstly it's in addition to
our usual CM on the last Friday of the month. Secondly and most importantly
we plan to have at least 100 cyclists at the Mashbir square at 1300 hrs on
the 11th Jan. Megama Yeruka is going all out to advertise this and so are
we. Our motto is "We aren't against the traffic = We are part of the
traffic."

able to park there, and who would use it. We'll collate a list and bring it
to the Iriya (City Hall).
Also if there are road, path, or sidewalk locations in need of repair for
safe cycling, send those and we'll make a separate list.
Best format for submissions in in Hebrew, in a MS-Word or Dagesh2 file saved

It's just gotten easier. The new address is:

2. Invitation to all cyclists to contribute to the newsletter
Shalom everyone. Riding our bicycles we've all come across hazards that
endanger the cycling public. Some of you have taken action, like Tom Harris
who had a problem with an unfinished and dangerous sidewalk in the Har
Hotzvim area. He got hold of the Iriya and kept on nagging them until they
fixed it. I'm sure there are many stories like that. We would like to hear
them. Share those success or God forbid failure stories with all of us. To
encourage you to write in your stories we will give a prize to the best
story. Let's make December success or failure story time for safe cycling.
The topic is: "How I got a hazard fixed up."
Or, "How in spite of all my efforts I didn't get a cycling hazard fixed up."
Send your stories to: jbike@...
Have a great day. See you. Your chairman. Leon Gork.

Dear Jerusalem bicyclists,
This Hanukkah edition of the Jerusalem for Bicycles
newsletter announces recent events and achievements.
Also, a membership letter (with some notes and
statistics of interest) is attached for you to join or
renew your membership in the Amuta.
Alternate language versions of newsletter and
announcements are not always available when this

English, or has any questions, please contact the
Amuta and we'll be happy to provide.
Remember, the Amuta's phone number is: 02 5401641.
Your Amuta can only help to serve your interests if
you help by paricipating in our activities, such as
the Critical Mass ride (last Friday of every month)
and Hannukah ride (Tuesday 11 Dec 2001).
Finally, I look forward to hearing from you. Your
suggestions are very valuable.
Have a great day. See you on your bicycle.
Yours sincerely,
Leon Gork

1. Hanukkah Ride Reminder
When:
Tuesday 11 Dec 2001 (2nd day of Hanukkah, Kaf-Vav
Kislev) starting at 10 AM.
Where:
Starting at main entrance of Gan Sacher, approx. 1 1/4
hours each way with a break in the middle for picnic.
About 4 hours total.
To where:
Gan Sacher, Emek HaMatsleva, Zoo at Malcha, Ein Lavan.
Stop for picnic and then return by same route.
Free event, with no need to sign up beforehand. For
kids too (from age 7 and up) and the whole family !
Participation is the exclusive responsibility of each
rider.
For further details call 02 540 1641.
2. Grant from the Ford Foundation
Your Amuta is very pleased to advise you that we have
received a grant of $4000 from the Ford Foundation.
The importance of this grant isn't only its monetary
value but the prestige that the Ford Foundation has
attributed to the Amuta. This prestige is based on the
work that the Amuta has done in the 6 years of its
existence in promoting the interests of cyclists and
encouraging the preservation of a healthy environment.
The Ford Foundation also emphasised the important
contribution your Amuta has made in promoting the
combined use of motorised transport with the bicycle.
This combination is expressed in our suggestion to
them of equiping buses with bicycle carriers, thereby
allowing commutors to use the bus to travel long
distances from their homes to work, usually in the
centre of town, and having the possibility of bringing
their bicycles into town for use during the day in
town. This will mean less use of motorised traffic in
the difficult congested areas of the town while using
the motorised traffic to cover the long distances to
get into town. The success of this plan, however,
depends on Egged agreeing to attach bicycle carriers
to buses and to the Ministry of Transport agreeing to
change the regulations to allow such attachment of
carriers to buses.
Members of the Amuta can help by writing to Egged and
to the Ministry of Transport to help make such
arrangements possible. In the meantime your Amuta will
continue to bring pressure on Egged and the
authorities to make bicycle carriers possible on
buses.
3. Meeting with City officials
Last week your committee and chairman had a very
fruitful discussion with Chico at the city's authority
for sport. We decided on a joint activity between the
Council for Sport, Chico, the Matnasim, the Keren
Kayemet and your Amuta to encourage pupils of the
various schools to participate in riding activities in
the paths of the Keren Kayemet forest around
Jerusalem. You will be hearing more of this project in
the news.
Part of the idea is to provide free or low cost
bicycle rental to school kids for a limited time of a
tour of one of the forests. We would like to hear of
anyone who might sponsor the bicycle hiring. This is
the main cost involved. It costs about IS30 per
bicycle. If we could get a sponsor to pay at least
IS20 per bicycle we will succeed in giving a lot of
kids the opportunity to ride under supervision in a
safe environment. Traffic will not be allowed while
the cycling activity is taking place.
4. Resignation of one Coordinator (Rakaz)
Avital, one of our coordinators, is resigning. We're
very sorry that Avital has other duties and feels she
cannot cope with the demands of the Amuta. We wish her
well in all her endeavors and thank her for the yeoman
work she put into the Amuta. We are very pleased that
Ohad continues his active interest in the Amuta even
though on a limited basis. We look forward to having
his valuable services with us for as long as he can
manage to do so.

6. Pavement success near Har Hotzvim
A story that shows that individual efforts can make a
difference. (How much more we can do working
together.) From Jerusalem for Bicycles member Tom
Harris.
"I work at Har Hotzvim and often ride my bike to work,
at least in the warm months. As Sderot Golda Meir is a
highway, and we have yet to achieve a bike path, I
would sometimes move to the sidewalk for my final
approach. Last spring, various maintenance work was
done on the sidewalks for Har Hotzvim, the cable TV
company, and the bus stop. I had hoped that a 40-meter
rocky section of sidewalk would be improved at the
same time. But it was not. Each company improved or
repaired only its own section, leaving the section
between Rehov HaRav BenZion HaAton and Rehov HaArtom
still unpaved. Difficult passage not only for
bicycles, but also for wheelchairs and strollers that
might approach the bus stop.
Starting with the City's 106 hotline, I reached the
City Beautification Deparatment ("Shefa" -- Shipur
Pnai HaIr), which promised to fix the sidewalk. As
telephone promises never seemed to be carried out, one
day, after weekly phone calls for several months, I
decided to drop by in person at City Hall. I locked my
bike outside and went in wearing my bike shorts and
with helmet and pump in hand. I found the head of the
department, who took me around the office to find some
work effort that could include fixing this stretch of
pavement. The supervisor of the city's Har Hotzvim /
Rehov HaArtom junction road works said that he would
have his budget right after Succot and would include
fixing the 40 meters of pavement. Lo and behold, in
the week right after Succot, a bulldozer appeared with
asphalt. We now have a continuously paved sidewalk
leading all the way to Har Hotzvim.
If you see sections of street or sidewalk that are
dangerous to bicyclists, report them to 106. If
progress is slow, and you would like to work together,
contact me, Tom Harris via e-mail at:
jmbicylist@...

JERUSALEM FOR BICYCLES
Registered Amuta # 6-613-028-58
"Our aim: to promote bicycling in Jerusalem"
Succot Jerusalem Bicycling Events
FOR HEBREW, see attached file which opens in MS-Word
or Dagesh2. (Use File |
Open, file type "All documents *.*")
1. The Jerusalem march
2. The Ramot environment happening
1. The Jerusalem March.
Our Amuta has been invited to participate, on our
bicycles, of course, in
this year's annual "Jerusalem March".
The march will take place on Thursday the 4th October.
Your committee has
given an undertaking that 50 cyclists will
participate. This is a great
challenge for our Amuta to show that cyclists in
Jerusalem speak with a
strong voice. We will be very visible. Each cyclist
will receive a T shirt
with the Amuta logo, signs to attach to bicycles,
balloons and a banner up
front. Of course we'll be a highlight riding while
everyone else will be
walking.
Please come early: 1200 PM. the march begins
officially at 12:45. The
gathering place will be at the Sachar park, at the
upper lawn, next to the
public toilets, in line with Bezalel str. The route
will be along Bezalel
str. to the city hall, where there will be
a platform. The finish will be at 14:30 in Ha emek
str.
For details please call the Amuta 02-540-1641. Leave a
message for Leon or
Avital.
2. The Ramot environmental happening
Our Amuta has been invited to have an information
stand at this happening.
Many people will be there and we will be able to give
information about the
progress on bicycle paths, bicycle parking facilities
in Jerusalem, bicycles
on trains and the proposed light railroad and other
activities in which our
Amuta is involved.
We need some volunteers to man the stand and give our
information. Naturally
we encourage you all to come and support this
environmental activity.
The happening will take place at the "Gan Ha kipod"
(porcupine garden -
there's a big stone porcupine in the middle of the
park)
The date: 7th October
Time: From 1300 to 1700 hrs.
How to get to "Gan Hakipod":
Address: Derech Hahoresh cor. Mishol Kitron.
Riding towards Ramot from the Junction Ramot French
Hill.
Take the first turn left.
Then take another first turn left.
That is Derech Hahoresh.
Carry on straight to the Bet Knesset. The garden is
behind the Bet Knesset.
Opposite the stores.
By bus: No. 32, 36 first stop in ramot. 10 minute
walk.

From Ohad (coordinator - liaison with city authorities):
Send responses to Avital at avi.tal@...
on where you'd like to see bike racks in Jerusalem.
Full Explanation
After meeting today with the municipality we decide to work together
to install more parking facilities all around the public places in
town that we think are needed. We will make a list of places like
matnasim, swimming pools, shops, bus stations or where ever you think
it is needed.
Please go over all the places you know and make a specific list of
places and send to coordinator Avital at avi.tal@.... (If
you can send these details as Hebrew Word .doc file attachments,
using Hebrew font David 12, it'll make compiling into a single list
easier and will be much appreciated.)
It is preferable that as many people as we can get make lists and
then we shall work according to the list with the environmental
department and "Mehandes Ha'Ir"
More comments on what else you want that the municipality can help,
for example a list of places with special road problems and holes or
whatever that needs to be fixed should be sent to Avital too and I'll
see to it as much as I can. Please give specific locations and what
needs to be fixed in detail.
Thanks very much !

Hi everyone !
Hope this listserv is working properly. Any problems, just let me
know. I'll try to send out another reminder after Yom Kippur, but
here's early notice to get those posters and leaflets. Your help with
this free advertising can make the CM ride bigger and better, and get
more familiar faces (like from your own neighborhoods) to come:
Pick up a poster to advertise the CM in your neighbourhood. Posters
will be available from Sunday at Tri Sport in Emek Refaim and from
Zvi Bicycles in Canyon Talpiot (Ahim Israel).
You can also (please do) get leaflets to hand out during the ride.
Leaflets available at Tri Sport in Emek Refaim and from Zvi Bicycles
in Canyon Talpiot (Ahim Israel), or call Leon (053) 801-867 or Avital
(02) 5874887.
The next Critical Mass bike ride itself:
