Anyone have a mens javelin they'd be willing to sell? I'd like to find
a 50m 800g jav without paying top dollar, but any range would be fine.
Let me know!
Thanks
sure is important . and all the lift and much too .

A 68 meter thrower would definitely get a scholarship.
As for the visa extension most of the time you could
get one for schooling that would last about 5 years. I
am a thrower from Utah and have thrown for Weber State
University which is Division 2 and i know some people
from Division 1. If you would like me too i could get
you in touch with some schools here in the states and
see what i could do for you. Reply back and i'll do
what i can for you.

Here's a site to visit if you need your spears rebuilt or worked on
for any reason. The guy really does amazing things with Javelins
headed for the recycle bin!

Hey DD, do you recognize this little ditty, which of course you sing:
Rootie Toot Toot, Rootie Toot Toot,
We are the Boys from the Institute,
We don't smoke, and we don't chew.
And we don't go with the girls that do.....
And we ain't got no Girrrrrrl Friends!
We'd have great fun at high school track meets where NMMI was competing by
singing that little song! And of course we would do it in a group and do it
loud enough so those from NMMI could hear! This was back in 1962. Glory Days!
ddsonnen <ddsonnen@...> wrote:
I also attended high school in New Mexico (NMMI) and was fortunate
to learn to throw when I was 16 years old. Five years later, I
finished my career in the 237' range. Now that I'm 38 and live in
Dallas, Texas, I have no clue as to where to purchase a javelin or
even where I could throw. (Can you tell that I'm a new member?)
Anyway, any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. As a side
note, when my track coach initially approached me about throwing a
javelin, he took me to a little kid's baseball game. He made me
watch how the little kids would throw from outfield into the cut-off
man or even to home. The lower body mechanics of throwing like a
little kid really influenced my technique. But the advice
previously posted is very appropriate; be careful what technique you
develop as it's hard to "relearn" something that could eventually
ruin your arm.

Not only a new member, I'm a high jumper and triple jumper. I have
just finished my first season in 25 years. My first question to the
group is, I can still throw a pro football 50+ yards. I have never
done the javelin. I live in Co. and have no availability to throw (
don't even have javelin yet). Can anyone give me an idea of what
distance I might be able to expect? Any masters throwers on this
site? Thanks Craig

Craig,
Nice jumping! I find it interesting that a significant number of us jock-types
seem to be wanting to learn to throw the javelin--I wish there were some here in
Utah. May have to travel your way to catch a meet!

Anupam,
Craig is correct. Once the "bursa"-the liquid-filled sack inside the elbow gets
irritated, throwing too soon will re-irritate it quite quickly, and it will be
worse. After the pain goes away initially, feel around for where it hurt
before--if you can press on the area and it still hurts, take more time off.
Meanwhile, when I am injured ( and that's often since I'm 51), I work on
footwork or impulse stride or crossover or whatever--it's still practice. Don't
worry, losing a little practice with your arm is better that chronic injury.

Thanks to all that posted. By the way I'm 47, 5'9" 150 lbs. My best 2
jumps for this season are on video clips on my blog at
http://dolphinfan133.tripod.com/craig/ or just google to Craigs
Jumping Journal.I also met Matt Hemingway, and there's a few photos
of us there also. They have Masters Throw meets at Fort Collins, Co.
I'd sure like to give it a try. I'll do my research. Craig (M47 HJ-

Craig,
Although a number of quarterbacks are also very accomplished javelin throwers
(Terry Bradshaw, Hall of Fame QB, for example), it is a slightly different
technique, so gauging javelin distance based on football distance isn't an exact
science. However, when I was throwing in college, I also played football, (and,
like you, high and triple jumped). I could throw a football a little over 50
yards. Consistently my javelin throws were over 190 feet. I want to make one
point though... javelin throwing is more technique than it is arm strength
(although arm strength does help). Best of luck.
John

Not only a new member, I'm a high jumper and triple jumper. I have
just finished my first season in 25 years. My first question to the
group is, I can still throw a pro football 50+ yards. I have never
done the javelin. I live in Co. and have no availability to throw (
don't even have javelin yet). Can anyone give me an idea of what
distance I might be able to expect? Any masters throwers on this
site? Thanks Craig

Fellow Travelers:
Let me revise my earlier remarks to Craig. As another earlier
response mentioned, the 50-yd football throw tells you you can throw
something farther than most mortals, and will eventually get the
javelin part down. Having just started, at 50, to learn and without
benefit of coaching, I am acutely conscious of avoiding injury.
Re getting a javelin, try Everything Track and Field, aka MF
Athletics. I've bought two spears from them, and regularly pick their
brains for advice (try "Matt" at the 800-number.
Good response about the little kids throwing. As a ski-school
supervisor that makes perfect sense. Kids have relatively little
upper-body strength prior to about twelve, so they have to throw with
their torso and legs. Great image. Unfortunately I'm here studying
MBA stuff, and you guys are just making me want to go outside and
throw spears before the snow falls here in Utah!!--- In
