Craig, I"m an M60 masters and just got back into T & F this past year too, and
am only throwing so far but hope to run this next season. I think you have
really good potential if you can toss a football that far. The technique for
the Javelin is considerably different than for the football, but you definitely
have an excellent arm. I'm an old baseball player and so far Ive just been
using my arm to throw the jav and am in the 135' range. I don't know your age
so I'm not sure what size (600 or 800 gram) javelin you'd throw.
A really good site for Javelin throwers is Klub Keihas. There is all kinds of
technical help and excellent links for training and exercises for learning how
to throw the Javelin.
As for your own javelin, I'd recommend you buy one ASAP. Gill makes a good,
fairly reasonabley priced one, but do some research first and try to throw some
before buying one. If you're willing to help your high school officiate in
their cross country meets, maybe the coach would allow you to throw one of the
school's javelins to give you an idea of what throwing one is like. I was lucky
in that respect here where I live in New Mexico. But with lawyers and lawsuits
facing everyone nowadays, who knows?
When you do start throwing, I suggest you just learn to stick it in the ground
about 5-10 yards in front of you and learn to throw it each time with your arm
straight back and extended. Better yet, go the the Klub Keihas site and roam
around in it. Do the garden hose exercises espoused by Tom Petranoff, work on
the approach steps he teaches too!
Mainly try not to get in bad habits early on!
Good Luck, and I hope to see you at some of our meets in New Mexico. Welcome
back!

Not only a new member, I'm a high jumper and triple jumper. I have
just finished my first season in 25 years. My first question to the
group is, I can still throw a pro football 50+ yards. I have never
done the javelin. I live in Co. and have no availability to throw (
don't even have javelin yet). Can anyone give me an idea of what
distance I might be able to expect? Any masters throwers on this
site? Thanks Craig
