Does anyone recognize the team from this crca-1900 photograph of a
Japanese ball player with what looks like a `Westerner'. I'm thinking
it might be part of an early American college tour but I'm not sure.

Hi everyone:

      I was wondering if anyone knew if there was any disposition of the
rape case involving Chunichi Dragons third baseman Kazuyoshi Tatsunami.
The last I read, which was some time ago, a woman had sent a complaint
to the Nagoya prosecutor's office about the alleged incident
that involved her being drugged and raped at a hotel during the 2004
Japan Series and Tatsunami then calling on a friend who is a prominent
figure in an organized crime group to try to make it go away. Tatsunami
himself has denied that he has done anything wrong.

      The Dragons themselves are positioning it as a "private matter" and
basically don't want to get involved, which doesn't say much for the
ethics of that team.

      Moreover, while this is unreliable, I undestand that there may be
other rape victims of Tatsunami, though that comes off of sites like
2Channel, which isn't credible enough to lend any credence to. It is
true that he is a notorious womanizer and was recently linked to an
affair with tarento Anna Umemiya. But does that affinity for the babes
extend to rape?

A Look at Japan's WBC Roster

Chiba Lotte manager Bobby Valentine publicly challenged the Chicago
White Sox just days after winning the Japan Series, stating that his
club could possibly defeat the Major League champions in a seven-game
series.

No one listened.

Now, with the inaugural World Baseball Classic a little more than
four months away, all Valentine has to look forward to is seeing the
top Japanese players' face-off against the best America, and the rest
of the world for that matter, has to offer.

"It will be a very tough competition," said Japan World Baseball
Classic manager Sadaharu Oh. "The level of play will be very high and
there will be teams that want to beat us, so we know we have to go
with a strong team."

Oh unveiled the nation's 30-man roster for the tournament in early
December, with current major leaguers Ichiro Suzuki, Tadahito Iguchi
and Akinori Otsuka all selected to participate.

The wildcard remains however New York Yankees outfielder Hideki
Matsui, who has yet to decide if he will play.  However, Oh believes
the temptation to represent his country will be too much for Matsui
to ignore.

"I'm 100 percent sure he will join us," said Oh. "I spoke to him
recently and told him we really want him to be a part of our team."

If Matsui does participate, he will start in Oh's outfield along side
Ichiro and 2005 Pacific League batting champion Kazuhiro Wada.
Outfielders Tatsuhiko Kinjo (Yokohama), Hitoshi Tamura (Yokohama) and
Norichika Aoki (Yakult) were also selected by Oh to participate.

Meanwhile, Central League MVP and Hanshin standout Tomoaki Kanemoto,
who batted .327 while cracking 40 homers and 125 RBIs and Chunichi
right fielder Kosuke Fukudome were curiously passed over and not
selected.

Behind the plate, Oh wanted Kenji Johjima to perform catching duties
but the ex-Fukuoka catcher decided his time would be better spent
working with his new teammates in Seattle while sharpening his
English skills.

Therefore, Yomiuri catcher Shinnosuke Abe, who batted .300 with 26
homers and 86 RBIs, will start while Motonobu Tanishige (Chunichi)
and Tomoya Satozaki (Lotte) add depth to the position.

Michihiro Ogasawara (.282, 37 HR, 92 RBIs) and Nobuhijo Matsunaka
(.315, 46 HR, 121 RBIs) will likely alternate between first base and
the designated hitter position while Iguchi, a member of the World
Champion White Sox, will start at second base and work with either
Munenori Kawasaki (.271, 4 HR, 36 RBIs) or Toshiaki Imae (.310, 8 HR,
71 RBI) at shortstop.

Imae, the Japan Series MVP, batted .310 last season with eight
homeruns and 71 RBIs while Kawasaki, known more for his defensive
skills, hit .271 with four homeruns and 36 RBIs for the Hawks.

At third base, Yakult's Akinori Iwamura (.319, 30 HR, 102 RBI) looks
to be the probable choice to start for Oh's squad with Hiroshima's
Takahiro Arai (.305, 43 HR, 94 RBIs) the likely choice to perform
backup duties.

Oh's pitching staff will be led by Seibu Lions ace Daisuke
Matsuzaka.  The former first-round pick hurled 215 innings last
season and went 14-13 while finishing with a 2.30 ERA.  The flame
throwing righty has a varying repertoire of pitches, including a mid-
90s fastball, a slider and a nasty forkball.

Behind Matsuzaka is Yomiuri ace Koji Uehara (9-12, 3.32 ERA), Lotte
submariner Shunsuke Watanabe (15-4, 2.17 ERA), Hiroshima's Hiroki
Kuroda (15-12, 3.17 ERA) and Fukuoka's Toshiya Sugiuchi (18-4, 2.11
ERA) round out Oh's rotation.

Otsuka, Fukuoka's Kyuji Fujikawa (7-1, 1.37 ERA) and Yakult's
Hirotoshi Ishii (4-3, 37 Svs.) will helm Oh's bullpen which is
believed by some experts to be his best asset.

However, the talent selected by Oh may not be enough for Japan to
compete with the likes of the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Puerto
Rico and the United States.

"I'm not sure how far they are going to go in the tournament," said
Gary Garland, writer and founder of Japan Baseball Daily.  "But I
don't think they are going to win it all, that's for sure."

Japan will host Korea, Chinese Taipei and China when Pool A play
begins on March 3rd at the Tokyo Dome.

"If the Japanese team pulls off the upset and takes the tourney, it
will be for them what the Miracle on Ice was to the U.S. during the
Cold War," added Garland.

Fukudome's omission is odd but many Dragons players, following the lead
of their no-nonsense manager Hiromitsu Ochiai, have been cool to
anything that might distract them from the pennant race. Last year,
Ochiai snorted when asked what kind of fan service his players would
take part in, saying his only fan service was to win games.

Because the WBC's eligibility restrictions are fairly loose (Mike
Piazza will play for Italy because his name 'sounds Italian'), Kanemoto
could have played for Japan. He was born in Japan, after all. However,
his citizenship was perhaps an issue. This is not the case for
Fukudome, who has played for Japan in the Olympics.

Thanks for the kind words. Miyaji is a great guy and an easy interview.
At the time he was doing a lot of interviews for TV and so on and he
had all his stories down... I more or less just transcribed what he

being the Latins that they are, a few guys insisted I pass ahead of them in
the line so that Iīd be able to stand in the shade!) to buy tickets for the
season finale of the famous Leones here in Caracas. On the radio it is
constant "Alex Cabrera...Alex Cabrera". I didnīt have time to do my homework
and check with teams the players who play in Japan are with this winter, but
am hoping to see some familiar faces tonight, if not Cabrera. I love
attending ballgames in foreign countries!

who may not know, the Parallel League runs concurrently with the regular
league in Venezuela.  Some players participate in both leagues.  It's very
interesting.  I collect stats from both leagues.

Speaking of Venezuela, how about the proposal in today's paper to play
Group C there and have the semis and final in Canada.

(CARACAS, Venezuela -- Venezuela is proposing that part of next year's
World Baseball Classic be played in the baseball-crazed South American
nation rather than Puerto Rico so that Cuba is not excluded from the
tournament.)

Although it was a nice gesture, I can't believe Edwin Zerpa, president
of the government-run Venezuelan Baseball Federation, would think WBC
Inc. would take him seriously.  Especially after the fact that MLB
announced that nearly 60% of tickets for the semis and final have
already been sold.

Hi Gene,

Unfortunately I only have a limited amount of time here and are busy
backpacking, as Aussies are programmed to do! Iīve also enjoyed games in
Cuba and Nicaragua. In fact, I was extremely lucky to get back to Caracas
just in time for the final game here. It was a sensational game, not just
the excitement generated in the stands by the fired up fans, but the level
of play was terrific. I was reflecting on just how good the catcher was when
I realised it was Henry Blanco. Marco Scutaro and Luis Sojo were also on the
team, which trounced the visitors 16-3. Iīm afraid there is not really a
Japanese connection here...but next trip I shall certainly check with you
and others for more advice on what to go and see and appreciate!

Blanco and Scutaro were two of the better players in the Venezuela wqinter
league in 2004 also.  Blanco had a .321 average and Scutaro was at .335.
Sojo was down the line a bit with "only" a .305 average.  The league leaders
in batting average for 2004 were Juanmj Rivera at .402, Lino Connell at
.378, Jose Castillo at .364, and Eric Schumacher at .350.

In the Parallel League the leaders were Alex Nunez at .429, Martin Prado at
.382, Tony Gutierrez at .377, and Yilmer Arratia at .364.

I'm happy to see that you also follow baseball in Cuba and Nicaragua.  I
have extensive statistics from ALL of the Latin American leagues as well as
from the leagues in Asia (including, by the way, the Philippines),
Australia, and Europe.

So the owner of this forum doesn't get too upset, I'll add this Japanese
connection.  In what was billed as the 2003 World Cup, the Brazilian team,
which finished seventh out of eight teams, was comprised primarily of ethnic
Japanese players.  They were:  Anderson Muramatsu (3rd), Ediones Iriki
(Left), Estevao Sato (3rd), Leandro Hasegawa (Right), Marcelo Okuyama
(Short), Norberto Semanaka (1st), Reinaldo Sato (2nd), Renan Sato (1st),
Rodrigo Watanabe (Left), and Pitchers Fernando Oda, Gustavo Watanabe, Kleber
Tomita, Marcio Sakane, Carlos Yoshimura, Carlos Yamada and Rodrigo Hirota.
So, all but one of the pitchers and all but  four of the 13 position players
were ethnic Japanese.

      In between all the other stuff I've been doing for my site, I
cleared out all the outdated links and am beginning to add new ones and
hope to have it all finished by the end of the month.

Hi everybody:

      I just tried to access Rakuten's internet broadcast and it turns
out that they now want you to
register before you can watch it.

      Of course, it's all in Japanese, so those of you wiithout Japanese
reading ability are shit out of luck.

      Moreover, if that wasn't enough, if you don't have Japanese input
software you can't register since it won't take just roman letters for
your name. Therefore, non-Japanese baseball fans who were able to view
the games before with little trouble have now had a big barrier thrown
up in front of them. It is kind of a tacit, "no gaijin allowed" sign,
really.

      What are these idiots thinking? Moreover, the whole subscription
thing is a pain in the butt. Even if people were willing to register,
they are nuts if they give their real personal information. On the very
few that I have on the web I always lie bigtime and I don't think I'm
alone. That makes their information collection useless.

      I just want to scream when companies do dumb stuff like this.

I'm going to reveal some things about bat speed and hitting power that
you've likely never considered before.  These are concepts and
techniques I personally mastered during my playing career and now teach
to my players and students.  Because I have hit many a 90-plus mph
fastball, with a number of them landing well over 400 feet away, I know
what it takes to generate this kind of power.
Think about the game and its demands - just how strong do you really
have to be to play it well?  In baseball, the ball is 5 ounces and the

That's a pretty old file.  If you specify what exactly you're looking
for, I can see what I can come up with.  My data is pretty complete
starting from 2003.
