I have found this book *extremely* useful... Before I got ITBS, I herniated
a disc in my back as a result of playing racquetball aggressively and
shoveling snow a couple of days later. I was desperate with pain, unable to
walk (running was out of the question). Traditional physical therapy, based
on gentle flexion exercises, was ineffective. Then a friend mentioned Robin
McKenzie and the back extension exercises. Within a few days of doing these
exercises the pain went away.
My story is actually a bit longer, but I was so amazed by the results that I
felt compelled to create a web page to tell people about it:
http://home.att.net/~drt-3d/DrT/health/McKenzie.htm
Even though the book focuses on pain (neck and back), his ideas about proper
posture and proper back hygiene are very useful for everyone, even those who
have not (yet) experienced back pain.
By the way, running has never bothered my back...
