Maybe for some people (possibly the majority), but not for everyone
(including me). I got severe ITBS after my first marathon in 2004. I
managed to recover, ran another marathon in 2005, 2006, 2007. In 2007 I
added a 50K race. Last year I ran 3 marathons and 2 50K races.
I think I have put my body under plenty of stress, but ITB has not returned.
I do not do any special stretching or other treatment, and have not changed
anything really in my running style/form since 2004.
What I am trying to say is that it is possible to get ITB without any
bio-mechanical issues, just as a result of "overuse" and maybe another
external factor, like worn-out shoes.
