While I have not heard about pt causing itb, I can share my own experience. My
problem began in the fall while I was training for a marathon. I had gradually
worked up to 16 miles and then the pain was so bad I had to stop running pretty
much altogether for a couple of months. When I could stand it, i kept my cardio
up on the elliptical machine. At the same time I increased my mileage in
training, I had begun to use hip adductor and abductor machine at the gym. While
on vacation in February, I showed my husband a picture of where the itb was as
indicated on the side of one of these machines...based on our ownuneducated
theory, we though it was interesting that my pain started shortly after using
that machine. What I thought was strengthening my hips was actually hurting me.
I did have a deep tissue injury as a teenager, that bothered me through two
pregnancies, and apparently was aggravated by the use of the machine. I stopped
using that machine, and
doing any type of hip abductor/adductor strengthening; lo and behold, I am back
up to 10 miles and no pain. Slight tightness, but good stretching after each run
and throughout the day takes care of it. I have also made sure to keep up the
strengthening of my hamstrings and quads. Not medical science, but real life
experience....

Thanks, I do not have hip pain. My family doctor feels that the perceived knee
problem is because of my hip. She said that I had a hamstring strain/spain?
The ITB came about two weeks into PT. I am wondering if giving up on PT will
help it. Have any of you ever heard of ITBS happening because of PT?
I see the myofacsial massage person on Friday. I'll let you know what she has to
say about it.
