Hi Daniel.
I have a similar story. I can play Ice Hockey and bike etc without any pain or
problems. However when I hike I usually get tremendous pain after longer
periods of exertion, and like you usually on the downhills. I have been out in
the woods where I have lost almost complete mobility. My knee just didn't want
to bend. A visit to my orthopedic Dr. was pretty much useless, lose weight and
strengthen my knees was the prescription. I'm pretty fit so I'm sure weight
isn't the problem and I do work my leg muscles regularly. I have not found
anything that is a cure-all by any means. I'd be interested if you find
anything that seems to work for you.
And for the record if it was me... I don't think I would throw in the towel just
yet. There are others (runners) here that have had problems and then have gone
on to run marathons without pain. hang in there.
Jim

Subject: [itbs] New Injury
Hi,
Last night I got back from the three peaks challenge (where you climb
the 3 highest peaks in the UK in under 24 hours). Unfortunately I
could not continue after Ben Nevis because of my knees. About 3
months ago we did a test hike up Snowdon and coming down I was in
what I would class as major pain in my left knee mainly. The pain was
unbearable. Knowing I had 3 months left before the main challenge I
trained loads to get fit and build up the muscles. It wasn't until
last night that I found out about ITBS - so the question is, the
listed training for stopping ITBS if I begin this training later in
the year will I be able to complete the challenge next year without
causing problems or am I best to just forget about hiking. It is only
on the way down once the pain starts. Once it has kicked in there is
no down or up! Fitness wise I am good and do not suffer from this
playing squash or cycling. Last year I did a 200
mile rids across
Wales and no problems at all.
Is it worth another crack at the challenge or just call it a day?
If the advise is go for it again, any good resources for training?
Thanks very much,
Daniel
