ITB Tendonitis and contracture.......   Message List

Hi everyone -

I am new to the group and really need some advice. I have been in
constant pain for the past 2 1/2 years and finally after two needless
surgerys (an ovary removed and my appendix removed), seven months of
PT, chiropractic treatment, acupuncutre, massage, and an array of a
herbal and medical remedies come to find out I had a torn labrum in
my right hip. I also had a bump on my femoral neck (hip impingement)
and scar tissue on my labrum. I had arthroscopic surgery to correct
the hip problem six weeks ago. The surgeon had to cut away a lot of
bone including a triangular bone that had grown in response to my hip
being out of whack all that time.

Prior to surgery here is what my surgeon had diagnosed me with:

Hip flexion contracture
labral tear
FAI (hip impingement)
ITB tendonitis
ITB contracture
Coxa valga (the angle of my hip is 146 degrees it should be 120
setting me up for all kinds of problems when I had started running
several years ago. I now can never run again because of this
condition unless I want mess up my hip again)
Head/neck junction cyst
possible medial meniscus tear in the right knee

So I had surgery that repaired the labral tear, hip flexion
contracture, FAI, the cyst, syenovectomy. The surgeon didn't do
anything about my ITB stuff. The only symptoms I had of ITB
tendonitis prior to surgery was that my knee would hurt when I would
walk upstairs only after running and sometimes the outside of my
thigh would burn when I was laying down. Now it is like my ITB has
woken up and is on fire. From what I have gathered from my surgeon's
nurse is that people with ITB tendonitis have a longer recovery after
hip arthroscopy, others are better after a few days to a week. For
me they said I have a 12 to 16 week recovery period. Right now my
ITB feels VERY bruised. I have been using one of those vibrating
massagers on my ITB to try to loosen it up. I also had it massaged
and the masseuse cupped (an acupuncture technique) it to help bring
blood flow. I am doing some ITB stretching in my post op PT but not
a lot. The doctor basically has told me to stretch it and ice it.

What I am wondering, any recommendations? Has anyone felt that their
ITB pain might be causing low back pain? I know that sounds strange
but when I had it massaged it seemed to aggravate my low back pain
that has to do with my hip problem. It may just be coincidental.

Anyone have hip surgery or hip problems and then have ITB problems.
Could my ITB have basically stopped working and now it is waking up?

Any information would be greatly appreciated! I am so thankful for
this group!

Michelle
