The knots in my muscles got progressively worse
(making my ITBS worse) but things have gotten a lot
better with both ART and self-massage. Foam roller
for the side of the leg and butt (knots in the
piriformis) and use a tennis ball or massage stick for
calves/quads/anywhere you can find a knot. Get
creative :)

Also, a reminder that doing strengthing exercises can
exacerbate the problem when you have very tight
muscles. You need to work those knots out...and
stretching alone will not do so.
