I have the same experience as Ann -- I have consistent tightness and
"crankiness" in my hip, and unless I warm up and stretch the hip thoroughly
before exercise, I end up with outside-of-the-knee pain that is exactly what
ITBS suffers describe. I my case, I am convinced the hip and knee pain are
related.

Paul -- maybe the people defining it have never had it. Since the IT band
goes all the way up into the hip, if the band begins to hurt at the knee, a
person might feel it first in the hip. I do. If I stop & stretch at the hip,
I'm OK. If I don't, it becomes typical knee ITBS.

ITBS is defined as an overuse friction bursitis of the iliotibial band at
the level of the lateral epicondyle of the femur. Pain originating in the
hip or
mid-lateral thigh therefore is not ITBS.
