Yes, a tight IT band can hurt in the hip. In fact, when mine starts to tighten
up, that's where I feel it first. Two good ways to stretch it out at the hip:
1. Stand with the foot of the affected leg behind the other foot, toe to heel
so your feet make a V. Bend over sideways, straight over. This stretches the
IT band over the greater trochanter (your hip bone). For some people this is
easier if they stand a few feet away from a wall and lean the affect side into
the wall. Be sure you bend at the hip.
2. Same stance, only this time bend not straight over to the side, but a little
to the front. This moves the IT band in front of the greater trochanter. The
stretch feels really good to me.
If the stretch hurts, don't bend as far over. The IT band is really a tendon,
except at the very top, where it joins the tensor fascia lata, which may also be
contracted. Tendons aren't real amenable to stretching, so it may take some
time before you can get it to lengthen. I'm not saying this will cure ITBS, but
it sure helps me when mine starts up.
