Subject: Bag for a Dahon?

Anyone here has any creative solution for a bag to have a Dahon in? I
was thinking of something with a rigid bottom (preferrably - foldable
in two), soft sides, collapsible into a small package, with wheels and
a nice zipper that goes all the way down - so that it is easy to put
the Dahon in and take it out. Perhaps, there's place where once can
order such bags? How much would it cost then?

Thanks!

Hello all!

I have good news for you. "Rakevet Israel" gave up its restriction:
from now on (and this is official!) a folding bicycle is allowed on
the train - provided it is folded and covered. And for those who were
contemplating a Brompton - the "Bisicletta" shop, located at Ibn
Gvirol 173, Tel-Aviv, will be servicing them shortly.

To sweeten the pill, here are some better news: Brompton is back. A
shop named "Bicicletta", located at Ibn Gvirol 173, Tel-Aviv, is
taking over. It already provides service for Bromptons, and it will
soon start taking orders for spares and new bikes. Their site is:

http://www.groopy.co.il/sites/main.aspx?st=53

So, all we have to do now - is prevade over the "Rakevet Israel"
beaurocrats - and we're on the roll.

Hello, guys!

Actually, I already started to act. I wrote to a number of mass media
people that I happen to know, to the TAB"A society (that work in order
to make Tel-Aviv and other cities more bike-friendly) I also wrote to
same Mr. Yair Agmon, and I plan to write to a whole bunch of people in
Knesset, to Mr. Huldai etc. It is quite possible I will set up signing
campaign at some point - I will update you guys if so.

My name is guy zilbershtein and I'm a new owner of a pair of dahon
and a new member in this group.

In the last two weeks I'm taking the train to work from tel-aviv
(mercaz) to hod-hasharon. I was quite happy from this arrangment
until, like in your case, I was told that I'm not allowd to go up
with my folders.

I want to take part in the action against rakevet israel. I believe

please let me know if there is something we can do, maybe to arrange

Hi Dmitry and all

Well, haven't been here for a long time but I also have some stuff
to add on that

It was nice too to meet you too the other day on the way out of the
train (: After seeing you going out of the train with your
bikes "just like that" I really thought that everything is OK and
back to normal..
I wanted to make sure though, so on my way to the train I stopped at
the train manager and told him that I wasn't allowed in with folding
bikes few days before and wanted to know if its ok now .. (ovcourse
I didn't tell him that I've seen someone just going through...). For
my disappointment he repeated the same as I got last time - "folding
bikes are not allowed, even if they are inside a bag".. write a
letter to Nziv Pniyot Hazibur" he said ..

well, I did that.. I've sent a complaint about this stupid new
regulation to the email and fax of this yariv agmon .. it was sent
in the 10-th of January and except of automated reply I got NOTHING
yet..when I called his secretary few days ago to ask why I didn't
get any reply she could just tell me "send again". She claims that
she cant know the status of handling my complaint since the emails
and faxes go directly to yariv agmon.. Well what does she do there
all day I was asking myself..
I couldn't reach yariv agmon in the direct number which Shelly gave
but maybe I didn't try hard enough..

I also tried to send the story to the red email of Ynet but got
nothing..
I have few more ideas regarding sending this story to the media and
I also defiantly think we shouldn't give up here.

Last, during this period I tried my luck again.. I went into the
train in the tel aviv university station but from rokah' side
(usually I come from ramat aviv side). I closed my bag completely
and this time no one stopped me .. And in Haifa hof hakarmel station
(where I come back from work) - nobody seems to care..

So bottom line I think we should make some noise here and im willing
to take a part.. We are not such a big population (to say the least)
and we are not so miserable (I mean there are other sectors like
handicaps which are much more miserable in some cases) so, for my
opinion, the strongest argument we have here is simply the STUPIDITY
of this decision.. And nobody likes to look stupid ..

Below I attached the letter I sent by me to MR. yariv agmon and the
automated (and only) answer which I got till now

Tomorrow ill try my luck again with my bikes (what a thrill) - ill
update you..

10x

Ran

So, folks, as of today - this is official. I was shown out of the
station - and shown a directive, signed by Yossi Carmeli, "samankal
nos'im", stating that folding bikes are off limits - even when folded
and inside a bag.

But this is not over, by far. I will try to engage the media people,
and if need be - take "Rakevet Israel" to court - I don't think they
have the right to make such arbitrary decisions. I will keep you
posted. Wish me luck!

This comes at a worst of times - when I was actually almost ready to
announce, that Brompton service and import is about to resum.
Obviously, this poor decision by Rakevet Israel puts a large question
mark about all this.

This guy here somehow managed to get into troubles with the station
personnel - to the point that they followed after him anywhere.
Anyhow, he's got the strida. While I wouldn't trade my Brompton for it
(hell, I wouldn't trade it for anything), still it's a nice concept:

Just FYI: a few days ago I saw a Dahon Piccolo for sale in a bike shop
on Hashmonaim st. in Tel-Aviv (I don't know the name of the shop, but
it's the one closest to the Petach Tikwa road, or whatever it is
called now). Mind you, this particular model is not the best one by
Dahon (by a long way). It has smaller 16" wheels and it is quite
heavy. Still, something to consider.

Well, as I said last week, there is no problem (as of now) to go with
a folded (and covered) bike on a train. I went through the Tel-Aviv
University station 3 times this week - and everything was fine. Only
once did the security protest - but relented after a short MIRS talk
with the station manager. Apparently, they got some new instructions
that were misinterpreted somewhere along the chain of command, so this
must explain the problems Ran ran into last week. And speaking of Ran,
our list must have reached the critical mass (at 11 members) - and we
start bumping one into the other. In particular, while leaving the
aforementioned station this Monday (I think), I was called at by name,
and there Ran was :). Nice to have met, Ran!

Oh, and while at it, will you guys and gals care to tell who owns
which model of a folder (if any), and if not - whether you intend to
buy?

I ALWAYS fold them before the ticket office. Hell, I used to ride all
the way there (it's a long passage from the security to the tickets) -
till they told me to stop, and I obliged.

It was around 19:00 or so. And no, I did not ride there on Thu. It all
probably depends on the specific station manager. I passed there again
today (about an hour ago), but on the way out. I will be returning
this evening through that station, and we'll see again :).

Nonsence. As I said, this looks like a local initiative of an overly
zealous station manager.

I was told the direct phone number for Yariv Agmon is 03-6937955, and the
number of his secretary, Michal, is 03-6937901. (I didn't get him when I
called so I sent an e-mail.)

Hi Dmitry

Indeed its stranger to me now.. I had a look in the brompton site -
the bicycle look cool but they are not invisible for sure .. (:

Till now I usually was let into the train station area with the bikes
not folded and used to fold them next to the ticket office..
Sometimes they ask me to fold it before I pass the security guy/girl..

Since they have no reason to have anything specifically against me, I
really don't understand why they didn't let me pass and at the same
day - let u pass.. What time did you pass through / did you pass
through also on Thursday?
When they didn't let me in, I tried talking with the station manager
and he told me that the decision is final and applies for all train
stations etc..

Well, I think ill give it another try then.. Ill come with my bikes
already folded, inside the bag, and see what happens..

Are u going through tel aviv university every day? Maybe I just have
pass with you and im safe (:

ill let you know what happens

10x

This is really strange. That's the station where I get on the train
(Tel-Aviv - Universita) - and the last time I did it was yesterday -
noone gives me any trouble there with my Brompton. I don't even cover
it - unless asked to do so, with is rather rare occurance. Perhaps in
the meantime you can fold it outside the station and go in when it's
already in the bag.

Hi,

Shlomi Deutsch, who is the Dahon dealer in Israel, says he should have bikes
for sale to individuals in April. In addition, he might have a few spares
at the end of January. He can be reached at shlomido@... or at

Dear Hanan!

Last time I spoke with Ilan of "Ilan's bikes", he was going to shut
down the store and leave Israel for a duration. I guess, the fact that
his phone is disconnected means that he'd went through with his
decision. He planned to pass the exclusivity to someone else, but I'm
not sure that this indeed happened - so as of now, there's no Brompton
dealer in Israel. What can be done about this is that we can gather up
a certain number of orders and order Bromptons by ourselves. For just
one bike it will probably be easier for you to bring it from abroad.

As of Dahons, there is supposed to be a new dealer. His showroom is
located, if I'm not mistaken, somewhere near the Ramat Gan mall
(Renault agency, perhaps?) Shelli, who is also on this list, made the
inquiry and contacted the dealer. It was also about a month ago - and
the dealer was in the process of setting things up. So it's Brompton
out, Dahon in, I guess. I hope Shelli will update us as to whether
this dealer is all set by now.

That's about all, I guess. Welcome aboard!

hello Dmitry,
I had a montague folding bike for the last 4 years, and happily used
the train with it.
This was until it was stolen 2 days ago...
So - I've been wanting to replace it with a brompton since the summer ,
and now i'm gonna do it.
I've been trying to call Ilan's bikes, and the phone is not connected -
did he close the shop, or change a number ?
Where can i get a brompton here in Israel now?
and a Dahon - is there an importer now?

The first and foremost reason to buy a folding bike - is, obviously,
commuting. Here's how I get to work every day: I unfold my Brompton,
ride it to the railway station, fold it, take a train to "University"
in Tel-Aviv, unfold the Brompton - and ride it through the "Ganei
Yoshua" bicycle path all the way to Ramat Hahayal, where my office is
located.

So, how convenient it is to take a folder on a train? Quite
convenient, but there are some point to have in mind:
1. The security does not like large covered objects, so it's best to
fold the bike where they can see that it's a bike. Only then do you
cover it.
2. And cover it you do, because the station personnel sometimes (more
often than not) requires the bike to be covered - probably so that the
protruding parts don't get caught in other passenger's clothes.
3. The ticket checkers. There's a bit of a problem with those - since
they are quite high, and you have to strain your hands to get the bike
over them. Fortunately, my Brompton passes under those - people with
Dahon (20" wheels) will not enjoy this luxury.
4. Once on the train, the best place for your folder is between the
seats, where people sometimes put their luggage. Brompton fits there
nicely.
5. The curious folks. If you own a folder, get used to people asking
questions. The questions are always the same, and almost always asked
in a particular order: "How much does it cost?" "Where did you buy
it?" "Is it any good"? Sometimes I am also told "Do you know that you
can buy two pairs of ordinary bikes for this price?" Yes, thank you,
I've been told already! :)

Overall, taking a train and using the folder on both sides of it, is
quite nice.

I haven't tried to take a bus, but I guess there shouldn't be any
problem - especially with intercity buses (considering the size of the
bags soldiers are hauling onto these).

That's it, more or less. Oh, 2 more things:

It appears that we will soon have a Dahon distributor. Another person
on this list will let us know the details once available. Dahon makes
very nice bikes - and they are cheaper than Brompton too!

And another thing - a question: does anyone ('cept myself) here indeed
owns a folding bike? If not, do you intend to buy one soon? And if so,
what are your considerations towards buying one?

Welcome to the brand new IsraFold mailing list! I thought it would be
nice to have such a list, since there are quite a few folding bicycle
owners in Israel, and probably much more prospective owners, all
searching (in vain) for information on purchase, service, regulations
- and, well, everything. I hope many more will join us and this will
help promote folding bicycles in Israel.

Let's kick off with some basic info about the models of folders
available in Israel and the respective vendors. I will probably put it
somewhere on the web as well.

1. Giant. Those who are on good terms with 'cumbersomes' (as opposed
to folders) probably heard about this brand. They make folders as
well. Theirs called "Giant Halfway"
121).
There are at least 3 modifications being sold in Israel, they differ
by their gear (either a single gear, or 3 gear with internal hub, or 7
gears), by the presense (or lack thereof) of the rear spring and of a
rear rack. Giant's flagship store is located in the new Nethaniya's
industrial zone, "Hamahshev st. 1" (across from the Cellcom building).
The bike has a clever folding mechanism, it is nice to ride, features
20" wheels and is moderately priced - ranging from 2100 to 2900. There
is also a store located in Ramat Hahayal, in Tel-Aviv, that sells an
older model of Giant for much less.

2. Dahon. Their catalog (available at their web site at
http://www.dahon.com/) features an abundance of models for every
possible taste. Unfortunately, they are not imported to Israel. A
single model of Dahon available here and there is called Piccolo, and
it is their worst. I tried to establish contact with Dahon in order to
see what are the perspectives of their establishing a dealer here, and
the chances seem to be slim: they won't deal with anyone who will not
be able to buy 100 bicycles at a pop, and this is just ain't feasible
in our little country. Piccolo I strongly advise against: I tried
riding one (though not a brand new one), it's a pain, and it will
probably fall apart after a year or so of usage.

3. There is a dealer called KSM, who brings in some sort of a folder.
I think we can safely dismiss it as a label bicycle, which should be
avoided at all costs, especially with folders:
http://www.khorshidi.co.il/index.asp?id=64

4. Brompton. http://www.bromptonbicycle.co.uk/ This is the Jaguar of
folders. It is produced in England, features a revolutionary design of
the folding mechanism, and it is a pleasure to ride - and to own one
(you might have guessed that I own one). It rides really well, folds
in under 15 seconds (I've taken times!) and will last you for many
years. There are 2 drawbacks, however. First one - it is quite
expensive. It costs somewhere around 3,600 shekels (depending on the
specific model). One is probably instantly taken aback after hearing
this price, but consider 2 things: first, if you go for a cheaper
produce, you risk having to buy a new one a couple of years from now.
Second: this bike really pays itself, if used as an alternative to,
say, a second car. Another problem with this bike is that its current
dealer in Israel, "Ilan's bikes" (located in Tel-Aviv, Bugrashov 44)
is closing down, and although Ilan intends to have someone import
those bikes while he's gone, the future is not so clear with regards
to Brompton.

Thats about sums it up. If anyone has more information, please share
it with us. Now let's consider the option of bringing a bike from
abroad. If you travel frequently to the US or to Europe, you should
have little problem bringing a folder back to Israel. Another
possibility is to have someone who is going to visit Israel bring it
to you. Due to folder's miniature size, there won't be any problems
with checking it in. You will have to pack it well though (remove
everything that can be broken, deflate the tyres, wrap it in bubles
and so on). Maintenance is not a problem: there are enough shops that
will take care of it. Warrancy is a problem though: If the frame fails
or anything of this sort happens, you are left bikeless and you are
forced to ship it back to where you bought it - and then ship it back
here again. I wouldn't risk it (although chances of such a failure are
quite small).

That's it for now.
