Re: What happened next?

The auld lad is a retired referee and there has been much discussion
around the Leinster Branch as to the legality of Contepomi's penalty.
It seems:

* Once a ball crosses between the posts, the score counts.
* If the ball goes out of play and is blown back into play without
touching the ground, it is deemed still in play.
* If a kick-off goes 10 metres and is then blown back, it is deemed to
have travelled 10 metres.

Anyone see the Leinster v Connacht match on Friday? The weather was pretty special and there was an incident which I'd never seen before. Leinster were...

Should it have been allowed? If the ball crosses the touchline and a player somehow manages to get the ball back in play, with the ball hitting the ground AND...

Glenn, It was a conversion not a penalty, therefore play can't "just continue". My understanding is that as long as it crosses the bar between the uprights,...

It was indeed a penalty. However the referee would appear to have interpreted it as Paul suggests. Any budding referees out there who have read the law book...

that's right (thought it was a conversion). I think it's still the same rule i.e. if it crosses the bar, it's a score. Of course, if the ball is blown back...
