http://www.SacramentoSkating.com/ is current. It has a report about
each of our Monday Night Skates. Usually we are at 3rd and S before
7:00 p.m. Your watch may be fast, or we might have been a few minutes
late.

Fellow Inline Skating Instructors,
"I don't consider this to be a good demonstration; it's not a safe way
to fall, and it's not the ideal way to teach falling."
It is a safe way to fall. I have fallen this way many times.
"A demonstration to a student should NOT show the belly hitting the
ground; the ideal fall is on knees, hands, and elbows, with the hips
staying bent. And there should be verbal instruction that emphasizes:"
I will try bending my hips more in the future. It may help me to not
get my shirts dirty.
"(1) Look FORWARD, not down."
No. Look forward and down. You need to see what you are landing on.
"(2) Try to get your weight on your knees."
No. Try to spread your weight on all six of your pads, so you don't
hurt your knees.
"(3) Keep your hips bent ("puppy dog fall")."
I will try bending my hips more in the future. It may help me to not
get my shirts dirty. This part of your criticism I tentatively accept.
"(4) Don't extend your hands (don't do a "superman fall")."
Right. But after your elbows and wrists hit the ground, slide them
forward, ending up almost like Superman.
"Falling the way the video shows will increase the risk of injury to
the face, shoulders, and torso."
I disagree. This fall works for me. It has for many injury-free
years. If you have a better Safe-Falling video and article, please
post them.
"Just to keep this in perspective -- it's WAY better to fall forward,
onto the pads, than any kind of backwards fall. This is a step in the
right direction, but there's a lot of room for improvement. I'd hate
to see students taught to fall this way."
I demonstrate Safe-Falling as I do in my video. It has always been
quite a "grabber". As I say in my article
( http://www.sacramentoskating.com/Safe_Stopping.html ), I teach
Safe-Falling in the following way, and I quote:
Practicing Safe Falling
Following the example of Mari Tonin, when I teach inline skating, we
practice safe falling as follows:
With all of our pads and helmet on, we knell on the grass or carpet.
Then we fall forward, sliding on our elbow and wrist pads.
This is a good way to make sure your pads are adjusted so that they
will protect you if you really fall.
Alan, if you have a better video and article on Safe Falling, please
post them so we can better learn from you.

Jane, Bill, Ryan, and Stephen: Thanks so much for the great suggestions on how
to deal with the 4-one hour class sessions with the "Y". The first group that I
am going to be working with is not wanting a lot of information on skate
maintenance--at least at this point, so I think a handout will suffice. Kim

The "Y" shouldn't mind, since this is not competing with the more basic skills
you teach in the Y pgm.
BTW Are you certified to teach backward movement?

I often will run 2 beginner classes back to back on any given day. I am
always amazed that the classes will frequently have a very different pace.
Currently, I have this situation. In the first class after 3 -1 hour lessons,
the class is skating on a trail and practicing on hills using good brake
control. The other class has just barely begun to work on using the heel brake
at
all.
I find that if there are 1 or 2 "challenging" skaters in a group class, it
will hold everyone back. You have to be flexible about what you teach. Have
lots of stuff in your back pocket and pull it out at the appropriate time.
It can be difficult to keep faster skaters challenged in this type of class,
but it's not impossible.
Good luck with your instructor career!

What I have learned with teaching skating is that everyone has there different
style of learning. Some take longer then other to get going while others are
amazing from the get go. I would look at your participants first to determine
what kinds of lessons that would be suitable as well as what the participants
are into.To start with I would teach the basic skills and see where that takes
you.

It's going to be very hard to cover much ground in just four hours. If
you have a class of absolute beginners with no ice skating, roller
skating, or snow skiing background, about the best you can figure is
basic stride, A-frame turn, stopping by turning uphill, and maybe
introduce stopping with the heel brake.

Handouts are great! I use them a lot. I have handouts that show a
typical skate pointing out the various parts, and one for skate
maintenance including wheel and bearing removal, rotation, etc.

And I'll be there in Ottawa.
There's a marathon in Cambridge Ontario, over nice country roads on July 1st,
followed by the national championship marathon the following weekend in Montreal
- those races are held over 4 or 5 days. That marathon is over the exquisitely
perfectly paved Grand Prix track there.
Walter attended these events last year. How's the hip coming?
And the following weekend, July 15th and 16th is the 24 hour event at the same
track. THere are skaters coming from around the world. You should try to put
together a team (up to 10 skaters) and attend. www.24roller.com One guy
skates the 24hours solo, and backwards!

Sorry, it's on the wrong side of the continent for some.
Next would be Canadian Nationals, in early July.
Thunder Bay sometimes has one mid-July, don't know about this year.
Winnipeg usually has one, August I think.

Hi Skaters,
Healthy Saturdays finally passed the Board of Supervisors Tuesday. Check it out
at
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/05/10/BAG1SIOGM326.DTL
There are only two things that can stop Healthy Saturdays now. The mayor could
veto, or the opposition could file an injunction blocking the implementation of
Healthy Saturdays.
Send an e-mail to Mayor Gavin Newsom ( gavin.newsom@... ) urging him to
sign Healthy Saturdays. His decision will come down within 48 hours.

Robert Burnson of Inline Planet webzine (50,000+ hits per MONTH!) just put up a
neat map to help skaters find group skates in their own communities and wherever
their travels may take them. You might want to make sure your group skating
events are posted ASAP as the map is likely to get alot of hits early in its
existence as it is announced, "populated" etc.

Hi Skaters,
The day before the S. F. Board of Supervisors was set to finally pass the
Healthy Saturdays Initiative, the six month pilot program extending the Sunday
car free experience on Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park to Saturdays, NYC Mayor
Bloomberg announces their plans to reduce car traffic in Central Park and
Prospect Park by creating a six month trial program turning the roads in parks
into "recreational asphalt" . We are making plans to help make the creation of
recreational asphalt in parks for health and fitness a national movement.
Today is our big day. It's a big week to say the least. I know that most of
you probably think that Healthy Saturdays in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park is
a done deal, but today is actually the second reading of the legislation. We
hit a snag last Tuesday when Supervisor Alioto- Pier forced some amendments into
the legislation which caused it to be delayed for a week. The final vote on
Healthy Saturdays will be today, May 9 at S.F. City Hall at 2:00 P.M. After
this vote, the Mayor has 10 days to either sign it or veto it. 30 days after
that we should see a closed road on Saturday and again on Sunday.
Check it all out on the latest episode of Skatin' Place. The show airs tonight
on Comcast Cable 29 at 9:00 P.M. in San Francisco. You can watch it now on the

BOUT RECAP - PUTAS DEL FUEGO vs. RHINESTONE COWGIRLS - APRIL 9
The air was thick with the clatter of maracas and the clanging of
cowbells as the 2006 favorites, the Putas del Fuego faced off Sunday
against the 2005 Calvello Cup Champion Rhinestone Cowgirls. A
fiercely divided crowd stood strong behind their teams, knowing that
only one team would leave the game still undefeated in 2006. Then,
like a hot knife through butter, the U.S. Marine Corps entered the
room and brought the clamoring crowd of over 2,000 derby fans to a
dead silence, as they gave the banked track an American flag
blessing to signal the start of the most exciting game so far of the
TXRD Lonestar Rollergirls 2006 season.
From the first whistle, the Putas shot out in a blazy of glory. And
like a moth to a flame, the first point of the game went to the
women with fire in their veins. But the Cowgirls didn't come to be
hog-tied, and with the second jam, they wrangled up three points
that set the Putas' blood to boiling. Only one team would win, but
both were determined to fulfill every derby fan's fantasies with
some of the fastest skating, fiercest fighting and bad-assest
blocking ever seen on the Lonestar Rollergirls banked track.
By halftime the Cowgirls had lost a key skater, the Catalac Kidd,
due to injury, and the Putas had gained an impressive 9-point lead
in the game. The rest was history, as the Cowgirls stayed high on
their horses, but were licked by flames with every attempt to settle
the score in their favor. Ladies and gentlemen, the Putas Del Fuego
are still undefeated in 2006, and are on their way to the Calvello
Cup Championship! Final score: Putas 58, Rhinestones 49.

The crisp and clean Holy Rollers seem like they've never been to the
wrong side of town, but on Sunday, May 7, trouble comes looking for
those not-so-angelic schoolgirls as the Hellcats cross the tracks
for a little social retribution. You can bet these hot-rod kitties
will pounce on the chance to sink their claws into some dainty Holy
Roller plaid. But don't count the Rollers down and out; they're no
strangers to schoolyard brawls and this showdown promises to tear
this city in two. Don't miss out on the action - get yer tickets now

SNEAK PREVIEW: Cherry Bombs vs. Putas Del Fuego, May 17
Their destined battle was postponed earlier in the season, and it's
only given these two teams more time to let their hatred bubble to a
boil. The deadly sweet Cherry Bombs are just fearless enough to try
to ruin the Putas Del Fuegos' still-undefeated streak. But the
devilish firewomen continue to build steam all season on a collision
coarse with the Calvello Cup. Will the Cherry Bombs detonate the
Putas' perfect season? Or will the Putas leave the Bombs crispier
than a fried cherry pie? Place your bets and come witness the
delicious destruction on Sunday, May 17.

This was a very long process with many minor wins to get to the ultimate goal.
I think what this represents both here and New York is the movement for
recreational asphalt is growing. The greatest value of the effort is unifying
people to make things happen.
Keep pushing. That success will come.
I am meeting today with the stakeholders to determine the actual date of the
first Sat. closure. It could be June 17, the day before the Napa Inline
Marathon.

David,
I am so happy that all your hard work has been rewarded with such a success.
I served on our City's Cycling Committee at City Hall here for almost 8 years
and we didn't have a single tangible success over that time that equals yours.
Congratulations.

News of Healthy Saturdays is on every TV channel, radio station and on the front

Also today the Mayor introduced his health/fitness program. I have already sent
