Hi Skaters,

Don't forget to check out "Roadtrip Nation" tomorrow night I will be featured in
an interview helping Su-Yin, Camilla, and Mariana to find their purpose in life.
Will they want to skate for a living? They hopped in an old RV, painted it
green, and hit the road to talk with inspiring people from all walks of life to
find out how they came to do what they love for a living.

The next episode will be airing on KQED (PBS) on Thursday November 12, 2009 at
11:00 pm. You can check out more on RoadTrip Nation at

Geocities is shutting down Monday and I'm forced to move my web site.  Those of
you who were kind enough to add my link to your site will now have a dead link.

I've created a new web site at http://inlineskatinginstruction.yolasite.com/
and would ask that you update the link to that one, and for those who don't have
me in your web site, to add that please.  I've learned my lesson now about not
having my own domain name and will eventually get one and transfer the web site
to it.

This was my best summer ever for inline lessons with lots of loyal skaters
returning for intermediate and advanced lessons and highest revenue ever.  I
hope you all had some of the same luck.
Regards,

Check out the video of the San Francisco Halloween Skate
http://www.skatinplace.com/Halloween%20BB.wmv
Sat. Oct. 31 - 9PM - Take Back Halloween - Ferry Plaza - Market and Embarcadero
Hi Everyone,
For San Francisco’s skaters, Halloween has always been a fantastic experience.
Skating through this magnificent city in wild costumes and in full party mode is
a very special event. While others ponder the demise of Halloween in the Castro,
the Midnight Rollers of San Francisco’s Friday Night Skate and the Black Rock
Roller Disco (Burning Man camp) have joined forces with FlashDance to take
Halloween back and present a grand haunting of San Francisco.
It's time to to have fun again in the City. The Ferry Building will be the
place to be on Halloween night.
  EVERYONE IN FULL COSTUMES!!!!!!
For the skaters and bikes, We will meet at 9, and skate a short version of the
Friday Night Skate. We'll roll through Pier 39, Fisherman's Wharf, Ft. Mason,
Union St. the Broadway and Stockton Tunnels and converging on Union Square at
about 10PM. We will engage the people in the "Thriller Dance" where we would
play music, dance and celebrate Halloween until the security comes. Then we will
head back to the Ferry Plaza where we will work up a wicked disco/dance skate
session leading up to a massive group Thriller Dance at midnight.
For everyone that does not want to roll through the City, you can dance your ass
off as FlashDance will be in full effect beginning at 9PM. There will be other
mobile DJ's like me and "Trikasaurus" and others that will be set up to make
this a real party. The disco beat will be pumpin' throughout Ferry Plaza as we
bring together the party people of the City and take back Halloween..
The success of this effort really depends on you. Please bring your A game
attitude. Everyone must be cordial, happy and above all sober and non-violent.
I believe that we all have to take a stand somewhere to tell our City leaders
that we just want to have a good time on Halloween in San Francisco. Why do
people think San Francisco is the greatest city to visit? Because we do things
like this. We take the lead!!! We need the city leaders to see how we were able
to pull this off without all the problems and negatives they are always so
worried about. This will be yet another example of what Halloween on the
Waterfront could be like just like we proved success with similar efforts like
Sunday Streets http://www.sundaystreetssf.com and Saturdays in Golden Gate Park
http://www.cora.org/HealthySaturdays.htm and PARKing Day
http://www.parkingday.org/ .
Since it's the "fall back" part of Daylight Savings Time, people will be able to
recoup that extra hour of sleep letting the party roll through the night. Also,
since all the authorities will be busy up in the Castro trying to keep everyone
else out, we'll be free to party the night away at Ferry Plaza. Come on out and
let's have a great time taking back Halloween in San Francisco.
Brought to you by the fine folks behind FlashDance and Black Rock Roller Disco!

Hi Skaters,

Last summer I was skating in the park on a beautiful Sunday afternoon when I was
asked to do an interview by three young women that was with a TV show called
"Roadtrip Nation". Su-Yin, Camilla, and Mariana had been traveling around the
world trying to find their purpose in life. Fresh out of college and unsure
about the career paths in front of them, they were determined to expose
themselves to more than just the traditional life roads. They hopped in an old
RV, painted it green, and hit the road to talk with inspiring people from all
walks of life to find out how they came to do what they love for a living.

Today, Roadtrip Nation has evolved into a national PBS series, three books, an
online community, and a student movement. They send people on the road who are
interested in exploring the world outside their comfort zone, talking with
individuals who chose to define their own road in life, and sharing their
experiences with their generation.

Somehow, I was chosen as one of the inspirational people by them.

Roadtrip Nation premiered on KQED in San Francisco last week, and new episodes
air weekly on Thursdays at 11:00PM. You are invited to watch the other episodes
that follow a Roadtrip through New Zealand. Camilla, Su-Yin, and Mariana's
Roadtrip starts with Episode 5. My interview will be featured in in Episode 6,
which will be airing on KQED on Thursday November 12, 2009 at 11:00 pm. I must
check if that is East Coast time or West Cost time. I will let you all know.

Hi All,

I agree with Tim. We should lead by example. In our own skating we can take
responsibility for what we wear (I don't wear knee pads for skate dance for
example as they get in the way).

I know one thing for sure. Wearing pads stops me falling so frequently (and
herein lies the problem - I don't fall for months and then take the knee
pads off while skating home and trip over something and have another scabby
knee). Ultimately this is how we learn, but it's a painful way to learn a
simple lesson. Pads help you not get hurt (or as hurt). End of story.

Instructors - my thoughts on this.

We are all instructors - we should practice what we preach.

All Pads and Helmet ALL the time - on duty or off. Simple!

Question - generally speaking - in most falls, would you be better off,
with or without protection?
The answer is obvious and it should be all the justification we need.

The "wider audience" is exactly the people that should be seeing the
full pad set up.

I like the open discussion that is happening on this.

I have been using some that look like beefed up bicycle gloves, with leather

farther up and a non-slipery (unlike the CDS Detroit sliders) pad in the

palm.

I recently found some of the Phobic aggressive gloves at a local surplus

store. They are completely leather, have a pocket for a flexible or hard

splint behind the wrist, and come back an inch and a half beyond the wrist.

I had them before but couldn't find them again.

It took a while to dig through the piles to find a pair that matched (almost

all the lefts were one size and the rights a different size) but I think

they were $1 per glove.

Bob, the guy that got me started a long while back used to wear those shorts
with the pads. Worked well for him!

The sliders were developed because of the exact type of fracture you are
referring to, just above the wrist guards. Story I heard was the fractures
were occurring to snowboarders who were wearing the same type guard skaters
do, above where the guard ends, from the pressure caused by the guard
itself. It was noted in Colorado or a study done there and because of the
frequency of that exact type of fracture, the sliders were developed.

The only serious injury any of my students has ever had was an arm fracture
that occurred right above the wrist guard. Is that better than the
wrist? Not sure, but it has shaken my faith in wrist guards. I make my
students wear them anyway (along with all the other equipment mentioned). I
use
sliders instead and everything else, always.

Occasionally there have been abrasions from elbow/knee pads moving out of
position, but never anything serious.

My own personal worst injury was a broken ankle from a twisting motion.
Not much any of the pads could do to prevent that.

I have had students who wear crash pads to help with the hip/tailbone type
injuries. These look like bike shorts and have padding built in for the
hips and tailbone. Usually worn under shorts/pants.

I'll chime in. Living in So Fl, elbow pads were not required for the lessons
Donna Momma and I gave for years due to the high heat. Little kids we were a
little tougher with as far as requiring them. Over 18- it was their call.

Personally I have gone down hard enough that both knees and elbow pads were
shoved down and road rash appeared on the places they were supposed to be
protecting. Aside from that one real hard fall, usually my hands would meet
the pavement before my elbows did, and I showed students how to drop to
their knees so they didn't land on their head. "Grab your knees, still out
of control get lower, still no luck drop the rest of the way onto the pads"
Obviously that would not apply to racing ..

I enjoyed reading your response, and your points are well taken.

Still, I would flip elbow and knee on your priority list. We come down hard
on elbows from higher up with more momentum. I race and fall hard. I've
had elbows swell up like oranges (even wearing pads because they get pushed
aside by the contact with the ground) from impact, but only ever a layer of
skin gone from near the knees.

The other place that hits very hard and can swell like a grapefruit is the
hip, which is unprotected. Discoloration/swelling can spread >6 inches.
Never had anything like that on a knee. I'm one of the few racers that
wears elbow pads, but never wear knee pads racing.

Be interesting to see if anyone else has an opinion.

I find it hard to believe that an elbow gurard will prevent most arm or any

shoulder fractures.

That you didn't mention seeing road rash or fractures of the elbow joint

(the ones that they might prevent) would indicate to me that they really

don't hit the ground much.

In my order of things they are 4th (of 4) on the priority list for

recreational/ fitness/race skating. If road rash protection for the legs was

commonly available, it would be 5th.

Aggressive, hockey, and freestyle skating have different types of common

falls and higher needs for protection. That includes a different helmet

style.

Helmet - frequency of use, rare - damage risk, extremely high.

Wrist guards - frequency of use, very high - damage risk, medium to high.

Knee pads - frequency of use, high - damage risk, medium.

Elbow pads - frequency of use, low - damage risk, low to medium?.

I am not sold on any of the pads actually preventing many fractures but

beeing more of road rash prevention. Splint type wrist guards might prevent

some wrist fractures and convert them into arm fractures. It might be that

from a pain/activity aspect that a lower arm fracture is preferable to a

wrist fracture. I have never done either.

Road rash of the legs and arms are more frequent than damage to the elbow.

The present knee and elbow pads don't block most of the leg and arm road

rash.

No Bernie, not wearing elbow pads for filming the video was a
calculated decision to increase my credibility to a broader more

bigger knee pads.

I find it hard to believe that an elbow gurard will prevent most arm or any
shoulder fractures.
That you didn't mention seeing road rash or fractures of the elbow joint
(the ones that they might prevent) would indicate to me that they really
don't hit the ground much.

In my order of things they are 4th (of 4) on the priority list for
recreational/fitness/race skating.

The present knee and elbow pads don't block most of the leg and arm road
rash.

But isn't that exactly the point, Liz?  We want the broader audience to realize
that elbow pads are really important and even the experts are wearing them.

And BTW, although everyone wears all pads to my lessons, no exceptions, my
personal opinion is that elbow pads are way more important than knee pads.  I am
rarely seen without them.

Hanging around skating events, I've seen lots of arms in slings from fractures;
shoulder operations are common too.  I've only seen road rash on knees, never
damage there.  Is that sampling error?

Liz,
I notice that you skate without elbow pads. I think that our pads
(knee, elbow, and wrist) can give an integrated protection when we fall. I have
expressed this via this webpage and its YouTube video:
http://www.sacramentoskating.com/Safe_Stopping.html . Apparently you do not
agree with me on this point.

Last night when I tripped on a twig and fell on the American River Parkway I was
sure glad I had all my pads on!

You know much more about skating than I do. How should we deal with falling?

SKATING ICON LEE COLE OF SKATES ON HAIGHT
DIES OF SUDDEN HEART ATTACK
San Francisco has lost one of its unique cultural icons.
In the late '70's and into the '80s you could not go out to Golden Gate Park on
a Sunday and not see thousands of roller skaters rolling along Kennedy Drive. In
the '90s Rollerblades pushed the old school rollerskates aside for the more
sleek and modern inline skates. Skateboards and snowboards were also grabbing
the attention of adrenaline seekers. Now the old school rollerskates and roller
disco are making a comeback.
In the late '70s and into the '80s, 90's and to this day, Skates on Haight has
been the king of the skate shops in San Francisco and beyond. What started in
1977 in a 40 square ft. space has now grown into a million dollar operation that
reaches all over the world as Skates.com.
On Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, Lee Cole, owner of Skates on Haight of San Francisco
died of a sudden heart attack. Lee Cole was an innovative and passionate pioneer
in the world of skateboards, rollerskating and inline skating. He started with
Skateboard City on Taraval and in 1977 moved to 1818 Haight St., thus the name
Skate on Haight.
Thousands upon thousands of people have rented skates and rolled through the
Skates on Haight doors stumbling down to Stanyan and into Golden Gate Park. As
time mover forward and the internet came about, Lee Cole was one of the few
skate business men who embraced the internet making the transition from the
brick and mortar store to the web based business taking his little shop into the
stratosphere of the world wide web.
Lee Cole and his Skates on Haight shop has been a part of the fabric of this
City that makes it such a special place to live. He leaves his wife Carol Sloan;
son Jack and daughter Elizabeth Cole. The Skate community, Friends and Family
will gather to celebrate Lee Cole's life Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009 at 11:00 AM at
Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Ave., Daly City.

Hi Skaters,

10 Days before we leave for the playa for Burning Man 2009!!!!!!!!!!! The Black
Rock Roller Disco will be located on Evolution (the Ring Road of CenterCamp) @
7:15. I will be arriving Sunday night, Aug. 23. I have all the wood for the
floor, lights, propane and other camp stuff. We have over 100 pairs of skates,
but we can always use more. Bring an old pair ofskates to the desert,
especially large sizes. I am doing the early arrival list today. More info at
http://www.cora.org/BlackRockRollerDisco2009.html

I hope you all have had a chance to send your condolences to the family of Lee
Cole of Skates on Haight. (carol@... ) His obituary was published in the
San Francisco Chronicle. You can read it at
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/08/12/MNCOLELEE1.DTL

I feel there is so much more to be said about the man. I am putting together a
video that will capture some of that. We are talking to members of San
Francisco's Board of Supervisors about honoring him. More to come.

Are you on Facebook? I have posted some pics of me, one of which is featured in
this weeks S.F. Weekly. http://www.facebook.com/sfskater

Speaking of SF Weekly, this week there is an article about the future of public
access television in San Francisco.
I played a major part in this as I put forth a bid to take over the channel in
San Francisco.
http://www.cora.org/SAN%20FRANCISCO%20PUBLIC%20ACCESS%20PROJECT.pdf I'm glad I
didn't get it as I have other plans in skating that are beginning to really take
root and that is much more important. Check out the SF Weekly article at

Hi Skaters,

It's 18 days before we leave for the playa for Burning Man 2009!!!!!

Before we do that, we're rollin' again to promote skating in the San Francisco
Bay Area. The Sunday Streets events have been a smashing success. Who would have
ever thought we would have 25,000+ people attending these events? This has been
a huge boost for skating in the Bay Area.

Be watching the news today as we will be promoting Sunday Streets coming up this
Sunday. This time we will be closing off nearly the entire length of Golden

*** PRESS RELEASE ***
Sunday Streets Brings Back Playland By the Beach"
Penguins to Penguins route connects CA Academy of Sciences to the SF Zoo through
Golden Gate Park and along the Great Highway August 9 and September 6 (10:00 am
to 2:00 pm).
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – On Thursday, August 6, San Francisco’s Sunday Streets
supporters will announce August and September’s Sunday Streets events, along San
Francisco’s picturesque Great Highway. The next Sunday Streets event takes place
this Sunday, August 9, from 10AM to 2PM, and will happen once more on September
6, 2009 (Labor Day weekend).
The route for the final Sunday Streets events of 2009 will wend along John F.
Kennedy (JFK) Drive in Golden Gate Park- connecting to the current Sunday
car-free road closure- to Lincoln Way (via Bernice Rodgers and MLK South) and
continue on the Upper Great Highway to Sloat Blvd. "This route connects the
California Academy and institutions in the Concourse of Golden Gate Park to the
San Francisco Zoo", stated Livable City Board President Cheryl Brinkman, "we
have dubbed this route ‘Penguins to Penguins’.
Like the four previous Sunday Streets, these final two events of 2009 will
highlight the culture and unique features of the community along the route. In
addition to the usual Sunday Streets favorite activities – free bike rentals
provided by Bike & Roll and Bay City Bicycle Rentals and Tours, Dance lessons by
Cheryl Burke Dance (of Dancing with the Stars fame), skating rink and lessons
with David Miles (aka ‘the Godfather of Skate’) and the California Outdoor
Rollersports Association – there will be Russian Dance demonstrations, displays
provided by ‘Playland-Not-At-The-Beach’ museum and Penguin themed activities by
the California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Zoo.
Sunday Streets creates a safe, fun, car-free place for people to get out and get
active in San Francisco neighborhoods. The inaugural Sunday Streets events in
2008 drew more than 15,000 people each weekend creating huge demand for more.
Last month's event in the Mission drew upwards of 25,000 participants.
The numerous activities draw participants from throughout San Francisco and
across the Bay. By far the most commented upon feature of Sunday Streets,
however, is the phenomenon of the open roadway itself. "The safety of the closed
streets was so appreciated as we were riding with our children whom are under 3
years old. I think it was great for them to see all the other kids out of cars
and on their bikes too. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday," wrote one
participant.
The 2009 Sunday Streets is presented by the San Francisco Municipal
Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and Livable City, a local transportation-oriented
non-profit group, supported by the participation of over 50 community-based
groups. Sunday Streets 2009 events are made possible by the generous financial
sponsorship of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Kaiser Permanente,
Shape Up SF, US Census, Blue Shield, the California Academy of Sciences, Zipcar,
Sports Basement, Sugoi, REI and a host of community partners.
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition manages the Volunteer component of Sunday
Streets (to volunteer, please go to www.sundaystreetsSF.com/volunteer.html).
Residents can find out more about Sunday Streets online at
www.sundaystreetsSF.com. Information about auto detours can be accessed by
calling 311 or visiting online at www.sfgov.org/311.

Although we know that you know a lot about skates and
beginners (your book is really good and I recommend it to
people without someone to personally instruct them), many of
us have seen this type of claim on several attempts at
improving the brake on skates.

It will take some real demonstrations with real skaters to
convince us.

I have sent them another note (one was sent a long time ago)
with my thoughts on the idea.

One quick way would be for them to sponsor a "braking
competition" at some major event where people could show how
fast they can brake using various methods (classes for Heel,
T, Stepping, Power Slide, "any method", etc).
It could be held at a major event like The Great EsSkate,
with some minor prizes and bragging rights to the winners
for each style.
It would show the ability of the brake vs other stopping
methods. Since the competitors would be trying to win, it
would avoid the idea that the tester was sandbagging he
method that they didn't want to win.

Dear inline students and colleagues,

I am asking your help to make my dream of a better, safer, easier brake
system come true. New skates equipped with the amazing 4XS Disk Brake
<http://www.getrolling.com/superior4xbrake.html> are on track for release
in 2010 by a major manufacturer (who I can't name due to contract
negotiations still wrapping up). You can help close this deal in two ways:

1. Submit your support through the 4XS Contact page
<http://www.inlineskatestop.com/contact.htm> . Added incentive: All
submissions will be offered priority delivery and a substantial discount on
2010 skates.

2. Become
<http://www.facebook.com/pages/Long-Beach-CA/4XS-Inline-Skating-Disk-Brake-T
echnology/107410562950?ref=nf> a fan on Facebook and invite your friends so
we can present a united voice to all inline manufacturers

Many of you already know about my commitment to the 4XS. After hours of
testing in 2007, I was impressed by these qualities:

. Easy enough for a first-day skater to learn, with no toe-raise
required

. Applicable to all skill levels, from novice to black-asphalt ski
nut on a steep hill

. Adjustable to current ability or skating situation without
unwanted drag

. Effective: Stops in half the distance than standard heel brake
skates. Really!

. Invisible: Recreational skaters get to look as "cool" as brakeless
speed, hockey and aggressive skaters

. Integrated into the wheel frame so you don't trip doing advanced
moves

. Equal foot size: No protruding brake in the back to hinder
crossovers

. Lasts the lifetime of the skates with no replacement parts needed

. Consistently delivers smooth, silent, and secure stopping (feels
so good!)

Everybody knows that learning how to stop one way or another is the
make-or-break skill of inline skating. I personally believe that the 4XS
technology is a make-or-break contribution to the continued growth of inline
skating across the globe. Please support this effort. (And thanks to those
who already have!)

Very sincerely,
