Hi Skaters,

It's 18 days before we leave for the playa for Burning Man 2009!!!!!

Before we do that, we're rollin' again to promote skating in the San Francisco
Bay Area. The Sunday Streets events have been a smashing success. Who would have
ever thought we would have 25,000+ people attending these events? This has been
a huge boost for skating in the Bay Area.

Be watching the news today as we will be promoting Sunday Streets coming up this
Sunday. This time we will be closing off nearly the entire length of Golden
Gate Park as well as the Great Highway. http://www.sundaystreetssf.com

Also don't forget the Black Rock Roller Disco party at the CellSpace this Friday
night. http://www.cora.org/FunkyTown.htm .

The press conference will be on Thursday, August 6, 2009, 9:30 AM. onJohn F.
Kennedy Drive, Golden Gate Park at 6th Ave
*** PRESS RELEASE ***
Sunday Streets Brings Back Playland By the Beach"
Penguins to Penguins route connects CA Academy of Sciences to the SF Zoo through
Golden Gate Park and along the Great Highway August 9 and September 6 (10:00 am
to 2:00 pm).
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – On Thursday, August 6, San Francisco’s Sunday Streets
supporters will announce August and September’s Sunday Streets events, along San
Francisco’s picturesque Great Highway. The next Sunday Streets event takes place
this Sunday, August 9, from 10AM to 2PM, and will happen once more on September
6, 2009 (Labor Day weekend).
The route for the final Sunday Streets events of 2009 will wend along John F.
Kennedy (JFK) Drive in Golden Gate Park- connecting to the current Sunday
car-free road closure- to Lincoln Way (via Bernice Rodgers and MLK South) and
continue on the Upper Great Highway to Sloat Blvd. "This route connects the
California Academy and institutions in the Concourse of Golden Gate Park to the
San Francisco Zoo", stated Livable City Board President Cheryl Brinkman, "we
have dubbed this route ‘Penguins to Penguins’.
Like the four previous Sunday Streets, these final two events of 2009 will
highlight the culture and unique features of the community along the route. In
addition to the usual Sunday Streets favorite activities – free bike rentals
provided by Bike & Roll and Bay City Bicycle Rentals and Tours, Dance lessons by
Cheryl Burke Dance (of Dancing with the Stars fame), skating rink and lessons
with David Miles (aka ‘the Godfather of Skate’) and the California Outdoor
Rollersports Association – there will be Russian Dance demonstrations, displays
provided by ‘Playland-Not-At-The-Beach’ museum and Penguin themed activities by
the California Academy of Sciences and the San Francisco Zoo.
Sunday Streets creates a safe, fun, car-free place for people to get out and get
active in San Francisco neighborhoods. The inaugural Sunday Streets events in
2008 drew more than 15,000 people each weekend creating huge demand for more.
Last month's event in the Mission drew upwards of 25,000 participants.
The numerous activities draw participants from throughout San Francisco and
across the Bay. By far the most commented upon feature of Sunday Streets,
however, is the phenomenon of the open roadway itself. "The safety of the closed
streets was so appreciated as we were riding with our children whom are under 3
years old. I think it was great for them to see all the other kids out of cars
and on their bikes too. It was a wonderful way to spend a Sunday," wrote one
participant.
The 2009 Sunday Streets is presented by the San Francisco Municipal
Transportation Agency (SFMTA) and Livable City, a local transportation-oriented
non-profit group, supported by the participation of over 50 community-based
groups. Sunday Streets 2009 events are made possible by the generous financial
sponsorship of the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, Kaiser Permanente,
Shape Up SF, US Census, Blue Shield, the California Academy of Sciences, Zipcar,
Sports Basement, Sugoi, REI and a host of community partners.
The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition manages the Volunteer component of Sunday
Streets (to volunteer, please go to www.sundaystreetsSF.com/volunteer.html).
Residents can find out more about Sunday Streets online at
www.sundaystreetsSF.com. Information about auto detours can be accessed by
calling 311 or visiting online at www.sfgov.org/311.
