Tina,
I can say that my coach has recommended putting smaller wheels on the
speed skates of our members that are experiencing problems converting
to larger wheels. I never had that problem. I have strong legs and a
good glide. Putting 90's on 100's doesn't seem to make much of a
difference in set-up, although, smaller wheels may include frame to
ground clearance issues. I understand that the smaller wheels will
also lessen the torque on your ankles, and, bring you closer to the
ground increasing balance.
I have used 84's on 100's in a pinch when my wheels were badly worn,
and, I just wanted to go skating. They felt slower, but, that was the
only difference.
I also have done a lot of "mad scientist" mods. I've put speed
frames on rec skates, aggressive frames on rec skates, rec frames on
speed skates, and lots of machine work to lighten frames or just to
make them fit. I've always felt a bit of pride in being able to
modify my skates.
I say try it and see how it feels to you. That is all that is really
important. If it feels natural and safe, it's probably ok. You're the
only one that can decide that.
