Hi Skaters,
Well, we are coming to the end of another season of skating. For many of us
die-hard skaters it's time to look towards the future and renew our commitment
to developing the sport we love so much. The question is are you ready. For
years we've been trying to create an organization that would take inline skating
into the 21st century. As it is now, skating seems to be in some kind of limbo.
It's safe to say sponsorship for events will be harder to get in 2009. Costs
for producing the events that exist now will be higher. There doesn't seem to
be any organized effort to create new skaters anywhere. I want to propose one
more try at making a unified, "for skaters by skaters" effort to help grow our
sport.
Racing is an important aspect of inline skating, but there are many more aspects
this sport has to offer that we can implement that will enhance the sport.
Skating as alternative transportation can put many more people in skates. The
700 billion rescue package for Wall Street was held up to add a 10 million
dollar subsidy for "Bike To Work Day". Think of what 1/10 of that would do for
skating nationwide. We must organize ourselves and elevate the status of
skaters and then fight for our rights to exist and qualify as part of the
alternative transportation mix.
On Saturday, Nov. 1 and Sunday Nov. 2, I will be in Houston, Texas at the
Houston Inline Marathon. http://houstoninlinemarathon.com/
Thanks to the event organizer, Justin McMurtry, I will be there to launch a new
effort to organize skaters and to help empower those people who want to grow the
sport where they live. My organization C.O.R.A. is now a registered 501c4 non
profit organization. We will soon have a 501c3 component. We are self
sufficient. I am following the model of a group that now operates on an annual
budget of $450,000.00 per year. I plan to share my experiences and knowledge to
everyone that comes to the expo and to the races. I want to help others recreate
our example where they live.
I will also serve as the event MC and I plan to produce a race video.
Are you interested? I am ready to download. Why? Because as skaters, we must
take some kind of action. The cyclists aren't going to do it for us. The
companies are doing all they can to keep themselves rollin'. What they spend now
is about all they can afford. We can do this. We can make the kind of
organization that help others succeed. That will create interest and generate
new skaters.
What do you think. Texas is a big place. Are the skaters there ready to roll.
Are you?
Keep Rollin',
