Lo and behold the standings are now on the site! Despite Potter's claim
that this is the most accurate information, there is one thing I am
waiting to confirm with him, that is the tie-breaking order, so for now
it is possible that the standings are slightly out of order. The
win/loss, and goal data is correct however.
I also made it so that each team has a page with their details (linkable
through the standings and from the roster page), which displays their
game stats, roster, and schedule. Game recaps are on the way.....

All,
The administration of the IUA appreciates the work being put in to offer a
schedule and name changes and such via e-mail. However, by sending your
e-mails through the yahoo group, you are sending the e-mail to people that
are not in the league and not sending it to some of the people in the
league. There is a website for all things IUA and specifically for the
leagues - www.indyultimate.org or indyultimate.danconia.org -
If you do not like the website please let us know. We are very actively
working on the site to make it the best source for all things IUA (even
pickup eventually). You can e-mail me or the webmaster through the site.
The schedule is on the site along with the scores of previous weeks. So
there will be standings and maybe even game recaps. Right now there are only
2 or 3 people making suggestions and changes. More comments would be
helpful.
Our sponsors pay us to advertise on our website. One way to sell that ad
space is by telling them that we have X number of hits and we get X number
of hits/week. We can drive up our hits per week by having people visit the
site to check the schedule, scores, and standings.
More importantly, the first place any information regarding the winter
league is posted will be on the website. Something like games being
cancelled due to weather will be posted on the website, then the captains
will be e-mailed and/or called and then the captains will e-mail or call
their players. Scores, Standings and Schedules are all maintained by the IUA
administation and we will only stand behind information on the website. If
something is copied and pasted and e-mailed incorrectly and does not agree
with the website, user beware.
We recognize that it will take some time to get aquainted with the
technology. There are some out there that would still like a personal phone
call and don't like e-mail. Now it is time to move from the e-mail to the
website. This is the best way to ensure uniform information.
**Reminder**
The IUA is always looking for additional help. Do you like what you see from
the organization and want to help? Do you think that the organization is
headed in the wrong direction and what to change it? Would you like to help
promote the sport to the community or schools? The current officers are
getting old, maybe it is time for some fresh insite. I think the current
group has been in power for 3 years. Fresh ideas would be a blessing. Please
send your name and area of interest and we can get you involved
(indyultimate@...).
Cheers,
Potter

Patches are welcome.

To any of you who are Ball State alums, I have created a website for
the team. I am accepting alumni profiles and pics to add to the site.
Broadwell knows how to get them to me or you can send me an e-mail at
onestringer_99@... with your pic and a bio to add to the site.
It would probably help to list what years you played or whatever you
feel like adding. There are a few examples up on the site so check it
out at http://thacracka.tripod.com
Maybe I can add some slight insight on this discussion based on my experiences starting a high school team in Cincy. I chose a very large school as well, though only ~1800 students. Still, there are more prospective athletes than there are spots on the varsity teams. My experience would also suggest that the spring is an easier time to get kids (especially athletes) out to play as there are few sports in the spring. There is also no substitute for actual face time with the players. I have found that few students will take the initiative to join, form or even inquire about a club unless you approach them. When you do though, the response can be overwhelming. I had students who were interested in playing give me their name. I ended up with over 150 names (though not nearly that many actually came out to play).
I am not convinced that I want to settle for the second tier athlete though. I have instituted a Jr. High program, which runs in the fall. At the jr. high level, there are fewer competing sports and clubs, which often means more available players. It also gets the jump on interest level before students become involved in more traditional sports.
The two biggest stumbling blocks I have come across are coaches/sponsors and practice areas. For coaches, you need at least one person who is willing to make the time commitment to recruit and train kids. Assistant coaches could be part time, but there does need to be a person who demonstrates commitment to the program. Like high school students, it is often helpful to ask people directly about coaching rather than waiting them to come to you. I have also struggled against the youth soccer powers for playing fields, but this can be overcome with due diligence.
I wish you the best of luck in starting programs.

Just a suggestion I have mentioned before on this subject...
Obviously, it seems like one of the biggest problems with starting ultimate teams is finding people who are used to actually playing (a sport) on a regular basis and are willing to donate the time because they know they want to get the exercise, enjoy that lifestyle already, etc. anyways, so why not play ultimate.
My suggestion has been to hit the larger high schools in Indianapolis, during August, during Soccer tryouts and early in the Cross country season. A number of the larger schools have very competitive teams, where many people get cut who are all used to playing, tend to be in good shape, and are "athletes" from the stand point that they want to play a sport. Many average/mediocre soccer players who may not have a chance to play varsity for a large indy HS team would
likely enjoy Ultimate in a similar fashion and be able to pick up the sport extremely quickly compared to most other sports' athletes. (I know this from experience, picking up the sport, not the getting cut ;-) .)
As an example I went to North Central, a school of 3000+, the soccer program there is storied, some 70-80 kids tried out for roughly 50 spots, of which 18-20 were already taken by returning varsity players. Leaving roughly 50-60 kids who are decent soccer players with no sport to play. The cross country team had no cuts, they would take 15-20 people to a meet, but only 7 of them would ever score a point towards the actual competition. Sure there is nothing wrong with competing just to compete (in fact that attitude is perfect for ultimate) but most of them will have no chance to really help the team to a victory. There are easily 50-60 "athletes" who are used to training and athletic competition who are ripe for the
picking. Get even 25% of them to consider it and come out (you would have enough for 7-7), then some of the friends will likely try too. Not to mention football cuts, tennis cuts, etc. (and these are in 1995 numbers ;-) ). North Central, Carmel, Pike, Warren Central, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, Noblesville, just to name a few all had the same issue with their teams.
At North Central there were 2-3 days of tryouts at the end of which your name was called or posted. If there were a representative/coach/captain/sponsor, whatever you call it, that contacted the coach (names/numbers from the AD office) before the tryouts and asked if he/she could talk to the players not making the team for 5 minutes after the announcement, had a planned first practice, I suspect you could get half to show up at least once.
Of course all of this is great, the tough part is finding someone or a couple of people to champion the actual school with
time. I would but doubt I will be here in August (no really this time)....

That is great that you are going to try to get Carmel into Ultimate. From the e-mail that I sent to Woody you can see what I have done. In fact every Thursday I have around 15 kids show up to play in the gymnasium at 6 in the morning. So, anyways some suggestions that I have for you to consider:
- There is no good season to offer Ultimate. Most kids that play Ultimate do other things throughout the school year and are not allowed to do anything else. Example - Cross Country (Fall), Track (Spring), Soccer (Fall and Spring), Marching Band (Fall) - You will find that these are the kids that are most interested in Ultimate.
- For the above mentioned reason I offer a summer league starting just at the end of the spring semester and run the league one day a week through the summer until the fall semester begins again. This way everyone that wants to play can play. Last year we had over 80 participants that included students, faculty, and community members. I have a feeling that our numbers may double this summer.
- I will be putting together one or two competitive teams which will consist of league players. Our league games will be on Wednesdays and our club teams will practice on Mondays. We will schedule games with other schools or club teams on the weekends.
- I will be contacting teachers and faculty that I know in surrounding schools as well as getting on some of the Indiana cross country, track, and soccer message boards to get word out about a High School league for this summer.
- My vision for the first year will be a very loose league with individual teams scheduling their own games. It will be centralized by a website listing the teams and their contacts. Each team will be responsible for their own schedules and recording win/loss records on the web site.
- We will have a league/state championship at on a TBD date at a TBD location at the end of the summer, before all of the students have to return to their respective fall sports.
I know that Brebuf and North Central is already looking for games and now (hopefully) we can add Carmel and the Lafayette teams. Columbus has HS pick-up that Doug Bringle has mentioned so maybe they will participate.
You should contact either the principal or the AD, I can get you the contact info if you need it. Probably the sooner you are in contact the better. Also, if you know a of a staff member that could "sponsor" the team or league if you decide on that, it would really help. What I have told my administration is that although we are a "Center Grove" league we are connected in name only. My students have to sign waivers that I keep on file. If you would like I will help you contact the administration at Carmel, I coach here at CG and we are in the same conference as Carmel, so I may be able to help.
I coach gymnastics here at CG so I am not participating in indoor this year, wish it would have been on the south side again - I could have made it. Anyways, get back with me, let me know if you want to help with this plan and we can put it into motion and start getting the word out.

Everyone,
We all have better things to do than read needless "obscenity" even when we
are trying to joke around with one another. PLEASE do yourself and everyone
else a favor, and find better ways of writing (even if that means using a
thesaurus, or practicing your vocabulary building with either a subscription

Thanks much in advance,

I am going to an indoor practice tonight (Sunday) in Muncie. It starts at 10:30 and goes until midnight and I will be glad to drive anyone who is interested in attending. Gimme a call, (317) 509-5370, or drop me an email before 9pm to let me know.
When I watch Snake Plisken bumping around N.Y. in a cab driven by Ernest
Bourgnine trying to rescue the President, I fail make a connection between
Manhatten being walled off and made into an island prison and that result
being from reality T.V.. Kind of a stretch Artcrapper, don't you think.
Reality T.V. went to far when it raced little people strapped to an airplane
racing an elephant strapped to a plane, with commentary provided by Carl
Lewis. But I doubt that show is going to turn this country into lawless
society ruled by pimps and dealers as portrayed in Escape From New York.
Best line of the movie "Don't make me beat it out of your squeeze" when
Snakes trying to get info of were the President is.........Classic. Oh, you
don't get slang, Squeeze is in referance to the guys girlfrind that Snake is
threatening.

i have actually been boycotting T.V. in general
because of these "reality" shows. Some day I have
this feeling someone is going to look back on what
type of civilization we created and go, now see, here
is where the united states really turned to shit.
Look at what was being portrayed on telivision. Its
scary too that people dont see the type of morals that
these shows promote and how it gets closer and closer
to the types of civilizations that people have been
trying to warn us in movies about for a long
time...(running man)(escape from newyork) though these
are movies, its scary how much closer we are becoming
to these types of civilizations. And the plastic
surgery one...That takes the cake. That promotes good
mental health all around. Well, either im becomeing
mentally deranged..(which is possible) all I see is
telivision getting worse and worse in a scarily
secrative and seductive way. Hope we turn this around
so our civilization doesnt go to shit. Chris

Hey, wind chill in the lower teens tells me two things:
I need to get a full length fur coat like Joe Namath, and
I won't be playing ultimate today as my precious hands need
to serve food and turn the ladies on the dance floor(not at
the same time).

Is everyone really still planning on playing in the strong winds and 6 inches of snow?
