There has been a slight change in plans for next weekend's event - we will
NOT be setting up on Saturday afternoon as originally planned but rather Sunday
morning as is our usual practice. So, we will meet at the main entrance gate
between 7:00 and 8:00 on Sunday morning. Darren has to bring the bus all the
way from the south side so he probably won't arrive until 8:00 but anyone who
gets there earlier can help me change my tires. :)

Hopefully we'll have great Fall weather like we've had this weekend (which
made my trip to West Lafayette yesterday enjoyable despite the game's outcome)
and a big turnout for the last event of the season. There are several points
battles that are going down to the wire so this event will decide several
championships.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Hi everyone,

I'm back from Mid Ohio with pictures I took at the Runoffs and are now
posted on Indyscca.org. I basically pulled all the ones I had with the Indy
Region folks in them and put them out there. I have a bunch more of non Indy
Region I will post later, but this should keep y'all busy for awhile.

Enjoy! .. I sure did! Thanks to all the Indy Region competitors. You sure
looked great out there! Congratulations to John LaRue 2nd in FF, Terrance
Garrett 3rd in S2000, Ralph Porter - SSC Hard Charger Award, and William
Baten 4th in T2.

Well, we have one out of 4 event volunteer spots filled for the October
16th Indy Regional Solo at Peru/Grissom AFB, gang. Larry Harts will be
handling the course design details. Yours truly will have the bus up
there Saturday around 3 PM so that course setup can start. Any
volunteers with some time that day are welcome to help with setup details.

But this message is not solely to ask for pre-event help. We need an
Event Chairman, a Registration Chief, and a Timing/Scoring Chief to
round out the management responsibilities for the event. Plus, we need
to have at least 4 people volunteer to work the entrance gate before and
after the run groups start.

So that's 7 bodies that need to stand up BEFORE the day of the event.
Otherwise, WE MAY HAVE TO CANCEL THIS EVENT. Events at Peru MUST have
more organization than is typical for our usual Regional Events due to
the nature of that site, so there are things we can't handle on the fly.
I hope some hardy souls step up before the event, so that the event can
happen.

Additionally, I'll be out of the contiguous 48 states from October 2-14.
And out of email contact. So, after then, please contact Chris McGuire
or Jim Lin to volunteer.

Clemens,

Friday, Saturday and Sunday general admission is $15 each
day. Looks like you can purchase a 3 day Weekend General
Admission package for $30 (Fri-Sun).

I am going over early on Friday morning and will come back
either late Saturday or possibly stay until Sunday.

I will be supporting the #34, EP Elva of Team Kraftson (Don is
the driver). Thier race is Saturday afternoon. I have been friends
with the Kraftsons for over 30 years and went to the Run Offs
with Don's father in 1972 in Atlanta (#34 MGB, EP).

I am not aware of any discount coupon other than Advanced
purchase through 9/17, which is now past.

I seem to remember that I received a coupon for a $5 discount for the Runoffs
every year in the past, but have not seen one this year. I happen to be in
town and plan to drive over to Mid-Ohio this week to watch some racind and to
look at some real sports racers. That's more convenient than a trip to Topeka
in the future.

There is no discount this year? What's the entry fee?

in the CSPL class it was dry when they started velma was in grid getting ready
to go and the lady next to her car wouldn't start, so velma says here take
mine,, can you imagin being in line at indy getting ready to qualify and your
car will not start and the penskie car behind you says here take mine,, this
sport of autocross is more than about winning, so now velma has a codriver and
before velma can get out on the track after the codriver comes back it's starts
raining,,, somewhere somebody is keeping track of these deeds and i got a
feeling it will all come back to you ten fold,,, i think velm on her third run
had an almost dry track,,, now on to C stock,,, one of the best classes to
watch,, it was dry for about the first 8 or 10 cars and then hard rain, dan's
stone co driver ,,, john armstrong got in a good clean run on his first run and
was in 3rd position at the end of the heat ,,the cars that ran after it started
raining were about 6 to 7 secons slower,, so even if you hit 2
cones on your dry run you would still be about 2 to 3 seconds better off,, on
wednsday on the north course it was a dry track the whole day,, armstrong was
able to move up to 2nd but couldn't make it to first,, so stonie's little red
spider brought home the 2nd place trophy,, now on to G stock,, this one started
out on a wet track and got better with each run, some ran all three runs on
dries and some switched after the first run,, it all came down to your last run,
and if you were one of the lucky ones to be in a two driver car you had the best
conditions of all, whalen coned on his last run so ended up in 27 instead of 13
if he had not coned, wilcox also coned on his last run,, rogers is running avon
225/50/16 ,, most everyone else is on kuhmo's except a couple,, harn being one
on hoosiers,, the run of the heat was turned in by savani a 62.517 an absolutly
blistering run considering that that with the number 32 he was at the begining
of the run order,, an in a borrowed car,,
stock muffler,, at the end of the heat everyone was asking who was that masked
man,, also i think his first time at nationals,, i think the king chiles was in
third and garfield was in second,, our man jensen in the way motor works special
was sitting in 4th,, he had a very good run for his third one doing what you got
to do in drying conditions,, wednsday brought a nice sunny and not too hot
day,,, chiles goes out and lays down a very good run to take the lead and never
looked back ,, savani hit two cones on his first run so that blows your
confidence and you are just palying catch up the rest of the day,,, jensen
strugled to get the hang of the course untill his last run ,, i think burns
caught him moving him down to 5th,,, still an excelent result for your first
time in topeka,, whalen stayed about where he was in 27th never being able to
overcome coneing on his last run tuesday,, rogers ended up in 24th on the avons
his best run of 56.513 was with a cone his next best was
56.833,,, just a little better than his wifes 56.886 who won the GSL class for
one of the first national champions for tha avon tires,, they were on the
225/50/16 a very tall tire , it looks like avon is coming out with a 225/40/16
for next year,, which could be a great tire for the mini,, chiles was the class
of the class with two runs in the 55's,,, however their was this one toyota #33
that had a 56.1 and a 55.9 with a cone,, probably one of the best drives of the
day,,, if you want to compair DS and GS the second day is the one to use DS ran
the heat just before GS and the weather was almost the same,, i think the first
5 or 6 DS times beat the best GS times,, the course probably favored the higher
horsepower cars as their was quite a difference between the GS mini and the HS
mini's times,,, it's too bad the rain spoiled a lot of people's chances,, it
would be nice if they ran the event over 6 days instead of the 4 and ran
everyone on a dry track,, not an imposible thing to
do,, as for me i wish they would go to a 4 run format,, but that's probably
asking too much,,, however since everything is all ready their and running i
would of loved to stay another day and done a T&T on the national course's,,
last year i beat one meanie and ended up 16 out of 24,, this year i beat 12
meanie's and ended up 14 out of 27,, next year i am gona beat all of them,
cheers

pulled the clipper out of the barn on thursday to get it ready for the trip and
the brake peddle goes to the floor,, right their in the barnyard,, can you
belive that how lucky can you get,, with this kind of luck i was sure to come
home with the championship jacket,,, turns out the brake line on the rear axle
had rusted through,, quick trip to napa and two hours later and it is fixed,,
the trip was uneventfull gas was from 2.95 to 2.79,, $225 to get their,, got
teched in on sunday and spent all day walking to courses,,, the south course was
my first one set for tuesday,, the start was kind of a pain not a very long run
in to the lights then a sharp turn into a 3 cone salom the problem was weather
to go through the first turn in first and then shift or to short shift to second
and lug it around the corner,, and it is a realy short shift,, i decided to
short shift cause i thought their would be less chance's for screwing up, some
people went the other way,, but it ment shifting with
the car leaned over and zeisler said he missed getting it into gear two
times,,, ok so now you are around the tight first turn and headed for the 3 cone
salom,, and rember this is a sharp turn if you take it too fast you will push
out and screw your getting into the salom,, after the first 3 cone salom you
make a little right and continue into another 3 cone salom and then a small
ways into another 3 cone salom these are rather easy and fast then a small
straight and a mediem speed right into a series of S turns,, they are set up in
3 pairs with 50 feet between the first and second and then 75 feet between the
second and third with a 12 foot off set to the left then another 50 feet then
back to 75 feet with another 12 ft offset then back to the 50 feet,, if you come
to the indy event on the 16 of october you will get your chance at them,,, then
a right turn into a 180 and then a dogleg left coming into another larger 180
then small straight into a left that sweeps into a long
straight into a right leading into a 70 foot 5 cone salom with the second one
off set about 3 feet,, then a hard right into the finish,,, i was asleep on my
first run with a 68.9 while most everyone else were into the 63 so the next
run i drove like a mad man ran over cones missed the gates on the long straight
DNF,,, but the time was a 64,much better so felt that i could get into the 63,,
if i could get it together,, so on my last run i pushed out a little on two
corners but not real bad and came in with a 63.863,, which put me in 14 out of
27,, i felt a little better but still disapointed that i had not done better,,,
at least we had a dry track for all 3 runs,,, more on the rain later,,
wendsday,, off to the north course,, which had been changed in the middle of
tuesday because the rain had puddled in one spot and they couldn't get rid of
the water to patch the cement,, so it was a little shorter than it had been it
started out with 7 cone 62 foot salom into a hard right 2
cone salom another hard right then up the hill slight left and slight right
into a big 180 back down the hill slight left and right then into a fast 90 into
some mor slight left rights into a tight right hand 90 into a easy 3 cone salom
then a mediem left into the lights,, this course was open and flowing with the
two right hand turns at the end of high speed sections where brakeing came into
play which of course is where i had the most trouble getting slowed down just
right,,,, the start was very very slippery so you needed to slip the clutch a
lot ,, so you went from slipping the clutch to turning the car around the first
turn while grabbing second gear into the 7 cone salom,, not always fun running
the salom right off the start if you like to have at least a little heat in the
tires,,,, my first run i went wide at the fast 90 after the down hill section,
had a 58.679,, the next run got it slowed down but was still a little wide and
had a 58.431 a little better but i felt i
could get into the 57 if i could just get it tucked in on the fast 90 and the
slow one leading up to the finish,, so on the last run i got it done but when i
got my time it was a 58.776,, i guess while i was getting it tucked in i lost my
momentem,, wish i had a couple more runs ,,, i hate these 3 run formats, it's
ok for the good guys but for us allso rans 3 runs just ain't enough !!!!! ,,,
now the rest of the story,, on tue morning it started raining allmost before the
first heat begain,, i was watching the CSL class and at least 3/4 of them were
starting out on dry tires,,, why i will never know because it was wet with some
puddles,, after the first run the people on dry's were all changing to wets and
at least some of the people on wets went to dry,, crazyest thing you ever saw,,
i sometime think people just do what everyone else does,, the next heat i was
watching the GSL my main interest was angie rogers who was in her G S meanie
with goodyear tires while the other 5
meanies were all on hoosier radial wets,, the whole heat was wet angie ended up
getting a rerun because of a down cone on her third run,, she had been running
with the leaders the whole heat,, she goes ahead on her last run by about .3 on
goodyear 205/50 eagle F-1 GS-D3,, now keep in mind that everyone else was on
the hoosier rains,, angie was allso on stock shocks, which might of given her an
advantage in the wet,, i have run out of time for now i will try and finish this
up tonight,,, their is lots more to tell

Well, Fifth Gear is on Channel 9, a station with the name 'tvn turbo' with
a lot of car-related shows. The annoying thing is that they play the
original sound in the background and have a male voice translate everything
into Polish. Unless the translator is taking a breathing break, you can't
understand a thing. Even worse, if it is a Polish show, everything is in
Polish, and you understand even less. Of course, this applies only if you
subscribe to Polish cable. If not, you probably want to stick with the
Discovery Channel.

About the Atom, I was in England a couple of years ago and bought a car
magazine. It had all kind of interesting cars in it, and the Atom was the
cover story. It was some sort of a track-day magazine and had a schedule
of all (or at least a lot of) track days in England. I keep wondering how
a small country like England can have so many competitive driving and other
car-related events and such a large motorsports industry. I probably
should dig out that magazine again. I kept it since it had some could ads
that may come in handy during work on the LeGrand.

Competitive driving is taking a back seat for me in Poland, although there
is some racing going on. There are quite a few performance rallies. My
company even sponsors one. It is part of the Polish championship, and even
used to be part of the European championship. I had the opportunity to
attend that race this spring. That was my first rally event. I just found
out today that one of our lab technicians is also a driver, but on a lower
level. He was one of the pre-drivers in that event that check the
course. I have also seen some closed circuit racing in Fiat Cinquecento
and Seicento cars on TV, just five cars or so a few laps at a time. It
looks like low budget racing.

With Nationals going on, I have been (im)patiently waiting until results
get posted. They are VERY slow this year posting. I thought I remembered
that results used to be posted just shortly after a heat was over. With a
good contingent from Indy Region going to Topeka this year, I am too
curious to see the results. I noticed that they finally caught up and
posted the results. Maybe they had technical problems yesterday. It looks
like the rain mixed things up a little. Some of the results were not what
I expected, but that's racing.

I thought for a minute you folks were talking about Fifth Gear on Speed.
It's another British car test show. The lead guy is former prototype driver
Tiff Needell and it's a hoot watch him throw some sh*t-box econo-car around

Years ago there was a National Membership Chairman named Tom Burke who was
also a State Farm agent. He said that State Farms underwriting manual
specifically stated that SCCA competitors were insurable.

That said, part of State Farms method of compensating their agents is a
percentage of net underwriting profit for their office; i.e. premiums
collected minus claims paid. And agents decisions about who they want to
insure takes precedence over what the underwriting manual says. They rarely
are willing to take on what they perceive is a risk to their bonus.

Tom spent years attempting to resolve this issue in favor of our members and
finally resigned from State Farm because the home office would not step up
to the plate.

I personally found out about all of this when my State Farm agent happened
to see my showroom stock racer on the street with its roll bar. My
cancellation notice was in the mail the next day. Ever try to get insurance
when you have been cancelled? One of the first questions on the new
application is: Have you ever been cancelled?

My advice is to stay away from State Farm.

Chuck Hanson

FYI most homeowners/rental insurance policies will cover this kind of
thing in a garage as long as the wheels are off. Everytime there is
threat of tornadoes my buddy takes the wheels/tires off of all his
midget/quarter midget/sprint cars (his house has been hit twice). Call
your insurance to verify.

Top Gear (the TV edition of the UK car magazine) is shown on the Discovery
Channel on Wednesday evenings. I'll second the motion that I find it a very
entertaining program. My wife, who isn't into cars and gets her fill of
engineers at work every day (we both work at Cummins, and I'm one of the
offending parties) even watches it when the kids allow.
