We would not be starting a new club. We are continuing with a club
that has been around for over 25 years and has a history and presence
in Indianapolis.
I believe that the best way to have an enjoyable fencing club, for a
reasonable price, is to have an active, volunteer-run club; a club,
run by fencers, for fencers. This way, we can control our own
destiny and hopefully avoid some of the drama we have experienced for
the last 3 years (from Indy Saber to AFA to BPF). The types of
activities described by Aron are exactly what we need. We also need
an atmosphere where experienced fencers can feel free to help
beginners, where everyone is working toward improving their fencing.
I recommend that we find a facility where we can fence 2-3 nights per
week and on Saturday afternoons. I also recommend that we create an
operating structure for the club that we have not had in the past.
We should consider creating the following positions:
• Head Coach (the person who creates the fencing "curriculum"
for the club)
• Assistant Coaches (focusing on beginners, foil, epee, saber,
etc.)
• Class Administrator (scheduling and organizing classes,
particularly for beginners)
• Publicity (advertising for classes, tournaments, results,
etc.)
• Activities (organizing activities for the membership)
• Tournaments (organizing club sponsored USFA tournaments)
• Armorer (purchasing and maintaining club equipment)
I believe that we should have a goal of 30 active fencers in the IFC
within the next 12 months. It will not be easy, but with a little
bit of work by a few volunteers, it can be done.
I think that we can offer our members great value for a price much
less than we can expect to see at our current location. We would
also have much more freedom to have the activities and training we
want.
