Hey all--

I'm sorry to be the bearer of such bad news....Please read the story all the way through.  I think it is very interesting that the quotes from David O'Connor and Roger Haller (course designer) blame the rider and another insinuates some trainers may not be adequately certified/competent.  And while those two elements can lead to accidents, we really need to encourage some professional (but perhaps outside) evaluation of the data surrounding the increased number of accidents and the severity of them.

Lee Ann Zobbe and I spent a long time talking about safety on Saturday night. While we all may not make it to the upper levels--these ripples affect us all.  We interact in such a small community and every loss is a tragic one.  The loss of Frodo Baggins may make the more mainstream news due to his "hollywood connection".   I encourage you all to find your voice on this issue and speak up.  Protect your right to ride and compete in this sport.

I wish you all a safe and successful eventing season.

Lori Goldsby

UPDATED | 2 horses euthanized after Rolex spills
By Linda B. Blackford

Two horses have been euthanized after crashing at different fences on the cross-country phase of the Rolex Three-Day Event on Saturday.

Frodo Baggins, a 13-year-old thoroughbred from New Zealand, crashed through the fifth fence with his rider, Laine Ashker, 24.

He was taken to Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, where tests showed a fracture at the base of his skull, as well as a severe lung injury. He was euthanized Saturday night with the consent of the Ashker family. A necropsy will be performed.

Rita, I agree with you. Optimum time is the best time to finish the XC. If a rider feels that that the OT for an event is too fast, then they should speak to...

I agree completely with both of your comments but here is my concern: I have repeatedly heard proponents of the current trends say that if you are concerned...

As last year's organizer for the Leg Up Horse Trials, we did not have any starter fences that were over 18" from the base--one jump was 24" from the takeoff....
