There's less than a month left to the trade deadline, but I haven't heard any

trade rumors surrounding the Astros.



Will it be a big trade? A small one?



And what are the Astros looking for and who are they willing to play?

Well, this one won't happen, but I am all for the Astros trading for Roy

Halladay.? Apparently, the Blue Jays are looking to deal the former Cy Young

award winner since they are falling out of playoff contention. I am sure that we

won't have enough for him, though.

Otherwise, I don't think the Astros will be looking for trades.? Although our

pitching staff is nothing to sing about, right now we have 6 pitchers that are

performing solidly and they can't figure out which one of them to drop from the

rotation. Therefore, adding pitching would just create more of a log jam since

we would have to drop another pitcher to make room for him.? The bullpen is

starting to perform better with Arias and Fulchino, so I don't think that the

Astros are looking to trade for bullpen help. Finally, the offense is solid and

with Blum and Keppinger holding down 3rd base, I don't see that there is any

hole in the offense that they would be looking to improve, unless it is our

bench.

Therefore, I foresee the Astros staying put.

No way the Grocer would trade for Halladay much less do the "stos have

anything to trade for him, unless we're talking about a package

including probably 2 of Pence, Oswalt, Lee and Berkman...

Well, I agree that the Astros don't have anything to trade for him but bear

  in mind that the Blue Jays are trading him so that they can reduce

payroll.  So, therefore, contrary to your statement, they would not ask for

players like Pence, Oswalt, Lee and Berkman, who all have large salaries.

Rather, they would be looking for players like Bud Norris, Edwin Maysonet, Jason

Castro, etc. who have great minor league numbers, good major league

potential  and require almost no salary.

When watching trade deadline trades, think of the trades from last  season.

  Pirates sent their All-Star Jason Bay to the Red Sox and  received 4 minor

leaguers (Andy LaRoche, Brandon Moss, Craig Hanson, and Bryan  Morris). The

Indians sent Cy Young award winner CC Sabathia to the Brewers in  exchange

for (again) 3 minor leaguers with no practically no major league  experience

(Matt LaPorte, Zach Jackson, and Rob Bryson). The Athletics sent  their ace

and number 2 pitchers Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin to the Cubs in  exchange

for (you guessed it) 4 minor leaguers (Gallagher, Morton,  Patterson,

Donaldson).

Remember when talking trade deadline trades that the "selling" teams are

not looking for star players.  They don't want great talent which will cost

money in the future.  They want prospects that are cheap and may mature

into good players in the future.

Appreciate your insights.  Sadly, the 'Stros would be making huge

mistake to trade what little quality they have in minors for someone,

even as good as Halladay.  Sure, (hopefully fully recovered from recent

injury) Halladay would make the team more competitive in the weak NLC,

but the Astros have too many weaknesses to go further.  The only way I

imagine such a deal would work would be for the team to subsequently

(after season) trade Halladay and his salary to another team for good

prospects in the beginning effort to rebuild.  Saying all this, it is

likely that Maysonet is not actually much a long term talent so if the

Jays want to trade him straight up for Halladay, I can dig it!

However, that is not going to happen.  I agree with you that the  Astros

should not empty their farm system in order to try to bring in a big name

player.  That Astros probably could make such a trade but the price would  be

multiple minor leaguers including Castro.  In fact, I highly doubt that  the

Astros could work out any major acquisition that would not involve  losing

Jason Castro.
