Hmm. Well, I understand that he has been an emergency backup catcher in the
past but the issue might have been that in the case of extremely dire
emergency. Bruntlett has never appeared even once as a catcher in his major
league
or minor league career. While he certainly has a strong bat and is
intelligent, he may not have the knack for calling a game and knowing the right
pitch
to call at the right time. Also, he may not have an arm for throwing out
runners at second and he would certainly be tested.
While Bruntlett is very versatile and perhaps could overcome lack of
training and experience after spending a year with Ausmus, I would be highly
surprised if the Astros are looking in that direction. I am sure that fantasy
people like myself would love it if they did look that direction. His career
OPS
of .712 and decent speed would make him quite attractive as a middle round
pick. (BTW, if that last note doesn't give it away, I am ready for Fantasy
Baseball season to begin!)
