amazons were a "mythical" race of strong and powerful women. they were
independant, brave, fearless and survived without men. Due to their warrior
like phisique and mental strength, athletic women have often been thought of
as bearing some resemblance to the amazonian women. some people use the word
as insulting but it has become something that can be used more as a
complimentary term nowadays.
