On the day that pitchers and catchers reported to spring training, eleven members of SABR's Rogers Hornsby Chapter gathered at Scholz Garden in Austin to discuss some serious baseball. Monte Cely shared some pictures and experiences from his trip to the World Series in St. Louis. Monte's research work on Bullpen Cy Young Awards has been nominated as a candidate the McFarland-SABR Baseball Research Award.
.Tom Wancho gave a status report on the spring training site marker project and passed out a handout with contact information for some of the cities and counties that had spring training sites. Bill Gilbert passed out some information on the 1962 expansion teams (Mets and Astros) that he may develop into a possible presentation at the SABR Convention in St. Louis this summer.
The Hornsby Chapter will be represented by at least four
members at the SABR Convention in St. Louis - Norman Macht, Bill Gilbert, Tom Wancho and Monte Cely.
The next meeting was tentatively scheduled for Thursday, March 29 at Scholz Garden. We will also plan for a Saturday meeting at Dell Diamond in connection with a Round Rock Express game some time this summer. A date will be discussed at the March 29 meeting.
