Jan - yes, I have to say that I was also surprised that Webb won. It looked like a year where a reliever might "sneak in there", and Hoffman finished a fairly strong second place in the voting. It was interesting that the mathematical formula was showing Billy Wagner as the NL winner - he didn't even factor into the voting.
Although, I think the NLDS showed one of the oft-overlooked weaknesses in ever touting a reliever for the Cy Young -- Hoffman was completely marginalized because the Padres were rarely ahead. A top ranked starter never gets marginalized in that manner - he always gets the opportunity to have an impact; a reliever can't necessarily.
... if Carpenter had just gotten one win out of his last two starts I think he'd have contended more strongly ....oh well .....

I'm actually surprised that Webb won. I wouldn't have picked him if we had submitted our votes at the end of the regular season rather than a few weeks prior.
