in rank order (the first listed position is the primary) and any
positions in lower case suffer penalties (-1 on DEF and some SOG
penalties, as these are considered highly secondary positions). The disk
is moving along.......

Dave,

Brooks Orpik (PIT) also played a handful of games at left wing this
year. Primarily a defenseman, but had two games where Therrien played
him up front because of injuries and illness. He did the same with
Whitney towards the end of the season, because of unhappiness
w/Whitney's play. According to NHL.com's rosters, they were both listed
as defensemen for those games. I don't remember if you account for
covering that situation or not.

Funny, but looking at the play-by-play for the March 25 Pens-NJ game,
one where Whitney played LW, Whitney shows up in the on-ice column in
the LW position, but w/D listed as the position, so the thing lists the
Pens on ice as 27 R, 38 L, 19 D (Whitney), 44 D, 55 D, 29 G.

We have been using the Hockey News lineups as the data source. If someone were to compile all the data from the NHL.com site relating to positions, we'd strongly consider adding data from there (although I doubt it would effect more than 10-12 players, and usually very very minor position adjustments like the one you mention). I used to have 3 good position sources, but now I only have the one (Hockey News). It is all a question of effort.....the proper data has be extracted to use, and I don't have time to do it myself, given all the other items I need to work on the disk, like making sure all the stats numbers are input and correct. I had a couple of volunteers work the positions from the Hockey News the way it was. If someone were to volunteer to do an exhaustive comparison of the current data I sent out against that in the NHL.com database, I'd consider updating the positions. However, adding a forward position to some defenseman who played a couple games there in an emergency situation does not add a ton of value to the disk......I caught the major situations were someone played a strange position, usually more than just a couple times.

Dave,

I don't think you'd get a lot out of the NHL stats - as I said, they
don't actually list Orpik as a left wing, they list him as playing
defense on the roster, but he's in the wing slot on the play-by-play for
the game. Compounding the issue, he's in the LW slot, but listed as a D
and there's another LW there. Had I not known that Orpik actually
played left wing this year, I'd have no reason to suspect that he was a
LW without going through the play-by-play line by line. Not only that,
but I believe some coaches have been known to use three D in odd
situations (much less common than using four forwards on a power play,
for instance), so we'd have to have some sort of idea how the player was
actually being used. Too much effort, I suspect, for a couple games a
year.

As I said, I didn't know if you even tried to take all that into account.

Hey everyone,
We've hit the 1/3 mark. We've got ratings for 10 teams completed. We
still have 20 to go and we'd like to have them in three weeks time so
that they are ready for Dave to start testing.

Teams completed are:
Anaheim, Atlanta, Calgary, Colorado, Montreal, Philadelphia, Phoenix,
Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay and Washington

I'm not sure where we stand on many of the other teams so if anyone is
involved in the groups for the other teams, please let me know what the
status is so I know where we need help and where I should be focusing my
attention.

Thanks,

Herb

Herb, the Blue Jackets ratings were done too even though we only have two participating so far and half point ratings. I will wait for other raters but not sure if they will submit. I can correct the half ratings in the meantime if you want.

Thanks Tom,
I would move ahead with the two of you. Try to eliminate the halfs by coming up with a consensus through discussions.

Hey guys,
For those of you working through ratings in a group or with another
person, if you just can't come to an agreement, just leave it, make a
note of it and let Dave, myself, or the testing sort it out. It's very
easy for things to be taken the wrong way in e-mail. I know it's
happened in some groups and have been involved in one myself....rather
than starting a huge fight, it's probably just best to let a third party
sort it out. After all, we're supposed to be doing this for fun, right?

Anyway, as I said, make a note of it when you send in the final sheet.
Either make it a 2.5 or whatever. That said, try to limit them to a 2 or
3 single ratings per team. We don't want to be doing a rating per player
or anything like that. But I realize in some cases, it might just be
better to say, OK, we can't agree, no sense banging our heads against
the wall.

Hey everyone,
Weekly update on ratings......

We've got 12 teams done
Anaheim, Atlanta, Boston, Calgary, Colorado, Montreal, Philadelphia,
Phoenix, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Tampa Bay and Washington.

I know the following groups are at least underway:
Buffalo, New Jersey, NY Rangers, Ottawa.

Some I think are underway, but I'm not sure about...
Chicago, Columbus

That leaves 12 teams I have no clue about the progress. If you are
involved in any of the remaining teams:
Carolina, Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Edmonton, Florida, Minnesota,
Nashville, NY Islanders, San Jose, Toronto, Vancouver and would like to
help out by kickstarting the discussions, please get in touch with me
and I'll get you in touch with the other members of that group.

Great, thanks Dan.

There have been quite a few groups like that so it's not a problem. It's actually a little more workable than the groups of four or five because there's always bound to be a strong contrary opinion.

Paul, I rated the Islanders quite some time ago and only heard back from you. Attached are my ratings. I didn't rate players with under 10 games because I think these players do not deserve cards because it is impossible to rate a players like Okposo and Walter on so few games. I also don't think the disk should be compromised to accommodate players like Forsberg and Fernandez.

We have 20 teams done and three that I know are in progress.

Still looking for someone to lead ratings discussions for the following teams.

Chicago, Dallas, Edmonton, Minnesota, Nashville, NY Islanders, Vancouver.

If you’ve already got discussions rolling on these teams, let me know.

If you’ve already rated these teams, get in touch with me and I’ll get you in contact with others in the group or people who can help.

The sooner we get this done, the sooner Dave can start work on the disk.

After a number of emails concerning the position list, I am considering
making an update (changes) to the listing. In past years, I probably
would have refused to do so, since I usually had 3 or 4 independent data
sources, but I've really been forced down to one source in past years
(The Hockey News) since there is little consolidated information on
positions anymore that seem to have any kind of quality to it. This had
led to issues with lesser known players, especially when THN has someone
listed for 4 weeks at LD and 2 weeks at C. On these players, I try to
dig some to see if I can find where/why this happened, and I'm not
always successful. I try to avoid giving a player an odd position (for
them) if they played one game there in an emergency situation due to
injuries. I've also been careful to avoid giving forwards a defensive
position if they play the point on the power play occasionally (the game
doesn't handle it well....and the computer coach will likely have them
out there playing regular shifts on defense...think Joe Sakic playing
regularly as a defenseman since he got rated at a defensive position due
to power play point time). I know people use the position list that I
publish to the list to make trades and start molding their team for the
upcoming season.....so I'm hesitant to mess with it. But there has been
enough noise that I am considering it.....
So, here is what I'm going to do:
I will accept suggested changes from people (many have sent them
anyway). To avoid frivolous changes, or changes people want made just so
they don't have to make a trade or fill a hole on their team, I am going
to set the bar high. Which means that all suggested changes must be
backed with hard evidence, e.g. a story in the team's hometown newspaper
where the position information is listed, a listing on a major website
(ESPN, NHL.com, etc.). Saying that you are a season ticket holder that
went to every game won't fly here....not that I don't believe you, but I
want INDEPENDENT sources. If you really follow your team that closely,
you'll have no problem backing up the info with data from your local
sportwriter's column or the team's website. Please do not suggest one
game emergency fill ins, or forwards that play point on the power play
getting a defense position.
I will then post the list of suggested changes, and the group will
decide if any of them don't seem right or should be further evaluated.
Then, I will publish the final listing. I know this holds leagues up
some, but there as been enough screaming on the final position list I
sent out that I'd rather get it right. I'd like to finalize all this in
the next 2 weeks. After that, I'll likely be beginning to test the disk
(the final reviews are nearly finished) and there will be NO position
changes after that.
