We still badly need some volunteers to pull out position information
from the Hockey News. We have 2 people that have stepped forward to
handle the 2nd half of the season, with
Gene Parent volunteering to do from Dec 23 on
and
Chris Weir volunteering to do from Dec 16 on
It appears that neither person has issues from before those dates. Thus,
I will probably have them split that timeframe. However, we will still
need someone to work the beginning of the season. I don't have those
issues either, so I couldn't do it by default. Any takers? This data is
vital to the disk project.

I could do it but its going mean sacrificing some of the scouting report. I
still have to input all the comments from 19 issues.

Subject: Tanguay can't play longer than 13 minutes?

I've run into an interesting situation. I downloaded the generic
teams used by Jeff Krauss for his APBA ratings study. I imported my
top line in one of my leagues using the hockey bus with the idea that
I would test different line combinations using the generic teams as a
base line.

During my testing, I have come across some weird behavior. I've left
all the shift times the same, 10 for each line, as well as the teams.
The only difference is that on my team, I have Markus Naslund, Dough
Weight, and Alex Tanguay playing on the #1 line.

The weird thing is that I've simmed several seasons and whereas
Naslund and Weight are averaging their GF ratings, Tanguay is
consistently averaging about 13 minutes instead of the 18 he is rated at.

I've done all sorts of tests, but can't come up with any solid reason
why this would be so. I've raised all of Tanguay's ratings to 5s
across the board and it hasn't made any difference. I've tried
lowering the ratings of the people behind him. I've increased his GF.
  Nothing matters.

I imported Owen Nolan to play on the top line in Tanguay's spot, and
he averages his GF rating just fine. I imported Grier to play on the
top line on RW and he is even worse.

Anyone else notice something similar, or does anybody know why this
would be? This is just weird..

Hi Hank

I noticed the same problem this season with Mike Modano. He was a high
priced FA in one of my leagues, and was not producing. I checked after 5 or so
games and he was averaging 9 minutes per game. I tried using all 5 line combos,
different line mates, I tried using him on every line. the best I could do was
get him to 16 or so minutes. by using him on 2 different lines, both pp and pk
lines.

His linemates were averaging 20+ minutes / game.

Interesting. As per Jeff Krauss's suggestion, I bumped Tanguay's PP goals
rating up to an arbitrary number of 20. The first season I simmed, Tanguay
had 20 minutes, and additional seasons verified this.

I also noticed that Nolan had 13 goals, far more than the 3 that Tanguay
had.

Apparently, the computer uses this number to determine who gets more PP time
and thus more ice time.

I checked and the generic wings playing behind Tanguay all have the same
number of PP goals as he is rated for.

Interestingly enough, if I bumped Tanguay up to 4 PPG, he averaged about 17
minutes, closer to his GF rating. So apparently, the more PPG a player is
rated at, the player gets increasingly more ice time.

I have the Hockey News annual preseason scouting report magazine, also the
Slam sports forecaster (which I find superior), and another which I can't

You need each issue of The Hockey News. They run each team's depth chart/line combinations each week. What's needed is someone to log how many weeks each player is listed at each position.

Hey guys

A couple of years ago, one guy Q-A'd my stats file to make sure the data
looked ok (he did q-a for his job and had a good methodology that caught all
the funny data. If you are still out there, can you let me know? My stats
app had to be totally re-written, and I don't have time to do the Q-A stuff
that is required to call it finished.

On the good news front, I may have a copy of the NHL expanded stats
(hits, blocked shots, giveaways, takeaways) coming. Yes, they still
track them....it's just that nobody publishes them. Should know in the
next week or so. Only downside is they will likely be coming in print
form and I'll have to input them.....so I may be looking for volunteers
to help with that.

I'm looking to create more goalies, probably the guys that played 3-
5 games but perhaps even the ones who played 1 or 2. I can't find
stats for goalies last season. NHL.com won't allow me to choose
goalies, it refreshes the page as soon as I click on goalies. And
USAtoday's stat site has an error, when I click on regular season 02-
03 goalie stats, it gives me the playoff stats instead. So if anyone
knows where I can find complete goalie statistics for last season,

Brad,

On NHL.com, click 'Players' and then choose each
goalie inidividually. Anyone who played at all is there.

Thanks for all the help guys, got it.

Now that I've got the stats, I've gotta remember how to create new
players, haven't done this in a long time. I remember having this
same problem before but I don't remember how I solved it...when I
create a new goalie in player.exe, I input all his stats, give him
65 min GF, and set his positional rating to 1 at goalie. Then I hit
F1. For some reason no matter what I do his GAA is being rounded
down. Also, for now I'm using 3/3/3 for SK/SP/PA...does that seem
right to you? Anyone know how I can save the correct GAA? Thanks
again for the help.-Brad

The GHMHL is looking for a few more members, currently three teams left. We
will be using the 2002-2003 disk to draft and play a season over the summer
before resuming a normal winter schedule. This league has some veteran
GM's. If you are looking for a new league and some fun, get in touch.

Hey All:

After a multi-year absence away from APBA, I've gotten back in touch with the game and am re-energized towards my former hobby, especially with the prospect of the new windows version of the game. I managed teams previously in the NWHL and RMHL and was a rater for the first few years of this disk project team.

- Where did the raters for the APBA Greatest Teams disk get their information for SOG totals, penalty breakdowns, etc, especially the older teams where this info is not readily available? Did APBA actually research the actual newspaper boxscores of the time to procure this data? What about +/- for early seasons, as that wasn't recorded. Where did their figures come from?

Thanks.
