Subject: Date of death sources?
chris.fletch...
Send Email Send Email

Hi - This is a great resource, thanks for putting it together! I am starting a
bit of research on
how long hockey players live, change in lifespan over time, and comparisons to
the national
(canada) average.

A couple of questions about the database:

Where do date of death records come from? I am curious about how much confidence
we can
put in these dates.

Some DoD fields are marked "9999" and others are blank including people born in
the 1890s
and presumably gone now. Is there a distinction here?

Cheers,

Chris Fletcher

The death info has been cobbled together from multiple sources.
Generally speaking, any source I have used (for the entire project) is
listed in the "references and acknowledgements" part of the readme
file included with each release. The death information specifically
has generally come from one of the following:

- Total Hockey
- hockey-reference.com
- Find A Grave (www.findagrave.com)
- SIHR (www.sihrhockey.org) - they've posted annual lists of
hockey-related deaths for the last several years
- LostHockey.com (www.losthockey.com)

I have occasionally added recent deaths (the last year or so) after
seeing news stories on ESPN.com, the hockhist Yahoo group, HFBoards,
etc. Though of course, these generally show up in the annual SIHR
lists. In case you're wondering, as a general rule I avoid using
Wikipedia for anything that I can't corroborate elsewhere.

As far as reliability of the information is concerned, I'm fairly
confident the death info is fairly reliable. However, keep in mind
that consulting multiple sources will sometimes yield different dates
for the same player. There's also one case in particular that's
probably wrong. There are two players in the database named Jack
McDonald - one born in 1887, the other in 1921. Total Hockey and
Hockey-reference.com give a date of death for *both* as 1/24/58. Two
players with the same name, born 34 years apart, both dying on the
same date? Seems like an incredible coincidence (though Adams and
Jefferson both died on the 50th anniversary of the Declaration of
Independence, so I suppose anything is possible) - I suspect the
likely explanation is a mixup given the identical names.

The "9999" entries indicate that a player is known to be deceased, but
no specific details are known. I have only marked players as deceased
in this way if they are indicated as such either in Total Hockey, or
in the player career totals lists in the Official NHL Guide & Record
Book. There are a number of other players who can be presumed to be
deceased given their birth year, but I have not marked them as
deceased without confirmation.

Thanks Doug - I missed the readme and notes files, should have checked them
first.

There are bizarre coincidences out there. As I started looking for data on this
topic I
clicked first on the 1922-23 Canadiens to find two players, Odie and Sprague
Cleghorn-
brothers, with my maternal grandparent's last name. They brothers Cleghorn died
within
days of each other and are buried in the same cemetery as my maternal
grandmother -
Sheena Cleghorn. Spooky. I will post updates on our project as we work through
it.

Best,
Chris

Hi,
The Jack McDonald born in 1887 is the one who died in 1958. I do not know if the Jack born in 1921 has died or not.

I have lots of dates, so let me know if there are any in particular you are seeking. losthockey.com is terribly out of date, and I will likely pull it offline soon.

Hi Doug,

I have been studying the tables in hdb-2009-01-15.zip for normalization.

During this process, I noticed possible typos in table abbrev.csv. Should the
fullname entries, with respect to codes AVC, AVF, AVSF, AVQF and AVPRE, be AVCO
instead of AVRO?

Thanks and excellent work.

Oops...not sure how I messed that up, but thanks for pointing it out; that will
be fixed in the next release. The next "official" release will come after the
playoffs have ended (probably right after the annual awards are announced), but
I will probably put up an interim release next week once I get the regular
season statistics entered.

Hi Doug -

Thank you very much for your work! I have attempted a similar venture many
times for my own use, but it always falls by the wayside due to limited time
and/or resources.

Some simple suggestions for the next update. In the Scoring file, you can
populate PPG, SHG, GWG, and GTG = 0 for everyone who has 0 goals scored.
Likewise, PPA and SHA = 0 for all players with 0 assists. (And of course,
similar concept for the post-season stats as well.)

Also, for every team in history that had 0 ties in a season, all the players on
their team can be populated with 0 GTG's. Similarly, in the playoffs, if a team
won 0 playoff games, then all the players on their team can be populated with 0
PostGWG's.

I know these are all pretty minor and simple, but they are certainly accurate
and are very easy to update. I have always been fascinated with the concept of
complete and accurate statistical histories in sports, so I just love projects
like this. If I can find the time, I wouldn't mind contributing other pieces of
data (such as uniform numbers, the respective components that make up +/-,
time-on-ice, and other data), though no guarantees.

These suggestions do seem logical, but there are times when it may be useful to
differentiate between "data not available" and "zero". I assume that the blank
data fields indicate "DNA" in the current files. It's probably better to just
let the end user of the files fill in the zeroes as you recommend.

Within "database land", the proper method to handle "data not available" is
through the use of NULL. Using NULL is unambiguous, where blanks are decidedly
not.
Some SQL database programs (older, less developed, but still) will either choke
on or incorrectly handle data containing spaces.

Regardless, I want to at least join hockeydad55 in saying thank you!

A year or so ago, I posted a message saying that I had a basketball database
available (see message #98 in the group message archive). I've decided to post
this to the files area - it's available as bkb090621.zip. The hope, of course,
is that someone will start an "open source" basketball project similar to this
one. But if not, it's there anyway for the taking.

I think the only substantial change since I posted about this previously is that
I added an awards table (actually, two - one for players, one for coaches). So
the database is up to date through the 2006-07 season (except for the draft
table, which goes only through 2004). So obviously, there are two seasons of
updates needed to get it current again. I'm very unlikely to take it any
further at this point.

I don't want to generate a lot of off-topic discussion about basketball in this
group, so if anyone has questions about the database, please contact me offline.
But of course, if someone start a basketball-databank group, feel free to make
an announcement here.

Hi,
Most sources list Bobby Hull with 67 games played in the 1960-61 season, but in
compiling that season's lineups, I have discovered that he actually missed four
games, giving him only 66 games played for the season. In addition to being not
listed in the lineups for 12/24/60, 12/25/60, 1/18/61, and 1/21/61, the Chicago
paper's game stories mention his absence from these four games.
Not a big deal, but I just thought I'd mention it here.

Just a quick note about the hat trick file I just uploaded - the columns are:

year
month
date
playerID
goals
league
team
opponent
site

This is very preliminary at this point - it's NHL only, and only complete from
about 1960 onward (lots of gaps in particular for earlier seasons for Boston).

The NHL does distribute all of these electronically now -- available for any
media member to grab.

In fact, the Islanders are not producing any printed materials this year. It's
just electronic.

Not sure of the copyrgiht ramifications (if any) of that.

Do you have a link on the NHL site for this information? Are they making it available to the public for free? It would be OK to make the link available.

If not, and they're only sending this out on DVDs to selected parties, then it would be a copyright violation to put it on a filesharing system like bittorrent. The NHL still has the right to decide who gets a copy of their guide and who doesn't.

I've occasionally been sent free electronic copies of books. I've never believed that I then had the right to send those along to others, or to put them on my website for the world to take.

Ad far as I know, it's only on the password-protected media.nhl.com site.

I think most teams are headed in that direction as the cost of producing those
media guides in print continues to increase. I'm sure before long a lot of teams
will have the digital only version available.

It's just electronic.

The SPHL makes their available online at their website:

http://www.thesphl.com/view/thesphl/history-of-the-sphl/media-guide-1

I'm not sure if they produce a printed version.

I have also seen a lot of NCAA teams that publish their media guide on their sports site.

If I'm understanding your system correctly, the one objection I have is that
you're basing your seasonal results on each player's per game average, not on
the raw totals. I assume this is why Cam Neely ranks #1 in goals for 1993-94 -
he led the league in goals per game by a wide margin, but did not lead in goals
scored (he only played in 49 games). This essentially rewards players for
results that would theoretically have been achieved in games that they didn't
play in.

For example, in Neely's case (and by the way, I'm a Bruins fan, so I certainly
don't hate Cam Neely), I think it's unrealistic to assume the same goal-scoring
pace over 84 games. Among other things, the Bruins generally avoided playing
him on consecutive days, which presumably meant he was fresher when he did play.
I know he was more or less playing on one leg, but regardless - playing the full
schedule would wear anyone down more than playing 49 games.

The other point, which sort of goes along with what I said already, is that
durability is a "skill", of sorts. Or at least, it's a valuable characteristic.
Projecting results achieved over fewer games takes that advantage away from the
players who managed to stay healthy.

Thanks for the comments Doug. I will fully admit that this is one downside of
the parameters I've picked for my system, and that it might lead to some
disagreements for certain seasons. I thought about that as I went through it.
I could easily change this parameter to be for 75% of the season, or even 90%,
and we might get slightly different results. However, I still think the results
are pretty interesting (prompting this discussion). For example, while Cam
Neely was being rested quite a bit, would anyone doubt the amazing season Mario
Lemieux had when he played only 60 games due to injury? In that case, I have
even greater respect for the effort given his health. But it is a point well
taken! Thanks for checking it out!

Hi Doug - I sent you a reply...I'm not sure why it didn't post. I won't rehash
it in case it does, but the long and short of it was - I agree with you. I was
looking for a different way to present data, and these types of things will show
up. We could easily make this work with your point below by changing the
threshold for "games played" to 75% or more of the season. At the very least, I
think I intended it just to help foster conversation (which it's clearly doing)!
Thanks for the comments!

Hi all,
This is my very first post here, so I apologize in advance if this post runs
counter to proper hockey-databank etiquette in any manner.

Anyhow, I am desperately trying to locate the rosters for the 1992 All-Star
Heroes of Hockey game held on January 17, 1992 at the Philadelphia Spectrum. I
know that the two teams involved were the NHL Legends versus the '74-'75 Flyers
squad, but I can't seem to locate any information regarding exactly which
players comprised these squads. Any information regarding the rosters or a box
score would be greatly appreciated.

   Thanks in advance.
-Darren
