The Rally road is off The Catchcoma Rd -Hwy 507- 507 has received major changes
since 1972 when it was a real fun road :-))

I understand that the Crotch Rocket Guys have a web site posting there illegal
insne times on this road. Like Tail of the Dragon in US

Just one point we are in Southern Ontario. You may know Mark Williams from
Maryland area with his Historic Falcon. He has co-driven for Champion driver Tom
MacGeer on this event.

Currently this is the only event in the series to offer a Classic Division. Cars
compete in the regular GCFR and scored according to RSO classes. They are then
additionally scored in a 'Run what Ya' brung' Classic Division. Should we get
enough entries as time moves on we will class them

2006 is being treated as an Exibition as much as anything else

I remember that the first tight section of the 1972 Canadian Winter
Rally was on a highway called the Catchcoma Road. Is this is the same
vacinity?
Northern Ontario is a bit of a stretch from Maryland, but thanks for the
information. Are these same classes used in other events in that series?

All,
I would like to thank all those who communicated with me on this
subject. It's nice to know that there is interest in this topic. It is my hope
that
once the car is finished, I can find things to do with it. I envy those who
can participate in events like the Targa Newfoundland, sadly the costs
involved prohibit my involvement. I am confined by budget to one day or weekend
events. I have not yet heard of many opportunities to do this in the
northeastern United States.

Hi Len,

The Saab 96 rally car that was hidden away in a garage near Duluth,
Minnesota, has found a new home. Kevin Clemens (who writes for EUROPEAN CAR
magazine) bought the car a few weeks ago and is preparing to drive it in
the Vintage race at Brainerd, MN, on Memorial Day weekend.

Spent yesterday following Kevin and several other intrepid souls as they
attempted the 1100 mile lap of Lake Superior. Kevin is driving a Citroen
2CV, there is another 2CV driven by Andy and Linda Lindberg, a Morgan 4-4
driven by Rich and Liz Stadther, and an MG Midget with Tom Moerke at the
wheel. Randy Jokela and I followed them for awhile in my '85 Saab 900 and
took photos. Will be posting photos today or tomorrow. Their Circle Tour
itinerary can be found at:

Hi Len;

I am somewhat envious of your father/son project in constructing a 73 SAAB 96
rally car. I think that would be one fun time. I'm not sure, but was not that
car one of the rally cars that Pat Moss is noted for driving ?

Anyway, my main point is to suggest that you check out the Targa Newfoundland
web site which is at: http://www.targanewfoundland.com/home.htm

Hi Len,

You may remember I bought a Halda from you. There is a new Saab 96
rallying out here in the west driven by Garth Ankeny of Portland.

Just wanted you to know people are very happy to see a classic Saab
out on the stages.

Welcome to the list,

Glenn

I am looking to correspond with people who have knowledge of the BMC
Works Rallye Minis. Primarily for information on parts, "why'd they do
that", etc.

I am building my '64 Austin Cooper S into a replica Works Rallye car
(okay...not completely since mine is OEW/BRG). I have most of the
books to own on the subject...but want other Mini Rallye enthusiasts to
talk to. USA or Mother England or anywhere else.

North of the Border Galway Cavendish Forest Rally on Aug 19th Organized by the
Peterborough Motor Sports Club www.pmsc.on.ca This will be the 5th year for
this event and will add Classic and Post Classic Divisions this year
Location is Catchcoma which is Northerly of Peterborough Ontario

The Rally is a Regional event and is part of RallySport Ontario OPRC series. The
Road we use is 6 passes on a extremely hard packed gravel road. The road has a
bed of crushed limestone and is packed down by the large number of Transport
trucks hauling the stone. [Yes there is some loose stone but much is swept of
the traveled portion by the faster cars]

Total rally length is just under 50kms to meet insurance regulations for the
event. There will be a chance to drive the road earlier in the day for
familiarization-these will be at low speed.

I invite you or anyone else that is interested to contact me off list at
gulliver-at-nexicom-dot-net

Last year, I watched the rally stage at the Goodwod Festival of Speed.
Wonderful!. Car/Driver combinations present were: Munari/Stratos, Mikkola/Audi,
Fall/Datsun, Ragnotti/Renault and others. Also present was a group called Slowly
  Sideways (see _www.slowlysideways.com_ (http://www.slowlysideways.com) ), a
group of gentlemen with ex-works Group B rally cars. I gather they take them
to special events to compete and/or demonstrate their vehicles. Would anyone
in the northeast be interested in participating in such a group? Do you have
any idea of what events might be vulnerable to participation of a group like
this?

Dan,

That's a nice remembrance of him. I knew it a couple hours later but totally
forgot to inform this group as I did many other
people... sorry

As a Datsun rally man, one of our heroes, 'DNF'. A big loss in the rally world.
A Legend is gone!!
This is the announcement on my rally website
-------------------------------------------
Mr Shekhar Mehta passed away in a London hospital on 12th April 2006 after a
short illness. He was taken ill on the island of
Corsica, where he was attending to his duties as the Rally Commissioner for the
FIA on the 'Tour De Corse' round of the World Rally
Championship. He was just 60 years old.

Born in 1945 - a Ugandan of Indian extraction - Shekhar entered his first
competitive event in 1966. He went on to win the East
African Safari Rally a total of 5 times - four of them in 'Datsun'-branded cars.
First of these ( in 1973 ) in a Works Datsun 240Z
co-driven by Lofty Drews - the second Safari win for the 240Z.

Shekhar rallied all over the world, in famous events such as the RAC Rally in
the UK, The Monte Carlo Rallye, The Southern Cross
Rally in Australia, The TAP Rallye in Portugal, The Acropolis Rally etc etc - as
well as many national and club events in the UK.

Sincere condolences to his wife Yvonne and son Vijay and all who loved him

Regards,
Guus van der Bol

We received the sad news of the passing of Shekhar Mehta.

Rosie and I only had a brief encounter with Shekhar for a few days of each
October when he competed in the Southern Cross Rally.

Although brief, those annual meetings were memorable. I remember well...

Shekhar was in our Sydney home playing with our Old English sheepdog,
"Shaggy Shoes"; Shekhar remarked he was going to call his own dog "Great
Reluctance" so when he was jet-setting around the World rallying, he could
bid Yvonne farewell and say, as he skipped through the airport departure
gate, "I am leaving you with Great Reluctance"
.... and then he would laugh as only Shekhar could laugh.

Adieu, old friend.

I have a complete rear end setup that would suit a rally volvo, LSD,

I'm in the process of trying to get the parts together to change

Spa (B), April 22-23, 2006

The ING Ardenne Bleue once more
reveals unique places in the Ardennes

Saturday April 22, a pleiad of exceptional historical cars will gather
for the 5th time at the centre of Spa for the start of the ING Ardenne
Bleue. It happens to be the first rally of its category at the Belgian
calendar and the experts describe it as being the best.

In fact, the majority of the crews will be already on the spot Friday
afternoon because the first administrative and technical controls will
begin little after 3 p.m. at the Parc des 7 Heures, in the shade of
the New Thermal baths and the SAS-Radisson Palace Hotel. More than one
hundred cars will be present, going from the majestic body of the cars
of the 20s, 30s and 40s to the elegant sportscar jewels of the
Fifties and Sixties.

April 22 thus, at 8.30 hours precise, the first competitor will pass
under the starting arch in order to conquer the secret course, with the
help of the detailed road book. Faithful to its reputation, the ING
Ardenne Bleue will make discover to all the participants the superb
landscapes still little known in the region in alternation with places
which testify to a glorious past. At lunchtime, a particular site will
accomodate the participants with delicious regional specialities of the
Ardennes. Because, in margin of the sporting and tourist aspects, the
regional habits and the gastronomy are surely not forgotten.

On saturday midday, this time, the rally-men are the hosts of the
Auberge de la Ferme in Rochehaut. It is an old farm which, when the
Boreux family was expropriated for the establishment of the E411
motorway, was reconverted in a hotel with restaurant, a cellar for wine
tasting and a remarkable Ardennes store. The first car is awaited in Spa
around 6 p.m.

Sunday morning the first car will also take the start at 8h30. A secret
course of approximately 250 km is on the program again, with a lunch
halt in Medell, a green oasis of the cantons of the east between
Sankt-Vith and Amel. The rally will visit there an incredibly large
village hall of the local shooting club, the "Schützenverein St
Hubertus", a tradition anchored well in the German-speaking part of
Belgium. The first car is awaited around 16h15 in Spa.

Afterworths at the pricegiving ceremony the participants are to meet the
notable inhabitants of Spa in the Casino.

There are a few of us here in Canada -- a couple of 140s that are active,
an 1800 ES that made its competition debut last year at Targa Newfoundland,
and several under construction. My 142 was built for forest events but has
been converted to tarmac spec to do events in Australia, New Zealand and
now here in Canada. Like others, we draw competition parts from sources
around the world, while there are a number of good sources for 'factory'
parts here.

There are plenty of Volvos rallying here in the UK and elsewhere in
Europe. There are some PVs around (mostly 544s, occasionally a 444),
lots of Amazons, and 140s seem to be becoming more popular year by
year (I was in a team of three 140s doing Le Jog last December).

If you look at the entry list for the Historic Monte Carlo
(http://www.acm.mc/rmch/rmch_main.php), you'll see just how popular
they are - even a couple of P1800s there.

Hi Thomas,

Given your address, I figure you are at the AFA or an alum. If you are
currently in Colorado, the rally group here is putting together a spec Volvo
class for rallycross. Check it out at www.coloradorally.org and join the
mailing list. BTW, they are looking at 240s and the like, but they haven't
finalized details.

Hello all; In their automobilia auction on February 21, 2006, H&H Classic
Auctions is including the personal archives of the now deceased rally driver
David Seigle-Morris. David was a successful “Big Healey” and Mini competitor of
the early 60’s. He took a lot of class wins on major European rallies. For
those of you interested, a listing of the auction lots can be found at
http://www.classic-auctions.co.uk/automobilia_entries_index.html at the bottom
of the page.

I received the following request on Cdn Motor Sport Historical Group list and
thought you may be interested in the search for the '64 TR4 Shell 4000 rally
car. Please pass the word around and/or put it in the club newsletters.
Perhaps one of our club members can help Marcel.

   Enjoy!! --Scott

Subject: [CMSHG] Team Triumph TR4's in '64 Shell 4000

In 1964 Team Triumph entered 3 Works TR4's in the Shell 4000 rally. The
cars were prepared in New York by Kas Kastner and although they didn't
place exceptionally well, their legend is larger than life. So large,
in fact, that Revell has produced a model of one of the cars in 4000
trim. Unfortunately, the legitimacy of that car is in question.

When I started the 4000 history project I was contacted by a bloke in
Germany who claimed to have one of the cars and wanted to know if I had
the registration documents from the 4000, you know, the one with the
VIN number? I asked him to send me his VIN so I could check, but he
never followed through. He's been pestering me ever since. Late last
year I was contacted by an owner of one of the other TR4's who
confirmed my suspicions about the German car. Yesterday I was contacted
by another TR owner in Germany who wants to do an article about the
Works replica and expose the fraud. By coincidence I was also contacted
by Kas Kastner yesterday who also wants to do an article on the '64
Shell cars.

I'm trying to coordinate all these researchers so they, hopefully, come
up with the same result, but I need to follow up on one thing: it is
claimed that the REAL car is still in the USA in poor condition. The
hunt for the remains has to start somewhere, so I'll start it here.
Anyone know of a blue '64 TR4 in rally trim sitting around in the USA?
