Subject: withdrawing from Targa Newfoundland, will still push to finish the
Cortina

Friends,

While we've made some good progress on the car, at this stage it is pretty
certain that it will not be ready in time (8/16) to ship to Targa
Newfoundland, and consequently I will have to withdraw. The bodywork took a
lot longer than we expected (the floor damage was far worse than originally
thought), and although I have a running engine there are many more items
that need attention, given the condition of the car before we stripped it.
As you know, I feel that when you're building a competition vehicle there is
only one way to build it, the right way, with safety and reliability in
mind.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement.

However, looking at the car as it sits now, I can see the rally car
appearing. To say that I am excited about seeing this car compete is an
understatement too. Targa Newfoundland will be a great event, and I look
forward to competing in it in years to come, as well as competing in SCCA
and other vintage events with the Cortina (and there's always Targa Tassie
too!). I doubt there is another Mk 2 Cortina rally car prepared to this
level in the US, so I feel that finishing it is an important goal.

I would like to thank all of you for your help and support.

I'd especially like to single out Pete and Rob at Cascade Autosport who did
an incredible job re-building (and I mean that literally) the sheet metal
and strengthening and painting the car. I would also like to thank my wife
Ann and my 2 girls for supporting me spending all these late nights in the
garage or at the shop.

A few people asked if I thought I would have it ready for Wild West in
September, given there is no shipping time involved in attending it.
At this stage I would say that is borderline too, because for a gravel event
I'd need to obtain a 4.1/4.44 diff and get it rebuilt with a LSD, and I'd
also probably need to obtain a close ratio gearset. I will probably try and
pick those up as the opportunity arises.

Anyway, I need to get back to work on the car...

Cheers,

Glenn
