I saw brief mention of the historic Monte somewhere the other day---just
enough to tell me that JB (that's John Buffum to you youngsters and non-US
rallyists!) and Ralph Beckman placed rather high. Beckman became "Beakman"
in the squib I read, but I think that was his Baccaruda they were herding
through the Alps.
Anybody know where one might better follow such events? Any of our crowd
have any details?
As for the "brisk TSD" style of rallying (vintage and otherwise) we enjoy on
the Pacific Northwest, we're headed for the Thunderbird Rally in BC next
weekend. That's the rally I so enjoy in a Saab Sonett---but this year I'll
be (alas) in my BMW iX again, as the Sonett bits STILL aren't back from the
paint shop! (Painters' time is like machinists' time, it seems.)
We DID manage to get the works-prepared Saab 96 fired up with the 1900-cc
dual-port engine installed. With open headers, Fred Ankeny drove it a mile
to the muffler shop, where it will get the rest of the exhaust cobbled into
place. I must say it was sweet exhilaration to follow along behind listening
to "the mouse that roared"! But Fred will not be taking that car to T'Bird,
either, as he has a conflict with some NASCAR deal he's been roped into.
(Southern sunshine versus sliding around on Canadian snow and ice? No hard
decision for me!)
Yes, it HAS been quiet out there. . . TOO quiet!
