Hi all,
Just finished running Targa Newfoundland... a week long event with 7
or 8 tarmac stages per day. I will be posting my daily reports ...
and hopefully some photos ... at www.VintageRally.com. Some are
already there.
We (Scott Giannou and I) had one incident that dropped us from Targa
contention. On Day 3 we were heading into a corner marked as about a
60 degree right hander. What the route book didn't say was that it
was downhill and the entry was very rough pavement. Consequently
Scott didn't slow enough and his Porsche 911 did what most Porsche's
do when you lift while in a corner... it spun out and sideways into a
guardrail, co-driver's side, of course. The rear fender flare wedged
under the armco and compressed the suspension and tire enough that we
could not drive it out, so we waited for the tow truck to show up,
figuring the suspension was damaged and we would need to be towed
into town for overnight repairs. Once released, however, the
suspension came back up to normal ride height. A quick look by our
crew determined that the damage was all cosmetic, so we rejoined the
rally at the lunch break about an hour later.
BTW, in order to be awarded the silver Targa plate, the team must
finish all stages in less than the posted times, much like the old
silver cup for the Alpine Rally. All times are generally achievable
by most any car and driver. Miss one, however, and the plate is out
of your grasp for another year.
