No, Stefan Holm jumped 2.37 last weekend. At age 32 he is the oldest ever who reached
2.37 or higher.

Looking back 2nd and 4th was pretty darn good in 2004, the team is even deeper
this year if you are looking at the pr's these guys have plus they are all young
too. Jonas is still the world leader I believe? but Jesse and Andra I think
both have enough experience to be in medal contention.

Also there have been some pretty good U.S. high jumpers to hang it up in their
prime. Nathan Leeper had won four straight us titles before hanging it up
prematurely (he came back briefly in 04 but for only a couple months) and you
have to wonder about Charles Clingler, that is the one guy I think could have
challenged for the world record down the road. I watched him have some narrow
misses at 2.41 at the prefontaine in 02 but he needed to get a real job for his
family etc. There just aren't a lot of opportunities for u.s. high jumpers to to
make a living out of it. Like many of the field events very few do it full
time. There are about what 4 guys that high jump full time in the us?

There also many opportunities in the US for big meets. How many top caliber
meets are there for u.s. high jumpers? Pre Classic the last two years but they
have had high jump three or four times in the past 13 years. There is Drake and
Penn but those are stellar college meets at best with a huge weather question
mark every year, nothing else in the Visa Championship series. Indoor usa's but
most say that is the lowest energy meet they compete in all year compared to
european indoor meets or even other collegiate meets there are more fans at etc.

The top guys are young though and have loads of talent plus Jamie and Tora are
always pretty consistent.

It would be easier to lament the U.S. high jumper performance internationally if there hadn't been a 2nd and 4th place finish in Athens.  Everyone stunk the place up in 2005 in Helsinki so that's no gauge and Osaka was a one-time chance for Donald Thomas.  I don't believe we'll be hearing from him again.

So, where does that leave us?  Andra Manson won an indoor Worlds bronze last March and Jesse Williams should have enough international experience by now that he can be a contender in China.  I expect an American on the podium and then all will appear right with the world of high jump once more.

Here's the long range problem as I see it.  Do you see very many of the European circuit meets with the men's high jump as one of the consistent events contested?  Why do you think that is?  Changing that is crucial if the event is going to have any chance of elevating anywhere close to its former prominence.  If the jumpers don't have major meets, in front of large crowds, to perform in, the event will continue to stagnate and it won't get covered except as a "winning jump only."

I can't sell an event where they are so far from the world record and there are no real personalities to speak of.  Fix either or both of those things and we'll see the men's high jump on television more often in the future.

well it was the olympic trials dennis, how could you not be pumped up.  Three week's prior to that i jumped at the tac me at mt.sac.  I got there late and didn't have a chance to warm up properly.  By the time i got to the infield the bar was at 7ft.  i politely asked could i have a jump and everyone turned around and looked at me,Ben field's say" little brother, the bar at 7ft"  So i run up with my sweats on and everything and just blasted it,that day, i knew i belonged!  By the way, talked to Coart owens yesterday. 7'2 at alameda 7'4" at arizona state,he told me to tell you hi!

Thank's Dennis.  The thing about what we did was the memories, you cant ever forget some of these times.  One of my favorite was the "80 olympic trial's in eugene! 62 jumpers, starting height 7'13/4" jumping behind jacobs and in front of stones,oh my God.  I'm twenty year's old, these dudes are my idol's,and here we are in eugene where the crowd know's who you are, what you've jumped in 8th grade even.  so i absolutely crashed the first jump, then boomed the next one. jumping in between two of the best ever, and reprasenting, doesn't get any better than that!

While at MCC I learned how to over do it with squats with Ron Semkiw and watched him throw the shot one day for a 70 1/4 record throw. I still had fun and loved the rush of clearing the bar at any height and enjoyed the all-comer meets around LA.

Thanks Kerry,
All the other jumpers had a bad day and I took advantage. How come you didn't show up at all comer's meets at Berkeley? You might recognize a couple of guys in the one photo, Maurice Crumby and John ??do't remember his last name who jumped for Cal a few years. I guess my biggest claim to any fame at all was being briefly ranked 17th all time in 1970 with a 6'10" jump at 16 years old, it didn't take much.  We had to be crazy back then landing on pieces of foam in a net. I don't know how many times I went through and hit the ground.
Thanks for noticing Kerry, I really need an ego boost right about now.

Yo Kerry,

Those two guys will always be in shape. I'm heading  back to SF for a bit then off to live in southern Brazil with an old flame.

Dwight's still got the best gig going in track and field and I'll surly be watching.

Hi Steve

What you sound like you have her doing is jumping UP. Too many girls are great gymnasts over the bar but don't jump up.

So I really wouldn't worry to much about that at this stage. Keep working on her vertical that is more important.

Try some back flips (standing flops) in training to see how well she can transfer the static position into a dynamic one over the bar.

Was she at Gateshead on Friday. Unfortunately I missed the U15 comp. Now that was nice weather - for ducks!!

Hi to all the group.

Any help would be greatful, i currently coach a 13 year old girl whom has a pr of 1.61m, shes been jumping about one year but unfortunately when laying out over the bar her legs and straight there is no knee flexing, also she goes over the bar with no bacvk arch what so ever (i call that piking),she has a six strided run up, given all the above im amazed she clears 1.61, its not a physical thing as when doing drills she lifts her take off knee quite well and can do stationery crabs arch her back perfectly.

Hi JR

The use of a box itself should have no bearing on the for plant being in
line or otherwise. Anticipating layout which can be one of the causes of
moving the foot round will have a detrimental effect whether there is a box
there or not. That is just bad jumping.

I agree that accuracy off a full run can be an issue. 95% of my box use is
off a short approach work using it to focus on activity in the last couple
of strides. I also recommend a box at least 1 metre square (bigger target)
to minimise any psychological concerns. With synthetic on they should be
heavy enough not to move. If they do it gives great feedback as it says
something about the quality of the plant :-). I put ground down nails in the
bottom of mine to act as spike to help minimise any movement

Try scissor work first of 2-3 strides to get the advantage of working a box.
Once they can stand up and not collapse then move on to flopping/add a curve
etc

Denis,
This is based mostly on observation I have made while visiting other
schools and watching their practices. Many of the jumpers would slow
as the approached the box, come out of their curve and then rotate
their foot so as to be sure they landed in the pit. Many young
jumpers already have problems in this area and I'm afraid this might
reinforce it.
I guess my main concern with a box is it messes with the natural flow
a jumper should have going from their approach to their jump. But I
have never really used them that much so if most here seem to like
them I am certainly willing to give them a try! If any here really
think using them is important please explain a few of your drills to
me.

Advantages
Can create mechanically superior conditions for the jumper.
Help develop focus on  aspects of the jump
There is reduced stress in the takeoff
They are psychologically useful - getting used to seeing a bar above head height
(I would never go above 20cms (8") for a senior and probably less for a junior
Stepping down off a box (setupfoot) encourages a faster foot plant - not easy to use.

Disadvantages
Used too much at the wrong time they will screw up takeoff timing
Miss them and you have no ankle

Ramps have an advantage as they more naturally accommodate the  foot plant

If level, short and dry grass can be as reactive as synthetic. Problems are more likely to come from poor running style and sloppy footplants
As far as training is concerned mixing grass with gym floors and synthetic is a good idea to help minimise stress injuries.

boxes can be good for a lot of reasons it helps give jumpers over the bar work,
plus they have more time in the air to experiment with things, such as driving
their head back to create a better arch etc. It also gets them trained to
jumping at higher heights so they don't look so intimidating (even though it is
with assistance) you can take a lot of jumps because it is a lot lower impact.
just make sure the box is secured with a 45lb weight or something so it doesn't
slide at takeoff.

grass jumping i wouldn't fully endorse. I imagine you can't go at quite the
same heights, and although it is easier on the muscles it could be less stable
on the joints i.e. knee ankle etc. it's not as secure of a plant. It depends
what age level though, if that is the only option it probably wouldn't hurt.

Here's a couple of answers I bet no one is thinking of.....

I coach elementery 5th grade through 8th grade, I use the box to answer the simple question of 'will it hurt if I jump really high?' in addtion to working with the athletes form. I see using the box as a major advantage especially with younger athletes who can barely jump on to the landing pit mat.

As for jumping on grass, never thought much of it. In my days of jumping at a small school, we would jump from grass or dirt (in the days of cinder tracks) -- never saw any injuries.  I would watch out for morning dew, the grass would be very sippery!

First off, great job announcing the trials Dwight. I only wish they
would have shown more high jump!
With some time before the Olympics start I thought I'd stir up a
little activity on this board with a couple questions I have been
thinking about for a while.

1) Jump boxes and ramps
I know a few coaches who swear by them and other who never use them.
Does anyone here use them? If so, when and why? If not, why not.
I do not as I feel that it messes with their rhythm over the bar and
can lead to bad habits such as rotating the jump foot to parallel or
even away from the pit.

2) Jumping on grass
This is one I only just started thinking about. The pole vault coach
at our school bought our old pit and set it up at his house (he has a
lot of land). Our AD went ahead and gave him an old high jump pit as
well. He is probably going to put in a run up for the pole vault but
as of now everything is just on the grass. This summer I have met a
few of my high jumpers out there to get some jumps in. They all seem
to like jumping on the grass. They wear their spikes and have had no
real trouble with slippage. This got me to wondering if maybe
training for HJ on the grass may not be a bad idea. It seems like
many jumpers complain about shin pain in their jumping leg by the end
of the season. I am wondering if you spent time jumping off of the
grass if it might help to put less stress on the leg.

Hey all trying to gauge if there is any interest in any elite level jumpers competing at a meet in Eugene at the trials facility the weekend of June 15th. This is also the last day to up your mark for qualifying for the trials. They are considering having a high jump at this meet, but are waiting to gauge the interest level. If you are interested. Please email me as soon as possible and I will get the you meet director's email. There is not prize money, it is simply an opportunity to get in a competition at the trials venue before July.

thanks

Hi Guys

A school I recently visited were talking about the dartfish system.  It has a time delay so that athletes and coaches can view the attempt after they have jumped.  It can be projected onto a sceen in the sportshall. I am not aware of its analysis tools.

Quintic is a really good biomechanics tool and can be purchased on licence.  The top end price is quite expensive £2,500 +vat(in the UK).  Lower end versions are available free of charge but do not have any of the functionality.

Hi Steve

Dartfish - great piece of kit if you can afford it.

Cheaper functional alternatives to look at are Silicon Coach and Quintic

UCS pits are very good but pricey here in the UK. The 1300 one would also do
a pretty good job.

Thanks for the input Denis. Here is what we are sort of leaning

Another equipment comment, we recently went in on a DartFish video
system along with a couple of other teams. Really a nice tool for
watching and analyzing sports performances.
