Must be Spring!!   Message List

Nice to see the forum waking up again. Must be spring time.

Two quick questions... I have a new recruit. 6'7", skinny as a bean
pole, high school senior that didn't get much love from the
basketball team but can jump out of the gym. Wants to make something
of his senior year -- so he is coming out for track to high jump.

If you had a blank slate -- what would be your teaching progression
given you have a finite 13 week season. He obviously has the build,
leg strength, and conditioning.

Second, most of our kids are multi-event and spread pretty thin
across practice times and coaches. Our head coach is setting up a
program on "Everydays" where a kid will sometime on his own, take 5
to 10 minutes, to do event specific drills everyday for every event.

My thought for the high jumpers would be:
1) Oval runs either on the infield or run past the pit, work lean.
2) Double arm skipping to replicate take offs.
3) Tempo accelerations to work on smooth approach.
4) Backward flops off box for in the air body mechanics.

Thoughts??

... OK ... Only if he uses a 2 arm shift - use low hurdles ... OK ... OK but also off floor is good plus Technical work off 4-6 strides - easier to develop...
