Blocking is the last step on the front of the ring for us
shotputters, with which all the horizontal energy is transfered to
vertical.
How strong the block is dictates to a very large extent the amount of
power that the thrower still has from the back of the ring (that there
is a power continuum without interruptions ) and the amount of power
he can transfer to the implement.
For example, the major difference between a standing throw and a full
throw is the power of the block, momentum feeds it.
Therein probably lies one of the major advantages of the spin
technique over the glide-it allows for a stronger block.
I hopw my answer is satisfactory enough.
